I'll never forget when I was a dj and I played this one night for a guy who had recently arrived in San Francisco from Boise, Idaho. How happy it made him.
Mr. Tizer, it's been 9 years since you posted this comment. If you are out there, I must share this: I am a person who sees a color-shape for each musical note. I survived a very cruel upbringing in rural New Mexico. A farming area in the mountain of Bent. Bent, New Mexico. As wound up becoming a pianist but as I tried to understand my color associations with music, I found myself using many Erasure examples in my writing and videos. (See me here at The Acoustic Rabbit Hole). Vince Clarke's songwriting is very sophisticated and there is much theoretical examples harmony to be found in these songs. The funny thing in finding your comment, though, is that I was JUST scrolling through their discography as I had decided to make a video of the Top 10 Erasure Songs according to a music theorist. Going album by album, I was contemplating "Oh L'amoiur" from album #1 because of it's simplicity and ability to create a feeling of warmth and love. Yet, it still felt so simply. It was the 2nd album, The Circus, where "Hidewawy" immediately stood out. It was a great solace for me in my own coming out of the closet in the 90's. And it's has some fascinating theoretical footwork. The choice of key if B (magenta for me). And B (magenta) is the last note from Middle C (red). Therefore the key of be is far-removed. It is almost literally the end of the rainbow. Or the end of the line. In human voice, the B-note to the C-note is one of the main transitions in the vocal registers (bass, tenor, alto, soprano. Of, course this the the transition of the boy being rejected by his family and feeling his home. There are some other technical theory stuff in the song as well (shifts of a minor chord into major in the same bar, for example. When he sings "Don't Be Afraid," at the chorus). Thanks for 'reckoing one of Erasure's greatest--nine years ago! - _The Acoustic Rabbit Hole,_ Bent, New Mexico, 2024
i was backstage on one of their first kigs love erasure love depeche love yazoo and what links them all is a god sir vince ahead of time the tiesto of the eighties
Isn't it amazing how things have changed, in some parts of the world, since this song debuted and had more relevance? Today, the only valid reasons a person wouldn't be "out" would be either that they are too young and have no available support system should they be rejected by the people who should care for them or they are in a community where it is still illegal to love whom you love unless it meets with some religious zealots' approval. This is still the case in many parts of the world. They still kill people for who they sleep with. Please, everyone, remember that until everyone is free, no one truly is.
I was the same as most people here frightened scared to admit who i really was followed Andy and vince from wonderland i bought the circus album couldn't wait to get home and listen to it after listening to it doesn't have to be to first few notes of this very powerful track started when Andy sang the opening line i absolutely broke down in tears the lyrics hit me like a steam train its as if he wrote this about me that's how good Andy is he writes from the heart hes been there he knows what its like i sat and bawled my eyes out this song utterly truly saved me and i mean that
This song is beautiful, especially the lyrical aspect. I can deal with the playskool keyboard. This remix is a ton of fun too though, I love the percussion. Especially at 3:20
Are you seriously trying to take th piss playskool keyboard and you can't even spell either this song has helped a hell of a lot of people to be who there want how fucking dare you slag Andy and vince
Do you realize that, even if this message had a discernible context, you come across as an illiterate fool? What in the hell are you talking about? Sifting through your gibberish, you seem to be reacting to someone saying that you or someone else is gay by virtue of liking Erasure. Well, sure. This particular song, however, is very much a gay-oriented theme about people having the courage to be who they are regardless of others' opinions of them. You seem to be desperate to make sure people know you are not gay. This would seem to miss the point. Please go back to grammar school.
I remember when this video ran on MTV and other video shows that it had an unusual visual style to it that could be called "obscure" at times, but the quality of this copy of the video is horrendous. If anyone has a more clear version of it, perhaps send a link to DJROb and he can swap them out.

Erasure has helped me survive for years. If I was on an island, with one band. It would be them. 💖

Well Boise will be Boise.

Big hugs to Andy for exploding me out of the closet with fireworks and glitter in the 80s!
Essa é de arrepiar e encher os olhos d'água
My Favorit remix❤❤❤❤❤❤
Now more important than ever before.. it does get better, because we get better at dealing with it.
This song was my theme when coming out and accepting being gay in a sometimes hostile 80s, still holds so many memories.
Proud to be gay.
Difficult times sometimes lead the happiest of existences! Xx
same!
it can still break my heart.
Glad you are happy. Eff them, be who you are! ❤

As a wargamer I totally empathize with this song.
some people are so dum. you can think of your girl too. just because you like erasure ,doesn't mean your gay. im as straight as it gets.
Who cares about sexuality? This is great music and great artists.
That's unfortunate but I'll accept you the way you were born ❤️

I am a straight ally and this makes me want to cry, how could anyone not accept their own child just for being true to themselves. 💔💔😭😭
God this makes me so sad, how could you reject your own child just for being who they are? 💔😭
but i love this track :D
