I agree. I discover so much more by hand watering and I feel like I'm more involved in nurturing my plants. I think I'm even a little prouder of my efforts because of the added involvement I've had through hand watering

I have been a gardener for over 15 years and I have noticed that people with a real passion for gardening almost always hand water.
It is a good way to keep an eye on all your garden.

Great video! I like to hand water too, that way I can keep tabs on how the plants are doing. Especially in the winter it works since all the hoses freeze in Idaho.

Thanks for the info. Also, thanks for waiting to make the video after a bit of time using the item. Many people make reviews without even using the item at all. A few months makes a difference in such a big way. I did not even think about the fact that someone can steal it off the stand. That was a golden nugget. I like to water by hand because I can plan my time without interruption.

I discovered Hoselink via Mark's Self Sufficient Me UA-cam review video. It is a game changer to no longer have to fight with the heavy and twisted long hose which consists of 2 or 3 connected hoses. This cuts down my time spent watering the plants and leaves me more time to tend to other garden needs. I purchased the 82 ft hose and now anxiously anticipating the 100 ft hose to come out next year.

I get your point about inspection, but apart from early plant establishment, I find sprinklers a real time saver. The biggest problem I have with hand watering, is that not being on a town supply I have a lot of sediment in my garden water - this means that the hand sprays block quickly and I have to spend time cleaning them! Still interesting to have a review on the hoselink product - sounds like good value for money as you could easily spend that much on a couple 'cheap and nasty" reels!

Just bought one on your recommendation. I figured your honesty is really on show in your videos and that has been key to your success. I'm confident I've made the right decision and thank you for the advice to go this direction. I have a Holman reel currently around the back and I can't say it's been a pleasant experience, so the new addition that'll go on the front of the place will be a different story I'm sure, and the extra money spent will be worth it.

Hey, Mark. Been watching your vids since around when you started and I just want to say that I was really impressed by how you've really grown into presenting this channel. Compare how comfortable, confident and articulate you are in this video to one around a year ago, like when your doggy was bitten by a tick- it's remarkable. Congratulations, it really seems like you've found your calling :)

Hi Mark, I've had hoselink gear so many years and it's bloody brilliant mate !! I'm with you, the lever type is must better for ME than the trigger one because it just works better with wet hands I think !! I just love hand watering for ALL the reasons you mentioned and I also use it to get rid of spider webs under the eaves, and to squirt those bloody Indian miner birds away, flying rats they are, they'll pick the bloody eyes out of ALL the good fruit and veggies the bastards so I hit them up the clacker with my hoselink. That's sorts them out !! Seeya Rob

You've sold me, I heard about this company from a UA-camr Garden Answers, which I love and then I searched it further and found YOU! Currently, I don't see that Hoselink is offered via Amazon, but that may be a current situation due to wordly issues now, who knows. Anywhoooo, I'm going to order one. I further appreciate your tip about the spray nozzle preferences too.

    I have had 2 x 30mt hose link reels for 5 years.
I agree the lever sprayer is far better than the trigger.
Just some of my experiences with 5 years if use are.
Brackets to mount hose reel could be stronger as they do twist a bit causing reel to look out of level on wall.
Mounting them in direct sunlight will break down the plastic
I have had one under cover since new and it's still new the other has been in the elements and plastic has broken down over 3 years.
I would recommend a cover for these as the mechanical part of the the reel
Will last for a long time.
I am still using the original fittings after
    5 years.
About to purchase at least 1 more.
    Thanks

Agree with all your reasons for hand watering, and would add that for some plants, such as tomatoes, being able to direct water to the base (not leaves) is important to prevent disease; so hand watering is also my preferred method. Thanks Mark for another useful and entertaining video!

Love the video Mark, I also love hand watering and agree with you on all points especially for the relaxation meditative aspect. I use Hoselink as well and thought it is worth mentioning something you forgot to point out, and that is the fact that they never leak like other fittings do. This is a big plus when hand watering and a key reason I like to use these fittings. Keep up the good work! Merry Xmas to you and your family.

