- In this video I explain the decisions that went into the selection of the eight bags that are attached to the bike, the bags within those bags, the air pump, the water bottles and a couple of other odds & ends.
The next videos will cover my camping & cooking equipment.

“Believe”
Absolutely amazing to see all of the pieces and how they fit perfectly.
I BELIEVE you’ll make it 4,000 miles and live it!
Good luck! Looking forward to watching videos of your adventure. I get it. Believe so go for it and inspire us 😊
Awesome setup! Thanks for sharing.
Really like the frame bag definitely going to get one
There was a slight mistake when making my frame bag, but Rogue Panda's customer support was great and I had a replacement in no time. ;-)
“Have I mentioned the feed bags…”. Lol. Gorgeous set up brutha. One piece of kit I would recommend is the Garmin Varia tail light/radar. It has saved my butt a few times. If you are taking a vote, the “believe” is a turn off. Ride safe man. Looking forward to following your journey.
Yeah. I expect Ted Lasso fans would love it, but all others misinterpret. Darn!
I like the Believe sign. Nice that someone made it for you. I'd certainly hang it on you bike. Surly's are awesome. I have a 2017 Ogre and a 2023 Bridge Club 👍👍
what a great looking bike and set up all around. It is impressive at the number of individual decisions you had to make in order to just be ready to start a ride like this. Definitely will be in my go-to channels if/when I decide to hit the road for longer trips.
Thanks very much. I'll start posting again very soon as I prep for next month's ride on the Rock Island and Katy Trails.
@@marktgreene I live in Illinois near the MCT trails and not too far from the St. Charles, MO end of the Katy Trail. When you planning on riding there?
Bikepacking Across America, NICE MY FRIEND
Loving your videos, Sir. So you've got at degree in electronic engineering, if I remember correctly, but have you also been giving a lot of lectures or presentations of any kind? Or making videos etc on other media than UA-cam? 'Cause you're a flippin' natural at this. Seems like you've been doing this your whole life. This is as close to professional grade presenting as it gets and it's a joy to watch. You've got an engaging demener, and, to me, you sound a bit like Alan Bean, one of the asutronauts on Apollo 12. And that's a good thing 'cause I could listen to him forever 🙂 So now that I'm done with the sunshine blowing, I'm looking forward to watching the series 😅Just gotta make my way through whatever videos comes before that 🙂
Cheers
A.K, Norway
Hi Mark, I just chanced upon your video, one of the most instructive and clear I've ever seen.
Needless to say, I subscribed right away.
Keep it up!
Ferruccio from Venice, Italy
Thanks!
Good job I home your trip went well. Don't ditch your warm clothes in the summer heat. The greatest number of deaths from Hypothermia occur in the Spring and Summer. There is nothing like a hot summer day turning into a bone chilling cold rain. For road safety on narrow shoulder less roads I use a flashing light shining on my reflective vest.
Nice rig and setup 👍
Thanks.
Awesome build there. I've been long distance biking (long for me, 50-60 miles) on my built up Marin San Rafael DS2, but have yet to go bike packing. Few of the bags I added early on (few years back) as I was upgrading the bike (cog, crankset, bottom bracket, shifters, shifter cables, brake levers, brake calipers, rotors n brake pads, pedals, seat, dropper post, fork, riser bar, 2 bottle holders, rims, tires, and tubes - it's basically a new bike all throughout except the frame) were a top tube bag and 2 seat post bags front and rear (front one is for small med kit). And I'm currently looking to add a full frame bag, rear rack, and panniers. I live in the great southeast and have been scoping out bike packing trails here. I have my XC bike that's also built up, but that's solely for XC and trail riding. Still love my Marin lots tho. Anyhow, thanks for the tips n info! 🤘
Yep. Believe! Ted Lasso. One of the few good things that came out of(and helped me get to thru) the Pandemic... I like the appropriation for your trip!
Thanks!!
If I had a Surly, I would nickname it Shirley
Alliterate!
