Sweet project so useful. I needed to design something similar I shall start from this and let you know once it is done.

haha. This is ridiculous. It looks like something I used to see in the old buildings I worked in in NYC. Like how they would control an elevator or something with a bunch of relay logic. Very cool.

These types of relays are also used for switching telephone signals, maybe I can repurpose the board for some things like that later.

I'm so glad to have found this video, it was so helpful. I've been toying with the idea of doing the same thing for guitar effects myself, but with zero experience of using these kinds of components. I'm a programmer by trade, so that side is familiar, but the rest of it...!
I've (rather stupidly?!) settled on using a crosspoint switch (AD8113), since that gives me the 16 "channels" I'll need, but now got to figure out how to mount/solder it, communicate with it, and get it to do what I want. Sometimes I wonder why I do these things 😂 Thank you for filling in some gaps for me though, as the principles here at least feel like they're applicable to my project too!

I hope to resume working on the next step in this project in the next year, I was hoping to have gotten further by now but other things came up.
i’ll have to look at that cross point switch, I wanted to have relays for true bypass especially if there are multiple effects engaged with possible impacts from using electronic components to do the switching but there’s also advantages to having the chips doing some of the switching for certain other features.
The biggest problem I run into is having so many relays makes the board large so I’m also trying to think of ways to provide interconnection so I can just have a bunch of smaller boards and link them up, so many things to sort out when I get back to it.

@@GadgetReboot That's awesome to hear, good luck with it! Yeah, the true bypass thing is something I considered, too, and with my (very) limited knowledge, the AD8113 has low enough distortion/general effects on the signal to make it worth a punt. Worst case it won't work how I'd like but I will have learned something along the way!
I considered going down the route you have, but thought for the number of relays I'd need for a 16x16 one-to-one matrix, it'd be too large a footprint for what I'd like. Maybe I should just save up and get a GigRig G3 and open it up to see how Dan and the team did it, though cost was the reason I went down the DIY route in the first place

The G2 and G3 were what inspired me to give it a try, and I wished I had a way to open one up but I think it's over $1000 so that's not going to happen! But I tried to listen to any hints about what's in there like the foot switches are optical instead of mechanical, and the word "Relay" and true bypass meant the main paths aren't going through any buffers/electronics, and I'm still not sure but there was once mention that settings stay even when power is turned off, so I wasn't sure if that meant a battery backup stores everything done, or if it meant the relays are latching, so as soon as it engages, it will stay that way until a new control signal comes, so I think I have as much info as I am going to get by watching those shows, now it's up to me!

I'm guessing that those double stacked jacks you got in an earlier video are for hooking up the peddles and/or the modifiers.

That’s one of the ways I’m using the jacks, there’s still more that they will be repurposed for and I think I need to build another board to double the amount I have.