Looks like a great product and one I’m in dire need of,all the reasons you mentioned I’m in agreement with ,especially keeping an eye on your plants and their particular needs, which all vary. At the present I haul around 2 150 feet of hose in two locations one in front and one on back ...many times I’ve thought of a watering system In ground but the maintenance and cost to buy ,repairs etc is not viable plus it keeps me fit and I get to connect with nature early in the morning as my day starts,I’ve already purchased four of your raised bed recommendations due here the end of June and we are looking forward to being much more self sufficient,we love your great ideas and informative channel and presentations and although we are in the hot sunny area of the US the coastal south many of your ideas will work here as well...Many thanks and stay blessed.

I liked the review a lot mate. It was well considered and very honest. It speaks volumes that you bought one after the trial. I tend mostly to hand water unless it gets really dry. Then I use the irrigation to save work. The plus for my irrigation is that it is rainwater, not town water . Having said that, yeah, the riser maintenance is an absolute pain.

I already had my reasons why I liked to water by hand, so when I saw this title I was interested in Mark’s reasoning as well. Turns out they are pretty identical. The inspection aspect is the most important, instead of not checking on you’re garden for days at a time you see the plants daily. There isn’t many better ways though to start each day watching the sunrise with a cup of coffee and watering the garden. I’ve also been curious what hose reel to invest in as well. Did hoselink give Mark an advertisement code for the plug and a discount for the purchase? Want to help him continue being self sufficient and putting out great videos ✌️🍻

Great video Mark, my only reservation about using that device is that many plants should not get the leafs wet, tomatoes is one that come to my mind.

I have harlequin beetle issues in my garden but when I hand water they all come out and it makes it easier to spray them and keep their numbers in check.
The pesky little rainbows from hell suck all the sap from my plants. So I make a strong solution of Earth Choice dishwashing liquid and water in a spray bottle, then water the plants and spray the beetles. They die pretty quickly because the dishwashing liquid blocks their breather holes. Chemical pesticides don't work on these beetles so it's good that a product that isn't toxic is actually the best solution.
Hoselink is on my Wishlist for my garden now. I have heard all good reviews from family and friends about their hose and watering products.
    😄

SPURT!.... Mark loves a good Spurt it seems.
I actually have learnt from a lot of my plants that watering just the base and not SPURTing all over them works well.... I grew up in Brisbane (The Gap) so I know how humid it can get.... living now in Adelaide and completely different climate.
Sorry... back to SPURTing.. I like to HAND water too :P
So happy Mark finds it easy to Pull it out and it's nice smooth... Def what I'm gonna ask for when buying a hose at Bunnings.... I wanna be able to Extract / retract it fast and it needs to feel smooth.

Sometimes when you have a cheap hosepipe you spend too much time untangling it. I tried something with my strawberry plants which is irrigation tubing attached to a water barrel. Strawberries can get a constant dribble of water when its really hot but I have to say I got to spend a few hours messing around with it to get it working right.

    That's solid advice.
In a couple of months I will be moving from a flat/apartment to a property with a garden. Initially I had planned to go the high-tech route and have monitoring equipment for soil temperature, moisture, weather and humidity as well as an automated watering system (I'm not bad with my raspberry pi programming). I do however see the logic in watering by hand so I will compromise. I will have scanning equipment as you can never have too much information but I will water by hand and do a manual inspection at the same time.

  • @eg3534
    @eg3534 5 років тому

This kinda goes with maintenance, but if an automatic watering system fails, it can easily over-water your garden and cause root rot. I've seen this happen with soaker hoses that are under constant pressure and when a coupling fails an entire area can be fouled up over night.

Hi Mark, My entire yard is about the size of your raised bed garden area so I’m unsure if I will ever purchase the retractable Hose Reel After many years of tossing fairly new non functioning sprayers that always leaked and broke easily I watched your videos on the retractable hose reel and the one on unclogging your sprayer. I bit the bullet and ordered the Hoselink spray nozzle and the connectors. Now I have to wait this huge rain storm out that we are having so I can hook them up to my hose and hand water! So, from Australia you influenced my purchase in northern California, USA. Glad to hear the Hoselink people are treating you well! I hope they realize how far reaching your voice is heard.

Hand watering can keep your watery bill down and when water restrictions are in place it is just a must do.
The only time I don't is when the heat had really dried the beds as my beds are very small grow bags and sometimes a 30 of the sprinkler is the only way to wet the area properly.
    I love their connectors....

