You know about #Oppenheimer, but have you heard of Joseph Rotblat - the only scientist to leave the Manhattan Project in Los Alamos to build the atomic bomb?
10:21 the main problems here as in the rest of Africa, is obesity and lack of discipline
Actually, it’s not that unusual for white people who grew up in rural South Africa to speak the vernacular. White children who grow up on farms in that area all speak Zulu. What is unique, in this case, is that Mayor Pappas has used his knowledge as a tool of cooperation rather than control. Our country is hugely polarised, so it’s heartening to see this. We need many more leaders like him, who see politics as a vocation to a life of service, rather than a career with prospective financial gain
my grandmother, mother uncle, aunt, nephews--all speak Zulu fluently!!
You are right , not only Zulu. Other South African languages are spoken by white people where ever they are. Some white people speak Sesotho or Venda fluently.
They a lot of them in the Eastern Cape
I met a white guy in the Eastern Cape who spoke to me in Xhosa and I couldn't understand him cause i'm Zulu
Quite right. My child grew up in this area and speaks fluent Zulu as did his father.
Chris doesn't only speak the language, his mannerisms portray an understanding of the people he's leading. Watch him pass the phone, that hand coordination and courtesy is representative of someone appreciating you. It's sad that there are people who would like to see such efforts fail. Congratulations to the Mayor and his Deputy.

That's true. Even the mindsets would have been different. We would not be competing on the basis of the colour of our skin.
Agreed, unfortunately, we can't change the past. We can work together now, though, to build the future all of our children deserve.

Wow i love this man yazini. We have never seen such in KZN before.
This video needs to be spread far and wide across South Africa before the next elections...Pappas is probably the only person that could lead this country out of the mess that the rest of the politicians have caused
Well I've just watched this, and I live in Germany! So it's definitely getting spread out!
I'm so excited for next year, and really hoping the beautiful country of South Africa gets what it deserves.
The only person, really? You see a white person speaking zulu and now you think they the only option😂
He is a good leader tho hopefully he plays a bigger role in the country
Been saying this, my generation (Post Apartheid babies) will be the one's to change this country. Once all the old bastards running this country die out and the 90's and 2000's take over. It'll be a new south africa.
Too much power in a short space of time can invite jealousy. He must first earn even better results at grassroots level
What a hero!
So refreshing to see a politician doing his job
My associates and I met Chris Pappas when he visited our vegetable farming business to see how we can work together to improve the municipality. Such a well-rounded person with high integrity and he even surprised when he saw our hydroponics/aeroponics system by telling us he built these himself in his college days. He is relentless in his efforts to improve the lives of all and Umngeni is very lucky to have him. I am sure he will make big difference in the next elections.
As a white South African, I can say that this is way you connect with people, with respect and honour. I have wanted to learn Zulu for a while, and again have been inspired to learn.
Bless you Chris, I hope you succeed.
if I may suggest: hang around Zulu people more often and only speak Zulu, you will learn it that way.
@@LethaboMatseke I have indeed started working with a Zulu speaking and have picked up some phrases.👍

The propaganda video worked on you I see. The agenda is US control of South Africa. We will never join with US+UK colonialists and their illegal wars. Never.
I live in Howick, and confirm all the improvements in the district. In one year, the municipality debt was cleared, which is proof of new council 's integrity, efficiency, and diligence. Pappas is an inspiring young leader.

Pappas is one of a kind. He is different, his leadership is inspiring given his age as well. He is definitely the best in the country
He has found the secret to success - SEVERVE the people with honesty and dedication. ANC miss the ploy on that one and have for nearly 30 years.
I am a resident of this municipality. Chris has done so much and his ethos is truly inspirational. I really see him having a shot at the presidency in the future because a lot of us are being disillussioned by the ruling party's failures, and we want them gone!
True
i understand that older black people would not want to vote for a white man because of the past, but what about younger black generations? would they vote for him do you think?
@@lm_b5080 Absolutely! I'm in the under 30 demographic and run a small local business. What he has done for black youth owned businesses has been a boon, opening doors for funding and facilitating free business development programs. These were unheard of in the old leadership, and the little opportunities that were available only benefited those who had special connections to the leadership. Along with igniting a sense of pride in our culturally diverse community, he has revived our sports and tourism sectors, which were previously neglected by the old administration. In short, despite the decades of damage and inequality that still need to be reversed from the old guard, there is a glimmer of hope in the horizon. We are tired of being guilted for not supporting a failing party still holding on to it's past freedom-fighting past. There is a great sense of a need to move on from all the race politics and get things done interms of economic development and service delivery. That's where the majority of young black voters are as we head to the polls next year!
@@lm_b5080 I would vote for him
@lm_b5080 The DA is against NSFAS, which is a bursary given by the government to underprivileged students. That is one of its biggest problems.
I truly believe that Chris Pappas is taking a correct approach. I also feel that he can achieve more if he works more closely with Zulu tribal leaderships if they willing to cooperative and work well together. The ANC has evolved into a one party system riddled with corruption, criminality and lazy good for nothing bureaucrats with no ambition to improve people's lives.
Tribal leaders are very corrupt. All they care is money.
Ronstochler I saluut Chris Pappas with his whole teambuilding Leaders a Mayor for human being with Heart for people as i understand how happy their are with his members and non wealthy so thanks fully with the his helping hands imagine that ingreably thank You for reaction 👍❤