Believe in many ways 2 achieved in life challenging ourselves to the limit for I am just going through open ♥ surgery is a challenging 4 me to believe that u can cycling long distances thk 4 the knowledge vedio
I believe things like this are very possible if you just do it in manageable pieces. Good luck with your surgery!
being a scout , a nickname could be bald eagle and the drone could be eagle eye
Good thinking! I especially like "Eagle Eye!"
@@marktgreene I know by now your trip is over. But maybe your next trip
Hi Mark. Great video. Preparing my Surly DT for take off in Feb 2025. Going to do many trails (GAP/C&O, Erie, ITET, etc.) Did you need to call Rogue Panda to order the extra zipper and top rope or?? Did you consider using the screws instead?
@@wanderingwidoweronwheels I considered using screws on the upper bar, but preferred cords up there. I actually ordered all of that when I ordered the custom frame bag.
I like the BELIEVE sign. Whether you're a religious person or not.
Just believing you can do this trio is great.
Good luck.
I'm waiting to see if you'll be in full lycra or something baggier.
Do you bring a lock? For the truckstops and what not.
No lycra on this trip. Aerodynamics is not my concern. That said, by the time I'm in the midwest I may change my mind, but I expect that I'll be trying to wear the coolest clothing possible in July!
I have a small lightweight lock that I'm use when running into grocery stores, etc. ; not a heavy duty beast,
Hey Mark. Again, totally buttoned up. Maybe you’ll do a video on nutrition, but just a thought. Are you using any type of hydration mix? I’ve been using Skratch Labs for years. I got several players on my daughters college soccer team to give it a try and they never went back. Anyway, I;m a big fan of Skratch products. Again, your totally buttoned up and probably have this taken care of. Enjoy the ride.
I've been using "Go Far" for my local rides but I'm switching to Nuun for electrolytes for this trip because of the weight, and I'll juet be eating as well as possible for nutrition. Once I'm rolling, I like your idea of a video about nutrition.
love the excitement :) good luck on the trip
how are you planning to use the front rack?
Good question. And one I have not answered. I need to get more weight upfront for stability, but I'm not sure what to put up there. Of course I'll have water bottles attached down low, but I'm thinking about maybe my clothes upfront. Not sure.
@@marktgreene i think if you only have enough stuff for 2 panniers you can try them up front and ditch the rear rack.
Love it
I would name your bike "Sleipnir" after Odin's mythical eight-legged horse.
Great ifdea for the name! Now you've got me thinking about famous horses' names. I think "Traveler" is my favorite (Robert E. Lee's steed), but I won't use that because of the association with the Confederacy. Sleipnir is definitely a candidate!
When are you leaving? And where from? Good video!
I started pedaling in Florence, Oregon on June 4.
The B17 saddle isn’t broken in: How’d that work out?😂😂😂😂😂
Really really well. It might've been in part because of my suspension seat post, but it was comfortable the whole time. I wore padded shorts for the first few weeks, but I was never sore and I'm now a huge fan of Brook saddles.
Believe from X-Files
Good guess that did not occur to me. This (font, color, etc.) is from Ted Lasso.
Tip get first aid out for fast access
Always easy to get, and make sure everyone knows where it is.
@@marktgreene LOL yeah
GDMBR for 2024?
Too rough and hilly for me!
Let the religious nut-jobs think they know what the sign is for, it will ruin their day when they find out it means you “believe” that you can do this epic trip. I’m considering the Bridge Club for my trip. I’m also considering a couple of other bikes, I’m not as convinced that aluminum is not strong enough. Most of the attachment points are actually on places that it won’t really matter if the bike is steel or aluminum. I do like the idea of being able to get a steel bike repaired anywhere. The weight of steel bike compared to aluminum is insignificant compared with what it will weigh packed with all the stuff you’ll be bringing.
Agreed. If I had it all to do over again, I would probably do steel, but I would seriously look at titanium.
@@marktgreene Ti is out of my budget, even just a frame would destroy my budget.
Ted Lasso
Yup!
@@marktgreene Looks like you are all set for an amazing trip, good luck to you
So…. You have front and back racks, yet you decided on a frame bag? To each his own, I guess…
Yep. And I used them all.
That's my bike the cops stole when I got arrested for riding within my rights
