I'm not a nurse, but I work in a hospital. On one hand, I believe that while a hospital is NOT a hotel, patients should be treated with utmost care because the bill is far more expensive than a fine 5-star hotel (without the luxury toiletries). On the other hand, I believe patients who treat hospital staff with disrespect should be dismissed. The disrespect from patients I've seen in my own hospital makes me want to pay for a year's worth of therapy for the nurses.

Ever heard the phrase: Glorified Maid? Yeah. I heard that 25 years ago. As I look back on my so called LPN nursing career I averaged burnout about every 5 years or so…took a break, then went back to nursing. Most nurses actually enjoy that endorphin rush of making another persons health etc better…even with an unnecessarily difficult patient here and there…it’s ALWAYS the administration and/or the pay that nurses complain about. I did much agency nursing to give me some pseudo power over my pay and schedule, but the burnout STILL comes typically within 3 to 5 years for nurses regardless of working at a facility FT or thru an agency. I don’t know what nursing instructors are teaching their students these days, but we were prepared for the concierge of it all in my nursing program 30 years ago…we STILL burn out, so don’t beat yourself up.
Congratulations on recognizing that YOUR safety, sanity and financial stability matter. Good luck in your psych career. Psych is fun. No filter and you won’t be bored. By the end of your career you’ll realize what I know: we’re ALL on a psych spectrum. Be well!

I was an RN for four decades and I retired while I was still in good health. 12 hour shifts and Press Gainey surveys were recipes for burnout. I was a psych nurse for many of those years. Read all that you can and try to find an experienced mentor. Also, pray you don't get a really horrible nurse manager. That is why I left nursing permanently. It takes years of practice to become a knowledgeable psychiatric nurse but I did find it rewarding.

Your video is only a shadow of why most nurses leave. I’m retiring from healthcare for similar reasons, but it’s deeper than that. I’ve been an RN since 2007 and have worked in many fields and modalities. The 2 biggest issues bringing down the industry for me are patient driven care (entitlement mentality) and service excellence to ramp up patient satisfaction. Then there are the politics (from hiring to management to firing to PTO banks), unfair wage increases (in 2010 I made $28/hr; in 2018 I made $25.71/hr). Being “essential” showed how we are viewed. The word “slave” came to mind and wouldn’t leave. And now with the vaccine rollout and corporate bullying tactics, all healthcare workers (slaves) will be forced to receive the vaccine against their wishes if they want to keep their jobs. Those that refuse, even on valid principles, are and will be villainized, which can inhibit their ability to find meaningful work in the future. I could continue, but I gotta get dressed and go to work now lol! Great video. Just make sure you have a solid plan in place before you walk away. God bless

Nurses are spit on, beaten, punched, kicked, sworn at, physically and verbally assaulted every damn day. And not JUST by the patients, but by the families of the patients as well! They're overworked, often not even allowed their legal lunch breaks, often not having time to even go to the bathroom. If they attempt to pull back even a tiny bit in order to take care of themselves, the hospital ITSELF, or more the CEO's and owners of the hospitals, and sometimes the head nurses, penalize and abuse them for it further. And the pay is often atrocious with some nurses actually having to consider second jobs JUST TO PAY THEIR BILLS! And it's not just in hospitals. It's even WORSE in long-term nursing care facilities. Those places chew nursing staff up and spit them out. The turnover rate for those places in IMMENSE and has caused more burnout and more nurses leaving the field.
People are screaming that "This wasn't a problem before the mandates, the mandates are doing this to them!"
    WRONG!!!!
This has been a massive problem LONG before Covid started. This pandemic has simply accelerated and exacerbated the problem, and dragged it out of the shadows of "it's only a few disgruntled individuals" to shine a glaring spotlight on just how BAD it is for nursing staff. Between the low pay, the physical and psychological abuse, and yes even multiple instances of sexual assault from patients as well, unfortunately this is also NOT uncommon, especially in long-term health care facilities, it's no wonder nurses are burning out, fast. Couple that with the massive rise in death, and the fact the ICU's are now overwhelmed? Things have gotten to a breaking point, and these poor men and women are saying "No More".
This problem has been festering for several decades, and it's now erupted into a massive spot that no one can ignore, not anymore.

I've lived in 4 states in the past 15 years. Worked in ICU, psych, med/surge and in the community as well. If you are tired of caring for sick folk then you NEED to reconsider your path. No money will fix your discontent with your career. (I've been paid over 30$/hr at all my positions... often closer to 40. I'm surprised you say 30 is normal with 4 yrs experience)
I hope you're ready for the stress and disrespect that only psych can throw your way. Psych patients can often sense your weakest place and will use that to try to get their needs met. If you are leaving bedside nursing to avoid being disrespected or to avoid serving people... psych IS NOT what you're looking for.
Please do yourself the favor and go work acute inpatient psych and make sure it is what you think it is. Caring for a bipolar patient with pneumonia on the medical floor is not the same as caring for someone dealing with acute nonmedicated mania or schizophrenia.
I wish you luck in your journey.

If you're having an angry/frustrated reaction to caring for physically ill folk then you cannot say this won't be the same with psych. If you're irritated with an elderly lady asking repeated questions when they are too sick to get out of bed by THEMSELVES, I guarantee 💯 that you'll be irritated when a physically healthy patient calls you a swear word (repeatedly) and asks you for food.
Again, I wish you sincere luck in your journey. I hope this is what you are looking for. Please be the type of nurse that works to see their patients healthy and happy rather than the one lookin for an "easy" position away from the hospital.

I can relate to that, Nancy. I once told my nurse manager almost 17 years ago on my day of appraisal that i've been working triple hard in her team run by some 'sitting-around-doing-nothing-not-pulling-their-weight' nurses & auxiliaries alike to make it appear like it's a teamwork and yet she's just not getting it simply because she's playing deaf ears all along. I was not even being rewarded for all the hard work that I've done in the ward not to mention the kick in the teeth of being poorly paid for doing this nursing job over the years. I, too, was refused vacations, time off, sick leave and all else due to the obvious politics in the ward. I recalled the time when my dad was on his own at home severely ill til the day he passed away. I was still working and looking after patients in the hospital other than spending quality time with my dad who's my own flesh & blood, because i was refused to have some time off and the next thing i knew was- i was standing in great sorrow while viewing my lifeless dad through the glass window in his coffin at his funeral with so much tears welling up in my eyes too late to say my last goodbye to him which is utterly deplorable! Don't get me wrong, Nancy, contrary to what you've said- 'i just so hate this job!' I am still hoping that, one day, karma will work its way in my favor for every single teardrop that I've wasted at the time of my dad's passing.

You must know nothing about the healthcare system. Most hospitals are so saturated with nurses and if EVERYONE wants to get into a specialty so obviously that can't happen - it's simple math. The hospital I started at was like this - I was with a preceptor in med-surg who said she had been trying to get a position in ICU for 7 years!!!!! Yes 7 years. She said even in other hospitals in the area it is the same. I know it to be the same throughout my entire state (Ohio) as I have friends in the two largest metro areas in Ohio. The general consensus is until RNs retire or die, you're not getting into a specialty.
