    That’s exactly what I do! I use both collagen and whey powder for the precise reasons that you state. Glad to have the consensus.

    Should I supplement with a collagen AND a protein powder? Are the collagen powders without Fortibone even worth taking for those of us with osteopenia/osteoporosis??

    • @sarahmapes_bonebuildersystem
      @sarahmapes_bonebuildersystem  3 місяці тому

      I think the answer to this depends on your budget. If you have to just pick one then I would go with a protein powder that has all the essential amino acids. If your budget allows for both, then yes, I think taking a collagen one day and a whey based protein powder on another day is a good way to go. Our bodies benefit from variety and both collagen and protein powders are helpful.
      There may be other really good collagen out there besides Fortibone, but they have not been scientifically studied, so for right now I would stick to collagen that has Fortibone. ❤

    Is playing Pickle Ball bad for osteoporosis die to the bending and twisting

    • @sarahmapes_bonebuildersystem
      @sarahmapes_bonebuildersystem  Місяць тому +2

      The answer to this one is that it depends. There are good things about pickleball like building strength and improving balance. That said it is important to be mindful as you play to make sure that you don't play to the fullest. You don't want to take any sudden dives for the ball. Twisting slowly and with control is alright, but I would be careful to not go full out with a fast big twist... Playing pickleball is okay if you are careful with your movements. You may want to avoid it out of an abundance of caution. If you love playing then modify your game in a safe way. I hope that is helpful❤

    I was watching a functional doctor say protein powder is not really healthy because it spikes insulin, specifically, the amino acid leucine does that. Do you have any opinion on this? I did ask her if collagen peptides does the same since it is processed into fine powder. She was not sure.

    • @sarahmapes_bonebuildersystem
      @sarahmapes_bonebuildersystem  3 місяці тому +2

      My two cents about this is nuanced. The amino acids that are involved in bone building include proline, glycine, lysine, arginine, and hydroxyproline. Lucien is not on that list, but leucine is helpful for our muscles. Leucine can raise insulin, but it is that spike that allows it to help repair our muscles. Insulin helps get both glucose (sugar which our bodies use for energy) and amino acids into our muscles cells. Our bodies need a certain amount of sugars. Raising insulin is not necessarily a bad thing in our bodies. We want our sugars to come from complex carbohydrates and fruits and vegetables. We want our sugar consumption to be a small part of what we eat, but our bodies need sugars because they are involved in the creation of energy for each of our cells.
      In choosing a protein powder, I would look for one that does not have any added sugars. Look for one that is plain or unflavored rather than a chocolate or vanilla flavor.
      Let me know if you have more questions ❤

    I just read and verified it with Dr. Google, that collagen powders can cause hypercalcemia and/or hyperparathyroidism!
    Could you elaborate on this?

    • @sarahmapes_bonebuildersystem
      @sarahmapes_bonebuildersystem  3 місяці тому +3

      In general collagen does not contain much in the way of calcium which would make it highly unlikely that collagen cold cause hypercalcemia or hyperparathyroidism. Hypercalcemia happens when too much calcium is in the blood, which can then lead to a variety of symptoms like fatigue, bone pain, kidney stones, and confusion as part of hypercalcemia. Collagen does not naturally have calcium in it. You would have to find a weird collagen supplement that has calcium added to it in too high an amount to be able to have something like hypercalcemia happen.
      Hyperparathyroidism happens when the parathyroid hormone (PTH) produces too much. The parathyroid hormone helps to regulate how much calcium is in out blood, but there is no direct connection between
      collagen and the parathyroid hormone or a risk of developing hyperparathyroidism.
      I am not sure what you came across on Google. Sometimes there are some weird and not reputable things that pop up on the internet. I am sorry that you ran into something weird. Let me know if you still have questions about this.

    Very good info. I'm glad I bought Hemp Protein Powder! I was hoping you'd state recommended daily amount. I've heard anything from 1/2 gm per body lbs to 1 gm per body lbs. What say you?

    • @sarahmapes_bonebuildersystem
      @sarahmapes_bonebuildersystem  3 місяці тому +1

      The answer to that depends on how much body building you are doing. If you are going to the gym and lifting heavy and working on bulking up in order to build stronger bones then I would go with 1 gm per pound of body weight, but if you are doing a regular amount of exercise and trying to improve your bone health, I would go with 1/2 gm per pound of body weight.❤

    But why is collagen protein so heavily pushed for osteoporosis?? It's way more expensive especially the higher the quality the more expensive it is , what's a collagen powder is more beneficial for joints and not necessarily bones is it still worth the high cost? Or are there other things we can take or foods better for our joints?
    I do use both whey and vegan protein powder I definitely prefer vegan protein powder over whey protein but is collagen a waste of money or does it have some benefit?

    • @sarahmapes_bonebuildersystem
      @sarahmapes_bonebuildersystem  3 місяці тому +2

      Collagen has some specific amino acids that are directly involved in building bone. It is beneficial for bones. Collagen just doesn't usually have a complete amino acid profile. Protein powders generally do have complete amino acid profiles. Protein powders help build muscles and our bones. Both collagen and protein powders are helpful for our bones. They just help in slightly different ways. Protein powder helps build muscles that then helps build bone while collagen helps to build bone directly. We need to have strong muscles in order to maintain our bones though.
      Choosing a high quality plant based protein powder is just fine. Whey is a milk based protein and not everyone can do dairy. If your body can handle dairy then consider doing a whey based protein powder because it has been scientifically shown to help build muscle. Ultimately, listen to your body and your budget.
      I don't think you are are going to go wrong with either a whey or plant based protein powder or collagen. All of these options will help improve your bone health even if they do it in slightly different ways ❤

      @@sarahmapes_bonebuildersystem I see so they all have some benefit to bones , but I don't understand why collagen powder is so expensive,,
      Sometimes I mix both plant protein powder and whey protein powder
      For example I'll mix plant protein in my oatmeal but I'll have a cup of milk with whey protein , hopefully combining the two will make a super protein LOL but I just noticed grocery prices jumped up more in price so I might have to pick or choose I might have to eliminate collagen powder , besides animal foods are there other foods that contain collagen?

    • @sarahmapes_bonebuildersystem
      @sarahmapes_bonebuildersystem  3 місяці тому +2

      Collagen is expensive. If it does not fit in your budget it's okay. I would prioritize the protein powder because it has a complete amino acid profile.
      Collagen has specific amino acids (these are the building blocks of proteins) that do certain things. With Fortibone it has amino acids that are involved in laying down the first layers of new bones. That is an important job, but keep in mind that protein powders also have those same amino acids and others. If you prioritize one, I would choose the protein powder ❤

    I already take healthy bones collagen powder, but I would like to add in maybe a hemp protein powder but in looking on the Internet, there are so many. Do you have any that you recommend? I have high cholesterol so need to avoid anything that would add to that which is why I was considering the hemp/Pea protein powder.

    • @sarahmapes_bonebuildersystem
      @sarahmapes_bonebuildersystem  3 місяці тому

      Hemp and pea based protein powders are going to be a good choice. I don't have specific ones that I recommend, but I would have a look at Costco and see what you find. I periodically see a good pea protein powder at Costco. If you don't have a Costco by you then I would look at your local health food store and see what is available.
      I think the healthy bones collagen powder is a good option ❤

      If you are eating a vegetarian diet, I would choose to use a pea or hemp based protein powder that has a complete amino acid profile. This will have the amino acids that are in collagens and also additional amino acids. This will be beneficial for both muscles and bones ❤
