  • The traditional Boxing Day hunt was met with protests from anti-hunt activists outside Tiverton Pannier Market on Tuesday (December 26)
Hundreds of people gathered to watch as the Tiverton Foxhounds led the hounds and horses through the town centre.
Anti-hunt protesters have been meeting in Tiverton for four years, led by political group LIFT (Local Independents For Tiverton). Andy Perris, who leads the group said: “We’ve got more people turning up, we’ve got CCTV to record the transgressions of the hunt, and the police have turned up for the first time, which is interesting. That’s possibly because they have been getting away with this for years, and we’ve made a lot of noise this year.
“There are a number of inconsistencies with what’s been happening with Mid Devon Council; we applied for a road closure to do a community event, and strangely enough we haven’t heard anything.”
Perris added: “A lot of people have just accepted that the hunt turn up without thinking about what this is about. We know trail hunting is killing animals and has been since the Hunting Act came into force.
“The Hunting Act has many holes in it and they’re exploiting them. Evidence of polling by the League Against Cruel Sports suggests that more than 70 per cent of people do not support hunting and we’re here to express that opinion.”
Sarah Little from Action Against Fox Hunting (AAFH) said: “We want to highlight the rules and regulations that the hunt should follow to put on an event. They should have event management plans, risk assessments. They have been pushed into a safety advisory group meeting, largely because of the action by AAFH who has written to relevant councils. It was advised they got a TTRO (Temporary Traffic Regulation Order) to close the roads that they would be going through had the roads not been closed due to fallen masonry, but they didn’t bother to apply for it, which means it was their intention to come into town, ride the wrong way along a one-way street and go through what is essentially a footway, and all of this they do not need permissions for. All of this has health and safety risks around the dogs, horses, with forty dogs and up to 25 horses brought into an enclosed public space and we want to know if that’s a safe and legal event to do.”
Kelvin Thomas from the Tiverton Foxhounds spoke to the crowds saying: “It’s really lovely to see you all here today. It’s important that we come in and see you all. I don’t know where these banners have come from, we haven’t seen them before.
“Thanks for your support, and I believe you have been singing carols, so thank you very much. The Tiverton hounds have been registered as a pack since 1841, that’s 182 years, so we’re planning to try and keep that going. With that in mind, we’ll see you here next year.”
Referring to the anti-hunt protesters, he said: “If you see anyone running around in the street, gift wrap it and give it to somebody else.”

The lady i spoke to said, dont you watch the news? We continued, but they offered defensiveness and no evidence. I left the conversation none the wiser. The spectacle was impressive and ive not read that anyone witnessed any animals being harmed yesterday by this hunt? So, was this hunt meet illegal?
