Great little, all in one, recording mixer. Perfect for my setup. This, and a collection of volcas +Microfreaks, would be sweet, for park bench (any remote location), multi track recorded jams. This would also be great if, it could be made to fit in a Eurorack setup, with a side panel, to make all the connections available from the front. Stuck with you at the special time in 2020?! Jeez, you guys was one of the things holding us up! Thanks for the great time you have given us all in the shitty year that shall remain nameless. Now, onwards with the video :D
Really missing the ability to side-chain. Would love to see it implemented exactly like the Polyend Tracker has done it with the master limiter. Great review as always!
Cheers Nick, I like this a lot. If lockdown hadn't fornicated my finances I could see this at the centre of my multiple powerbank juiced looper pedalboard. Ah well. Best wishes. :)
Good review Nick. I think it is a fairly niche product. As you say, if it fits your bill in terms of needing a small form factor then this probably is the only game in town. Nick mentions the Behringer XR18 as an alternative but don’t forget there is also the Soundcraft Ui24r which has relatively small form factor, line and mic inputs and you can record direct from that to USB stick in various formats. I picked one of these up early last year for £619 so not too much more than the Bluebox for probably a better product overall. However if you want a multitrack recorder that fits in the palm of your hand then Bluebox seems a worthy contender (assuming you can find the cable adapters to fit). 👍
Just ordered one and looks perfect for my modular and synth setups. I do wish that you could export files from the SD card into Ableton format files like they provide in the Bitbox modules. Adding a USB audio interface would make this even better.
A per-track tuner would be nice (I'd use it with eurorack). That and per-track LFOs, I would personally find super useful. Some additional effects could be handy as well. I'm saving for this as is anyways.
It's ideal for mixing other tiny stuff or modular, if it had XLR, you guess it would be much bigger. So it's a choice. Personally I use a Tascam Model 12 for the big setup and the Bluebox will complement but not replace it.
Thanks for the helpful review! If you were to run a standard trs 3.5mm audio cable from the black box to the bluebox could you still record two separate channels/outputs from the blackbox on the bluebox? Or do you have to split the signal coming out of the black box and then rejoin them with another splitter?
Hey Nick, I've noticed that a lot of people have not reviewed the Akai Force. The recent 3.0.5 and 3.0.6 updates have really turned it into an impressive machine. There is plenty to criticize, but despite it seeming like the red-headed stepchild of the sequencer/sampler standalone market and having some obnoxious and glaring flaws, I really think it is the best offer out there, and will hopefully improve in further updates. The version "3.0.6" means it is only version 0.6 of the software, the 3 denotes the Force, 1 and 2 are the MPC Live and X, so maybe once a new update comes out, I think a lot of people would love to hear your thoughts on it.
Can you select if the individual track audio gets recorded pre or post EQ? I imagine it would be cool to jam with this and apply radical EQ while you do so, but record everything separately and unprocessed, and later import the files onto the computer for editing and mixing in a DAW.
While the compact nature of this mixer, is attractive for desktop/portable use. If you already have an iPad, then the Behringer XR18, could be a more powerful/flexible alternative, for close to the same price. It has more inputs/outputs (all 1/4" and XLR with phantom power ), better effects, including full dynamics, EQ, etc, on each channel, and can be used in more situations, for a full band, with microphones. Even though I already have an XR18 in my main studio, I would like to have this compact all in one mixer, in my synth cave. Thanks again for this product review.
I've got the Blackbox and I really love it. Try as I might, I just can't get as excited about the Bluebox. It's such a shame it's not an audio interface, but also no compression per channel is a buzz kill also 😑
I have confidence the compressor/limiter per channel could come in future firmware. USB audio/midi class compliant interface on the device port would make it killer though. Looks like it's possible, though hard, to do it through firmware.
Different beasts. If you have a mixer, the Blackbox fills a bunch of other holes (e.g. stem player, MIDI sequencer, sample slicer/basic groovebox, granulator) I turned my back on the Blackbox for a few months (for other toys)... and then realized they'd added a ton of features and suddenly it's a cornerstone of my live rig.

arent those minijack cables not usually not well insulated and microphonic also? anytime you touch the cable you will hear it and probably end up recording a bunch of noise
You can send each track to either CUE or OUT2 in addition to the master and then select in MAIN after pressing the B button wether you want CUE or OUT2 to be pre or post fader. I think that way you should be able to record both a dry and a wet version at the same time. No firmware update needed 😉
@@sonicstate You can select the amount of FX1 and FX2 in each track and also set CUE and OUT2 to FX pre-fade or post-fade. I got my Bluebox today and so far, it could do everything I threw at it (ran into some ground loop issues with my Focusrite Scarlett though that weren't so obvious when I ran everything from my computer).
@@sonicstate thanks- I've got several smaller (metal) ipad stands from amazon that I use for blackbox, blofeld, deluge... they're even tough enough to take a creamware minimax & hold it at a good angle. the dimensions of the polyend make them unsuitable for it, though, so this ikea one looks ideal.

I think it's all a conspiracy between cable mfrs and gear vendors. cables are super high profit margin and it seems we have to buy a new set of adapters and cables every 6 months. Bit cheap they haven't bothered to include the necessary connections for their own device. I know its a small business, but if you're going to go against the grain you need to have these things supplied.
So seems like it records but it doesn't loop. I want a mixer that has loopers connected to every track. Why doesn't anyone make that product, it would sell like hot cakes?
an 8 track mixer with a dedicated looper per track would be vastly more powerful than taking the stereo output of your 8 track mixer and going stereo into any loop pedal, even the rc-505.

Anyone else perturbed by the bit of dirt that started the video above the FX button and then got wedged down the side of the button before popping out again?? 😬
I think it's all a conspiracy between cable mfrs and gear vendors. cables are super high profit margin and it seems we have to buy a new set of adapters and cables every 6 months. I'm beginning to hate anything USB, including the noise, the search for the micro connector that fits this week's iteration, and the weak powered 5v crap that cant power a midi splitter... and now more of these fragile mini jacks. make sure you have your black uno midi adapters, which are not the same as the freak's white midi adapters, so you need those too....yeehaw.
Bit cheap they haven't bothered to include the necessary connections for their own device. I know its a small business, but if you're going to go against the grain you need to have these things supplied.
Too many compromises for size, no thanks.
Chin up kid 👍
The spacing between connections is absurd
Nice but £200 too expensive for what it is.
525€ actually
Indeed it’s extremely expensive

So seems like it records but it doesn't loop. I want a mixer that has loopers connected to every track. Why doesn't anyone make that product, it would sell like hot cakes?
Isn't that the what the black box is good for?
just with the RC-505 for that
There are literally a thousand loopers out there
an 8 track mixer with a dedicated looper per track would be vastly more powerful than taking the stereo output of your 8 track mixer and going stereo into any loop pedal, even the rc-505.
@@SUPAMURDA Octatrack?
No phantom power for condenser mics..😏
No real ability to plug in a mic tbh designed for line level inputs
As an OCD freak, that bit of grime that hovered over the FX button, then went away, then came back again was enough for me to quit watching, sorry. Love your vids; but can't get past that; as it's like watching a train accident. Can't see or hear anything else.
I hope you're able to overcome your issue. Best of luck
