What a life he has lived. Imagine the great times DT shared with SRV. No one else got to be as close. I'm reliving SRV again in 2023 and it's actually better this time as it's so much more appreciated.. You dont know what you have till it's gone.
Chris has a style of drumming that is so cool and tight. He's simply the best. Loved listening to his stories.
Yes I’m in awe of SRV but I always marveled at Chris & Tommy (and later Reese) how they never missed a beat. We all know Stevie could sometimes go on a musical tangent but they always sounded whole. Magical is the only word for it.
Chris: "Live gratefully and take this moment seriously." So poignant, bittersweet.
Chris is one of my all-time favorite drummers, and influences, great interview, first class guy!!🤘🤘👊👊💪💪
Me too
I just love this interview. I love hearing Chris talk about his days with Stevie. Though they didn't outright cover his actual death, you could still see the pain start up in Chris' eyes as they approached the subject. They were all truly brothers.
They were the best blues band in the world 1982-1990, Chris and Tommy are the ultimate blues rhythm section, saw them live in '88, best gig I ever saw.
My favorite SRV period is from 79-83. My god I wish I could have seen them
Chris, thank u man. Your an amazing dude. What a freaking amazing drummer as well…. Showed me the Texas shuffle 🙏
Hell Yeah!!! Thank you for this Absolutely Awesome interview! 🤘👽👽👽
Thanks for having a drummer on, Josh! Especially an underrated guy like Chris.
Can never get enough stories out of Chris....he doesnt get enough credit for his contribution. He's my fave drummer after Mitch Mitchell - who also never really got the respect he deserved. Hard to be playing behind a whirlwind is the takeaway...
I was 19 when Stevie died and had only just gotten into him, i can remember where i was when that news came on the radio, devaststed me, he was my 1st taste of the blues, and because he mentioned his sources, he sent me down a life long rabbit hole i never plan from coming out of. But seeing Chris, Tommy and Reece continue on is good to see, and keeps Stevie alive for us too...
Great interview Josh..I remember Stevie Ray and double trouble when it came out ...one of the best rhythm section
Legend. Love the stories! Love the intuition and leaps of faith. The “feels” right vibe...and recognizing Stevie’s special, special talent, and taking that ride! The “family” vibe in Double Trouble. Whole deal. What a Cat!
So glad I watched this…..thank you !
I just love these interviews. Real, fun and invaluable insight into art and the creative mind. Future musicians will be thankful.
Man, great stuff. Thanks for sharing this stuff Chris and Josh. Love hearing these stories.
I remember hearing SRV and Double Trouble for the first time, and instantly being hooked. Stevie instantly became my favorite player, and always will be.
And huge respect to Chris, Tommy, and Reese, all amazing players in their own right. They took a lot of those songs to another level, especially live.
Awesome stories! Thanks Chris!
Listening to the bootlegs from the late 70’s to the early 80’s, I agree (with Josh) that I can hear Stevie getting noticeably better each year. The improvement between 1979 and 1980 is especially noticeable. The stuff he did on the “In The Beginning” recording in April, 1980, is way better than the bootlegs from 78 and 79.
Thank you. This was fantastic. Really hope you guys get to play/record together.
I been listening to Chris since ever now from SRV to Storyville and so and funny enough I have actually never heard a word coming out of him before. What a cool cat and fresh vibe he rocks. Hope he gets well soon and get back on the road. Thanks for this!
Het Chris im 68 man love the drum styl you have
Thank you for this! Josh great interview!
You bet!
What an amazing interview! You pulled all the priceless memories out and Chris was so relaxed with you. Thanks Josh!
Glad you enjoyed it!
This was so enjoyable Josh! Thanks for having Chris on, it was great hearing his stories. You adapted your usual 10 questions perfectly to get a similar vibe and flow to the conversation.
I saw Chris play with the Experience Hendrix tour and he was incredible! I hope you guys do make an album together, that'd be awesome!
About as level headed a guy as there is. Great way of looking at life and pretty damn funny too.
The whole"hang around ppl that don't know your famous" thing is a real testimony towards getting better and being a real person you can talk to, I talked to Chris when he was with Storyville while at a show in VA.
Sorry. A little late to the show here. If there was a bright spot to Covid-19, it was Chris Layton drumming for his friends Mike Flanigin and Sue Foley during a Sunday afternoon residency at a club called Sagebrush in Austin! The music was/is amazing and they considered me a regular! I’ve had some great conversations with Chris. I even got to give him a get well gift when he broke his shoulder! He is just one of the nicest guys ever! This was a wonderful interview! Thanks!
