Omaha is the largest city in the U.S. state of Nebraska and the county seat of Douglas County. Founded in 1854, the city of Omaha has always been a dynamic, energetic city continually transforming itself.
Whether it was the Native American Indian tribes, pioneers, railroad laborers or meat packers, everyone who came to call Omaha home helped shape its current cultural diversity, hard work ethic, and friendly demeanor. Named after an American Indian Tribe, Omaha means "Those going against the wind or current", Omahans proudly continue to live up to the name.
The city was founded along the Missouri River, and a crossing called Lone Tree Ferry earned the city its nickname, the "Gateway to the West". Omaha introduced this new West to the world in 1898, when it played host to the World's Fair, dubbed the Trans-Mississippi Exposition. During the 19th century, Omaha's central location in the United States spurred the city to become an important national transportation hub. Throughout the rest of the 19th century, the transportation and jobbing sectors were important in the city, along with its railroads and breweries. In the 20th century, the Omaha Stockyards, once the world's largest, and its meatpacking plants gained international prominence.
Presently, Omaha is the home to the headquarters of four Fortune 500 companies: conglomerate Berkshire Hathaway; one of the world's largest construction companies, Kiewit Corporation; insurance and financial firm Mutual of Omaha; and the United States' largest railroad operator, Union Pacific Corporation.
In recent years, the Omaha riverfront and downtown area have experienced tremendous growth with over two billion dollars in new development. A one-of-a-kind $22 million pedestrian bridge S-curves its way across the Missouri River, the signature, cable-stayed Bob Kerrey Bridge is one of the longest pedestrian bridge projects ever constructed, giving Omaha visitors a breathtaking view of the ever-changing skyline.
Currently, the 42nd largest city in the United States, the metropolitan area is home to over 900,000 people. @atravelandrelax

at 10:00, you can see the crane and construction site for the future tallest building in omaha. a 677 foot tall glass tower for Mutual of Omaha. gonna be so sick in a few months when the skeleton of the building gets constructed

In the early days of the city downtown Omaha undoubtedly had a pulse; meaning pedestrians on the streets. But after the early 50's when I grew up there, except for the Old Market it has been a kind of eerie ghost town. There are offices and cars but no people like in an episode of Twilight Zone. In '79 I left and I've been to some big towns and heard me some big talk on streets filled with throngs of people but deep down inside I'll always be a guy from Omaha. The Big O.
