XBox has more content than why company you named. They aren't competing for storefronts and hardware, they're going to create content... Plenty of publishers are more valuable than the storefronts they supply with content. The money is in selling content and services, in that area I think they are dominant.
Honestly I think they are competing with, not Steam, but Valve. The Steamdeck was a declaration of breaking away from Windows. The competition ISNT about the storefront... it's about keeping the currently popular Windows OS (which MS makes a LOT of money on between companies and pre-installs... yeah some of us buy keys to put on custom built machines but thats an afterthought for how much they make on companies buying licenses INCLUSING the prebuilt market) the most popular. Valve releasing a successful piece of hardware running those same games on Linux is a warning. Other distros taking what Valve's done and putting it on other machines (example Bazzite) is a bigger warning since now it shows there is a push. Valve releasing their distro to the world to use on ANYTHING THEY LIKE, is a threat. And I expect them offering it to the same prebuilds is an emminent danger.
I think without an Xbox console, the gamepass subscription is in more competition with a steam/valve over Sony/nintendo. Once there are no consoles, the play on gamepass and purchase later will be PC only as I doubt Sony/nintendo consoles will allow you to purchase games from the Microsoft/windows accounts.. that’s a major part of gamepass that people forget.. games come Off of it, they have their own platform to purchase games from, and they are discounted.. that’s a more steam/valve type process than Sony / Nintendo
I'm in the top 10% of Xbox gamers, I'm one of those "fanboys" (I just like the platform, I love gamepass), and if there's one thing I just don't understand is the pearlclutching of exclusives. Trust me I get it. It sells consoles and builds the ecosystem(traditionally). But c'mon to us gamers who gives a, that's something the accountants care about. WE should care about playing games... I've had a tough year.. money is tight, been living paycheck to paycheck basically, don't have expendable money to buy every game I want to play... but my yearly wrapup showed me that I played (tried out) 93 games this year. This has brought me joy, this has brought me comfort throughout the year... There's always room for the Porsches in the market, but let's not ignore the importance of the Subaru BRZ that brings that ethos to more people. None of this is black and white. PS is doing the right things, Nintendo is doing the right things, Steam is killing it. And I think you nailed it Julien in saying that Xbox is just shifting, they're not fighting the others on their home turf. We should applaud that because hopefully they can make a slick OS, that works on thousands of different types of devices and spurs a whole new competition between 3rd party handhelds. Why build one yourself when you can have 10 companies make 10 different types of Xbox handhelds.... (I'm daydreaming, but that's what Windows is; Dell, HP, Lenovo, Asus, etc)
Not going to lie I’ve been a PlayStation guy my whole life with this generation. I have completely used my Xbox series X 10 times more than my PS5. I personally think strictly thinking about how the console works. The Xbox is the better system and their upcoming titles. I’m more excited for than anything. PlayStation has coming out. A vowed and fable look freaking amazing. It’s disappointing to see some of their exclusives come to PlayStation however, I think Xbox is gonna dig itself out of the hole. No, I don’t think they’ll ever surpass PlayStation but I think there is a place in people’s home for an Xbox console still
Their play anywhere is pretty cool, but I think gamepass is only good when it’s cheap, and the price will only keep going up. They either fail to grow as much as they wanted and raise prices, or they grow like crazy and raise prices. That’s a trap. But it can be very beneficial if you use it strategically while it’s still cheap.

As an xbox owner I have to say your take on Microsoft's new moves is refreshing. I'm not salty that their games are no longer exclusive tbh. I mostly appreciate the ease of access it offers. I can play my games on my Series X or on my gaming laptop all the same while I'm out. It's great. Is it different? Sure. But everything is different in the world of gaming these days. And this is coming from being an Xbox 360 player during the glory halo 3 custom games days.

Which is what it doesn't need and all 3 companies have issues so ms could have taken advantage this gen but they aren't which sucks but despite this they still are in the console fight just more harder

Well, I have almost 600 games on Steam and I've had PC Game Pass for years now, but I also own an Xbox so for me Game Pass Ultimate makes more sense. If I just had a PC I'd probably still have Game Pass but maybe not subbed every month.
I think it's fair to say that Xbox gave up in the traditional console competition. They clearly understand that they aren't going to defeat Sony and are trying to pivot to something that will allow them to survive and hopefully grow. As a Series X owner, my only concern is the future of the console platform. With Xbox's new message basically being around Xbox becoming a service and not a box anymore, it's logical to expect Xbox console sales to decline slowly but surely. What happens to the games that I bought on the Xbox console store when the console no longer makes sense to keep making? Your purchases on that store do not transfer one to one with the Xbox app on Windows. Only the "Play Anywhere" titles. Most of my library isn't included on that list and none of the backwards compatible games (OG Xbox and 360) are included. So while I understand why Xbox is doing what it's doing, I'm not buying any more games on that platform. Steam makes more sense now for a digital library and I buy physical on Switch when the mood strikes me. If that's what Xbox wants, then cool.

"A lot of devs"? Can you name these devs because I've heard the opposite, especially the indie devs. Stalker 2 would have never happened without Game Pass as Microsoft help fund the game's development
I initially bought both the Series X and PS5 at launch, thinking the Series X would be the more powerful console so I would play multiplats on that, meanwhile playing exclusives on the PS5. That ended up not really being the case, with PS5 generally being the same or sometimes even better performing. Once Microsoft bought Bethesda though, I thought we were in for an awesome console war, battling exclusives. That sadly did not come anywhere close to happening either! Lol. Since, I sold my Series C because honestly it is just entirely redundant with the Ps5 at this point, and now that I have the Pro it is the clear winner concerning power. All came out in the wash, I’m happy to be back exclusively with Sony for my modern gaming. The PS5 Pro was like a love letter to people like myself who really want the most power possible, but also like the convenience of consoles over PC.

I’d say they are def making money hand over fist and based on those numbers I don’t see how they couldn’t be profitable.
A lot of devs themselves are not happy to see their games on the gamepass, even tho they know it might be better for discoverability, they are still way better supported if you buy them on other platforms, per their own admission.
