- A Poem " Night Mail " by W.H Auden, a wonderful idea about old era old memories and well kept at that time.
In the documentary "Night Mail" (1936), John Grierson narrates the opening scene with WH Auden's poem of the same name, "Night Mail." Auden wrote the poem specifically for the film.
W.H. Auden prose a marvelous work A Rap style poem in old era.

Ahh, nostalgia, this and 1953’’s ‘London to Brighton in 4 minutes’ were a welcome distraction in my early childhood pre-video recorder, black and white, television days

New icse syllabus poem 👑
This is the night mail crossing the Border,
Bringing the cheque and the postal order,
Letters for the rich, letters for the poor,
The shop at the corner, the girl next door.
Pulling up Beattock, a steady climb:
The gradient's against her, but she's on time.
Past cotton-grass and moorland boulder
Shovelling white steam over her shoulder,
Snorting noisily as she passes
Silent miles of wind-bent grasses.
Birds turn their heads as she approaches,
Stare from bushes at her blank-faced coaches.
Sheep-dogs cannot turn her course;
They slumber on with paws across.
In the farm she passes no one wakes,
But a jug in a bedroom gently shakes.
Dawn freshens, Her climb is done.
Down towards Glasgow she descends,
Towards the steam tugs yelping down a glade of cranes
Towards the fields of apparatus, the furnaces
Set on the dark plain like gigantic chessmen.
All Scotland waits for her:
In dark glens, beside pale-green lochs
Men long for news.
Letters of thanks, letters from banks,
Letters of joy from girl and boy,
Receipted bills and invitations
To inspect new stock or to visit relations,
And applications for situations,
And timid lovers' declarations,
And gossip, gossip from all the nations,
News circumstantial, news financial,
Letters with holiday snaps to enlarge in,
Letters with faces scrawled on the margin,
Letters from uncles, cousins, and aunts,
Letters to Scotland from the South of France,
Letters of condolence to Highlands and Lowlands
Written on paper of every hue,
The pink, the violet, the white and the blue,
The chatty, the catty, the boring, the adoring,
The cold and official and the heart's outpouring,
Clever, stupid, short and long,
The typed and the printed and the spelt all wrong.
Thousands are still asleep,
Dreaming of terrifying monsters
Or of friendly tea beside the band in Cranston's or Crawford's:
Asleep in working Glasgow, asleep in well-set Edinburgh,
Asleep in granite Aberdeen,
They continue their dreams,
But shall wake soon and hope for letters,
And none will hear the postman's knock
Without a quickening of the heart,
For who can bear to feel himself forgotten?
Welldone
I always remember a parody of this when I was at school....
This is the blue bike crossing the tarmac,
Bringing the bread and the baked beans.
Beans for the rich, beans for the poor,
Shop at the corner, the girl next door...
etc., etc..
Men long for beans.

I ❤ this piem every yaar i teach to new batch of girls. Huge respect for Auden for penning this beautiful poem.
college??? we are learning this in 7th
First time hearing this. So this is where hip hop and rap is taken from. You can hear the progression from this to the New York ghettos definitely
Don't be stupid..
Hiphop isn’t just rapping. It’s a lot of things that make up the hiphop culture. B boys, DJ, graffiti, rap…. And this here is a poem. Any poem can be said to a beat. Doesn’t mean it’s rapping
He was rapping
By air, By sea, By land, By hand .
Best poem.
Those were the days love.
would U plz explain more abt ur experience if u like u can can
Im literally vibing
The rhythm. ❤
We used this poem in school and had to say it and it was so fun 😊😊
Superb ❤❤❤❤
wait wait wait, they said hip hop music started in the Bronx in the 1970s...I'm starting to think otherwise.
Hiphop is more than rap. It’s the lifestyle. Rap is a PART of hiphop. Like breakdancing, graffiti, DJIng, the fashion…. Not just rapping
Amazing
Thnx
Epic
Men long for news.
Genius. ❤
Perfect. ❤
Even Auden needed his commercial connections to keep up his work. No shame however. ❤
Pity that some lines are missing from this sequence.

True
Yes. How the world has changed in my lifetime. Now we have e-mail, while the latest technology then was the automated pickup of mailbags scooped up off tall bollards as the train sped by- there’s one at 0.42 and one towards the very end. It’s all rather moving.
Bro the rap 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