He's such a cool guy and a killer drummer! I would love to hear you guys collaborate on some stuff.
Josh, thank you so much for this interview! Chris is one of my heroes! I encourage drummers to look at how relaxed he is behind the kit. Excellent time, feel, and is one of the best musical drummers! Thanks to Chris for sharing his story and keep kicking the band!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Legend, HatsOff
Hey man love this interview, I also hold double trouble as one of my biggest influences. Whipper is great. 50¢ a turn to listen to album was stiff for back then, wow
I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed this!
Seriously loved this interview. I watched Josh grow up in S. Florida clubs and SRV and Double Trouble was my favorite band. Josh was one of the best young blues guitarists I've ever seen, really matured as a guitarist. Chris is a legend...and what a nice man. I've always been an amateur hack and two strokes made that even more of a challenge, never fully regained control of my left-hand/arm nor memory. Videos like this let the amateurs live a bit vicariously. This was awesome thanks.
Thanks!
What a cool interview Josh!! Rock on brother!!
I know that this was posted a little while ago, but yes I completely agree, these have been amazing interviews!
Stevie Ray Vaughan being one of my biggest Heroes of all time, along with Chris Layton and Tommy Shannon. Wow.
This also resonates with me very powerfully on a personal level as well.
I've been sober for 12 and a half years, and being a Guitar player and a musician, I'm not sure if I would have made it early on in Recovery without Stevie Ray's, and Eric Clapton's examples, having been in Recovery themselves.
I cant even begin to quantify how powerful their examples were for me, and how much inspiration I drew from them not just as incredible musicians, but as people as well.
So, yeah this was absolutely fantastic for me, not just as a fan, but on that extremely personal level as well.
I find myself often reduced to tears many times as I listen to SRV and Double Trouble, and even as I was listening to Chris share some of those stories and his perspective as well.
So Josh, thanks so much man. These interviews that you have done have given me so much inspiration as well, especially during the past year or so during these crazy times man.
You're freaking awesome in your own right, and you've definitely become a personal hero of mine in the past few years as well.
All the best to you and yours. 🙏
Josh this is great. I love these interviews. This one especially as SRV is my hero. Thanks.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Chris Layton and John Bonham are the best drummer's ever!
ThnX, Chris & Josh!!!!!!!

Luv you Chris
great interview, really enjoyed it
Just tremendous Josh!
Live from flat five....what a cool name for a studio!
Big double trouble fan...big josh fan too.....great stuff
Cool that interview!! Some nice stories
This was super awesome.
Great stuff Josh! Nailed it again
The name of the show is “Whipper and the goddamn ceiling fan”
This was great! Thank you!
You're so welcome!
Amazing interview.
Brilliant, thanks.
This is crazy! I love this dude.. you took the words right out of my head.. a huge double trouble fan since I was like 10-11... that unmistakable shuffle and Tommy's Baselines can't be forgotten damnit! Saw them live in Syracuse NY fairgrounds with Kenny Wayne Shepherd in the early 2000's probably 2002... It was awesome to see because sadly with Stevie passing I didn't quite know if I'd ever see the band live they had a woman singer I don't know her name?? If anyone does know her name I'd appreciate it ! Thanks 👍 Josh
That was great. It’s always compelling listening to musicians talk about music. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Great interview thanks!!
Thanks for listening
Awesome interview - Chris has so many stories and wisdom to share, he probably doesn't even realize it which takes someone to "pull" the stories out. Loved the comments about "nuances" of the shuffle and how having the right trio was far more important than planning what they would do...just knowing something great will come from having the right 3 guys (and later 4) together. Chris seems like a super guy...also seems he has some great potential as a producer - wonder if he has any interest in that area
Great stuff
Awesome!!
Josh, you and Martin Miller should do another session. I loved your collaboration you did a year or so ago. That was epic.
Good drummer.BLUES POWER!
Wow! The Whipper!!!!
Magic
Very cool
U Rock Chris
His Jimmie Vaughan impression was spot on lol
Double Trouble is the greatest!
HA! JOSH-"OF COURSE HE SAID THAT."
1:16:32 Josh - Man I hope we get to make some music together soon
Chris - Hey, let's do that!
: < )
Wheup!!!
glen miller yaaaaa how my dad to .. big brass
Whipper!
Was the guitar volume the reason for the vocal mic he used?
Double trouble!
What happened to Chris, did he wreck his motorcycle and break his bones, really didn't touch on that much so I was wondering
I wanna jam with you asap