11:38 "Everything has changed, because we have everything now..." I got a lump in my throat when the young lady said that. We forget how privileged we are at times. Our people have such basic needs and requirements but this government failed to deliver even the basics. I think it's a disgrace how people are treated and expected to live after 30 years of democracy. I salute Chris Pappas, His Deputy and their administration for recognizing the needs of the people in the community and bringing on positive change and dignity to their lives.
I learned quite a bit from this documentary. Well done Mr Mayor. You are a true inspiration and fine example of good leadership. Delivering services and bridging cultures.
There is still hope for South Africa ♥️🇿🇦
Thank You for this wonderful documentary!
What an incredible South African. Mayor Pappas is such an inspiration. I love that he is able to converse with his constituents in their home language. We need more of this in Mzansi. Civil servants who actually take the time to explain things to the residents in the municipalities that they are in charge of. Thumbs up to them and may they enjoy more power as a result of their hard work. Keep spreading the gospel of service delivery. Well done to the producers of this short film too. Very insightful and filmed and narrated professionally.
Once in a lifetime comes an Alexander and he becomes The Great...may God keep this young man for South Africa.
May the Almighty protect him please💔😭
This is what is needed in South Africa. ❤
apartheid justice is what is needed....until then
Well done to this Mayor. It is unusual to see a mayor or even councillor interacting positively with the community. And top marks for the community for choosing a mayor on his actions, rather than his political background. This community and mayor should be an inspiration to the rest of SA.
The guy studied economics afterall. Make us proud fellow economist.
Props to him for learning the language. Making the world better by his hard work. Good job

Absolutely this shows us that we are one and can make it if we change our attitudes and embrace each other.
Inspiring story. If only we had this calibre of leadership in the national government, we’d be back on track to prosperity and stability. The threats to his life are symptomatic of how far we have sunk under the ANC.
The most beautiful country. I so hope for RSA. It deserves its dignity to match it’s beauty. Impressive young man. Takes a lot for a young white South African to put his shoulder to the wheel and support his community. This is like a dream.
One of the most inspirational things I have ever seen.
Do you know that the City of Cape Town under the dynamic leadership of Mayor Geordin Hill Lewis is spending 75% of its budget this year on uplifting and building infrastructure in previously disadvantaged areas of the City like Khayelitsha and Philippi?

Just imagine every municipality like this in South Africa. The lives of many can be improved so drastically. I think fear is the only thing holding people back from changing their vote. It doesn't matter the color or gender of the surgeon operating on you, the nurse taking care of you, the pilot flying you - why does this not apply when electing our government officials?
I hope DA don't interfere with the work they are doing and make things too political. Chris Pappas and his Deputy Sandile are really applying themselves. Great that they are hiring more young people.
What do you have against the DA, what about the EFF or ANC...?
If things become politicised the ANC and EFF might try interfere because Papas is DA member@@UA-camGlobalAdminstrator That's the risk if the DA puts the spotlight on uMngeni. Nothing against any parties, Jacqui is just pointing out the danger.

Beautiful. The South Africa that South Africans deserve. ❤
I hope he succeeds in his journey to change the province. This is what the SA needs. Years of corrupt ANC government crippled this beautiful and rich country. Examples like Zuma, Eskom, Gupta's just to name a few. This set the country back with poverty and crime. It's time for the new generation to take over and turn it around. Let's look beyond Race, sex, gender etc.
It's time for a wave of change.
The corruption and incompetency of ANC led government has not helped at all but let’s not pretend that the problems of inequality and relative deprivation are 29yrs old. It’s not like domestic infrastructure like water, sanitation, electricity, housing, quality education etc were widely available. These are centuries old problems which were deliberately engineered, and will need sober minds to take deliberate measures to fix… not this let’s all hug trees and let bygones be bygones. The fact that they voted this man to be mayor it shows that majority have no malice. Unfortunately the Mayor even if he had the best intentions is in the wrong vehicle for that. Democratic Alliance does not believe in redressing these historical injustices in particular denial of access to facilities and equal opportunities by the previous apartheid government.
Thank you, that is the message that needs to echo throughout South Africa.
Great portrait! Chris and Sandile are the future of South Africa.
