What’s the Right Way to Clean, Condition & Protect Your Leather? Meguiar’s - Quik Tips

- Leather is one of those features that gives a car a luxurious, sophisticated look and feel while contributing to the overall driving experience. Just like other surfaces it needs to be cleaned and maintained on a regular basis. But, with so many different products and processes available, it can make things really confusing. So, how do you care for the leather in your car?
With leather products it’s always a good idea to be extra cautious and test for color fastness and compatibility on a small, inconspicuous area. Begin by gently vacuuming. If you are using a plastic nozzle, make sure it’s not rough so you don’t scratch the leather. A soft bristled brush can be a great tool to help you collect dust and debris as you vacuum. Next, evaluate how much cleaning is needed, the type of appearance you want and the type of application you prefer.
MAINTAIN, LIGHTLY CLEAN & PROTECT
For leather in really good condition that needs light cleaning, Meguiar’s Ultimate Leather Detailer is the perfect choice. Spray onto a towel or applicator, work into a section and wipe off gently. This will lightly clean, keep the original appearance and add polymer protection making it easier to maintain in the future.
Another option for light cleaning with a little more gloss would be one of the Gold Class Leather 3-In-1 products. The spray and wipes clean, condition and leave a rich, luxurious appearance. For a more traditional approach, Gold Class Rich Leather 3-In-1 Lotion or Gel provide excellent cleaning, moisturizing and protection leaving a natural look and feel. Just apply in sections with a foam applicator or terry cloth towel and wipe off excess with a separate, clean towel.
For textured, perforation and stitching apply product EXTREMELY thin and evenly so you don’t get residue stuck in the texture or pinholes. Or, select a spray or wipe that’s not as thick.
MODERATE CLEANING
For deeper cleaning, go with Meguiar’s Gold Class Leather and Vinyl Cleaner. It thoroughly cleans but is gentle enough to use regularly. Vacuum loose dirt and spray directly onto a small section of leather, or onto a microfiber towel or applicator. Work in with light to moderate pressure and wipe excess off with a separate towel. If more cleaning is needed, spray onto the leather in a small section and agitate with a soft bristle brush. Work in and wipe off with a microfiber before it dries. Repeat if needed working in sections.
CONDITION & PROTECT - After Moderate Cleaning
After deeper cleaning, condition and protect with a product like Meguiar’s Gold Class Leather Conditioner. This will gently condition with aloe and moisturizing oils, add UV protection, and help to maintain an original look and feel. Spray on leather or on a clean towel or applicator, work in evenly, and wipe off excess with a separate towel.

I have to say that I have owned my own car since I turned sixteen back in the 80s. Just like every young guy did back then and today we always cleaned our cars. I tried all the different products on the market. Meguiars hands down had the better product. To this day that is the only stuff I use. If you own a boat or a motorcycle they make products for those things also. I don't work for meguiars I am just a big fan of their.

I use this for my leather bag.
I always keep a can or 2 of Gold Class leather wipes in the glovebox of my 2020 Honda Passport Elite AWD. Virtually under 20 minutes, I can clean and condition both front and rear leather seats. Really a time saver because its my daily driver for work and I want to take care of my leather anywhere, anytime. Great product for detailing on the go!

Once every month or so would make sense for most vehicles unless the car is in a particularly harsh climate. Regular maintenance with the conditioner is key and will mean you may not need a dedicated cleaner very often.
Can the meguiars ultimate leather balm safe to be apply to leather wrapped steering wheel? Afraid the oily effect will affect manouvering the wheels.
That is certainly safe, but make sure to apply sparingly as you don't want excess product residue to get stuck in areas like the stitching. The product leaves a very natural appearance and feel. it is not greasy or shiny.
Can the spray bottle of gold class rich leather cleaner conditioner be safely used on leather jackets?..
Likely yes, but we cannot vouch for every type of leather or dye process in the world so we always recommend you test for color fastness on a discrete area first.
After applying the ultimate leather detailer as mentioned should I buff it lightly with a separate dry microfiber cloth?
It is always good to apply interior products by spraying them onto a towel first and then wiping on the surface. Although not entirely necessary in some cases it would also make sense to finish by wiping off any excess product with a clean part of the towel or another clean/dry towel.
Hey there quick question, if my leather seats to begin with are pretty clean would you recommend I use the leather & vinyl cleaner first and then for maintenance the rich leather wipes? Or would I be just fine with simply using the wipes? When so often would a conditioner be recommended?

Using the cleaner/conditioner is typically enough for regular cleaning of seats in decent condition.

There should be no reason you need to do that.

Yes, if you like the appearance it is leaving that is totally fine. Make sure to spray it on the towel/applicator first and then wipe it onto the surface. Then come back with a clean/dry part of the towel and wipe off any excess.

Not sure which product specifically you are referring to but it should only be a matter of minutes as long as you don't over apply and wipe off any excess.
What should I use for synthetic leather?
All of our leather products will work on synthetic leather. The best one for you will be determined by your preferences as they relate to application method and shine. If you want a nice natural appearance we would recommend our Ultimate Leather Detailer.
The best way to clean leather is a steam cleaner and fresh towels. All your doing is smearing layers of cleaner and grime deep into the leather. Meguires is the best though.

None of them have a "new car scent" specifically but all of them do have very pleasant scents ranging from new leather, to sweet herbal, to pina colada.

Our Gold Class Rich Leather Cleaner Conditioner in the spray form gives a fairly decent shine. If you want something that offers a more natural appearance we would recommend our Ultimate Leather Detailer.

if it leaves streaks, how to remove?
Most of our leather product are very mild and water based so typically even a warm damp towel will help remedy streaking or an uneven appearance. Another key to help minimize the potential of streaking would be spray the product onto the towel first and then wipe it on rather than spraying directly on the surface.

Used it not sure if it's worth the money, I've used other products out there that are more cheaper found it to be 6 out of 10, was expecting a more richer result.

Are you referring to our Ultimate Leather Detailer? It is very much safe on your leather but not recommended for a body shop environment.

Although likely safe on plastic, we really would recommend you use one of our vinyl/rubber/plastic dressings instead.

Try chemical guys leather spray with proper brush! Ate dirt that Mequires couldn't touch!!! On my driver's seat!!
If once a month I clean my leather seats with a leather cleaner, will it strip off the conditioner I put on the month before?
If you are using a dedicated leather cleaner that is solely a cleaner you would want to follow it with a conditioner each time. If you are using a leather cleaner/conditioner product you would not need to worry about that.