I hand water as well, the main reason I do this is my garden is very young, less than 3 years, and is still being expanded, new beds and trees added so an automatic system would have to be continuously modified and that would change the pressure at each dripper & thus the time each 'Zone' would have to be on. Living in the tropics we also have a very wet 'Wet season' and a contrasting 'Dry season' so the timers on the system would have to be adjusted up and down every 6 months!

Mark, what do you do when you need to be away for more than a few days at a time? I've used drip irrigation for a few years, and think that the plants prefer the water from a hose than dripped into the soil. But our hot spring (Peachester, not far from you), Crematoria as Jerry Coleby Williams calls it, means plants can't go more than a day or so without water.

The throw outs and the tip is full of cheap hoses (and tangles of nylon rope, that in waterways entangle poor animals). This was a great review. Hopefully it will give people the knowledge to get a premium unit that could hopefully last a lifetime and be passed down (inherited) as this will greatly reduce hose waste.
My cheap hose bends and knots easily ....ugh...it is a pain in the butt.

Water where I am is not cheap. My monthly bill (and it is just me and my cats) is around $80 a month. That includes sewer and garbage/recyles. But on months where I wash my car more, or do some watering, my water bill shoots up a lot. If you are on a well, I think it makes a lot of difference, and I'm not. That is why I think heavy mulching is so important, and drip irrigation cuts way down on wasted and evaporated surface water. Watering just where we need it is important, and for that reason, I think that using a hose with no nozzle can be very useful. It is gentle coming out, and it goes right to the root of the plant, rather than just spraying everywhere. Tomorrow I am going to mulch some plants I have, as they are big enough now. Mulch and compost are so important, and if you use your own yard waste and bush/tree trimmings, you will have a never-ending supply. Weeds and invasive vines become mulch, and very valuable.

Thanks for the review of hose link products. I've seen the adds but being incredibly low income I can't afford to splurge on expensive products unless I know it'll work and really last.

Hoselink is worth the money because you save yourself physical strain having to fight with dragging around and tripping on your standard hose. I see it as you can't afford to not get it to avoid the physical strain, reduce your time out in high heat and save time to do other garden tasks.

All good reasons to hand water ... Added to the maintenance here is breakage due to winter freezing ... Plus I container garden so automated would be a bugger for me to set up and not cost efficient ...

I water mine by hand also. I really like your Tall, organized raised beds. May I ask what kind of materials they are? Just curious, of course it couldn't be possible for me because looks like something that needs a man strength to do it. Thanks so much for sharing. I love all your vids.

the beauty of watering by hand is getting the water to the roots of plants where there is a thick canopy of leaves. showers of rain don't penetrate the soil very well. here in the uk we are often hit with hose-pipe bans so the water butts come into their own. perfect use. .i won't use butt water for seedlings in the greenhouse...…………….brian

I love my hoselink, and i definately agree with all your points, even when i did try hoselinks weeper hose I found I was still hand watering at times just because I wanted to. Plus a hose is great for spraying off mealy bugs and aphids. If I am time poor sometimes I use a sprinkler. Have you tried the hose link weeper? Be curious to see your opinion on it.

Oh the best reason for watering by hand is that as you walk around and inspect you can pick and eat. Watering time is also snack time for me.

The only thing holding me back from buying one is it really appears that this product really limits the water pressure. Can you give me your thoughts on the water pressure? Would you prefer it to be a bit stronger? Is it adequate for you?

Some plants (5 rows x 25 ft long) are better being watered by microirrigation on a schedule and some (containers, bell peppers) need a little less water, so they get hand watering. Some weeks rain is enough. Best of both worlds.

All good reasons, if you have the water to spare. Are you on town or bore water? We only have 11 thousand gallons of rainwater tanks for the family, and when it doesn't rain for months, the garden is the first to be cut from the rations list. When we were living in town with a municipal water supply, I used to love hand watering. Most of the time, I just use a watering can now - just to keep plants alive, between rain events.

    • @Selfsufficientme
      @Selfsufficientme  5 років тому +1

We have a bore that's our primary water source but we also have tank water and a small dam also that could be used if full. Cheers :)
