Haven't even started the video yet but I have to say, your video topics are so radically earnest and true to you, it shows that you're legitimately talking about music you love. This album was always an outlier in Alex Turner's discography and I'm amazed to see someone sit down and dissect it for all the gorgeous tidbits. You are going to become a landmark channel for musical analysis I tell you!!
I can’t tell you how encouraging it is to read a comment like this 😭 thank you so much, you are so kind. As a Libra who is constantly worried they’re coming across as inauthentic, this really means a lot ❤️
I’ve seen the album art for this movie and I don’t know what it was But I had the urge to watch it tonight and through it I found your video so I’m very happy for that I loved your analysis
As someone who loves Alex Turner, Arctic Monkeys and Richard Ayoade, this was such a wonderful video. And your breakdown of the lyrics was truly so well articulated. As someone who isn't British, this video also helped contextualise some of the lyrics and I feel like I understand the songs more now, even though I rewatch this movie every year haha. Thanks for your work. ✨
OMG the music was one of the main reasons I was super drawn to this movie and it's still one of my favourites!! So stoked for this video :) Honor you are amazing ❤❤
This soundtrack has stayed with me since my ex forced me to watch this movie almost 10 years ago!!! I loved your Unreal Unearth series. Seems we have similar tastes so I’m excited to see what you cook up next!
"so whimsical but so vivid" - holy crow, that's the perfect way to frame Turner's songwriting. I've always enjoyed how the Arctic Monkeys are in that rare percentage of musicians who get the instrumental and lyrical parts of a song perfectly level. I guess I wasn't as much as a Richard Ayoade fan as I thought I was because I totally missed this movie. (Or I wasn't as steeped in my Anglophilia in 2010.) So in addition to the movie or book, I'll have to track down this soundtrack. (And yes, the actor who plays Oliver does look like Turner - I wonder if we was cast before Alex was asked to write the soundtrack?) For me, I think a soundtrack is such a powerful tool in movies (or television) and when they are written or compiled earnestly, it just elevates the film. I'm so tired of lazy soundtracks by filmmakers - it detracts from the movie for me.
I couldn’t agree more! Make Soundtracks Great Again 🙌 so many great ones come to mind from the early 2010s but I can’t think of any really memorable ones from the past few years, apart from A Simple Favour maybe - I love a bit of French music!
