- M&S Schmalberg is the last factory handcrafting custom fabric flowers in New York’s historic garment district. The family business has designed flowers for celebrities and designers since 1916. But competition from overseas flower manufacturers has made it difficult to stay afloat.

How The Last Artificial Flower Factory In NYC Handcrafts Designs For Celebrities | Still Standing
I've ordered from them before on Etsy! They took hours to sift through their flowers to find the smallest ones that I could use. So accommodating for even a small order. Amazing quality, I wear the flowers in my hair every day and they have held up wonderfully!
Thank you :)
What’s the Etsy shop name?

The man who brought in his late wife's wedding dress to turn it into flowers... Mad respect.
Really? I would be pissed. It’s fine to move on, but don’t bring me into the relationship with your new wife. It’s gross.
Edit: I guess a lot of people disagree with me, but some of that disagreement is getting a bit personal so…I’m doubling down 😘
More than any grand gestures or emotions, relationships hinge on mutual respect and good boundaries. I think this supposedly romantic gesture scores poorly in both those categories. Everyone makes bad decisions, so that doesn’t make them terrible people, just regular ones. That said, I think this is a bad thing that will come back to bite them-forget romantic! As for the people saying I shouldn’t judge them…take your own advice!
Edit 2: “If the two people say it’s okay, then it’s fine and you should keep your nose out of it” is not true. It is an excuse.
It’s a catch-22 flavor of irony that by advising me to mind my own business you are not taking your own advice. For best results, “like” comments of people who already insulted and disagreed with me.
@@arianamiidolls
I think they’re saying that if she was the dead wife she’d be pissed because he’s making her a part regardless of her intentions which are unknown.
@@arianamiidolls I know. If I was the wife who died I would think it was weird and gross. I understand the intent, but I don’t think it would be honoring me to involve my memory in your commitment to your new wife-much less by cutting up my dress! Be good to your new wife and don’t bring me into it; that’s just trying to assuage your own guilt. It isn’t better to muddy the waters of your new relationship with my memory. You’re not going to wear our wedding ring. You’re not going to sleep in our bed. You wanted a new relationship so have your new relationship. Keep a few things in a box and donate the rest.
@@henrylivingstone2971 Yup. Isn’t it enough that I’ll bless him moving on without him using my stuff for the new girl he’s sleeping with? It isn’t respectful to her either. This is her day. Don’t roll my name out; I’m dead!
Shouldn’t take it too seriously but I couldn’t help agreeing that the thought behind the gesture may not have been thorough enough.
I recall Bernadette Banner (UA-camr) doing a small documentary style video on this company over a year ago. It was so enlightening and how this company had such a rich story of Victorian fashion with flowers. It’s good to see they are still at it.
fr!!!!! as soon as I saw this video I was like 'they robbed this from her lol'
Thank you, couldn’t quite recall why I was familiar with them.
@@wormking9506 Funny that was my first thought too lol kinda silly though. Can't help it, BB is the best.
Came here for this comment!
Saw this also, since then now have over a dozen of their lovely pieces.
There used to be an atelier in Paris from the 1700s that was making flowers and doing beautiful plume work for designers and haute couture houses. It just closed during the Pandemic so I hope this exposure helps this workshop to continue on and keep these techniques and savoir faire alive. ❤
Omg which one??
@@rodystudent Legeron! They sold to Chanel/Paraffection who ironically was outsourcing the flowers for their bags to China instead of paying Legeron properly. Super sad.
this is sad to hear :(
@@leahvanloon8217 dont buy chinese ...period!
@@leahvanloon8217 That's scandalous! I thought Chanel was supposed to keep these artisans going.
I love the fact what there are so many older workers there :v Working for decades in one company nowadays when there's such huge turnover is just... abstract. I wish this factory all the best, may they stay in business.
It's because 8 Billion people has resulted in expendable workers. You don't want to do it? Someone else will for half your salary. 80 People left my workplace last year. 40 From my department alone (We are only 11 now). Fire the managers? Pfft no they are "fantastic". Just add 1 more name to the interview list. So broken.
@@ReclusiveEagle Thank you for sharing it and jesus, these numbers look terrible :c What I noticed is also that sometimes people do not mind working in certain place with certain colleagues, but either they are fired or have to leave anyway, because inflation goes up and new job = higher salary. There's no stability anymore.
@@ReclusiveEagle do you work where I work like damn. Same numbers and everything.
@@ReclusiveEagle it’s not the 8 billion people, it’s the greed of a few. There’s a record number of vacant homes, 16 million in the US last time I checked. 40% of all food we produce is thrown out.
So many people I know wish they could just do something they are proud of, that feels tangible. But learning trades like this would never support them financially enough to survive because of skyrocketing rent and food prices. If people can’t do this type of work and survive, this type of work will die. And they can’t survive because people artificially inflate food and shelter for greed.
There were times where houses and land were given away for free to stimulate the economy in certain areas. I say we start fixing the problem by not letting vultures buy up 100’s of homes that could be used by working families.
Well it’s clear unlike other companies this company actually cares about their employees! It’s absurd to me that people think that employees should just suck it up and deal with being treated horribly like they aren’t a human being them self because of how little they get paid. I didn’t realize that your rank or job title Meant a certain amount of respect that you deserve as a human being.
I’m a flower farmer and this story moved me to tears. Whether you grow real or artificial, flowers capture the eye and delight the heart. Your bring true artistry into the world with your craft. Cheers 🥂 from one farmer to another. I wish you another 100 years of continued success.
That's awesome!! THESE are the kind of stories we need to see more of.
I also work for a family owned business that's been around since 1870. Gates Flag & Banner. We're not a manufacturer, but we're going through the same kind of struggles, namely finding people who are interested in this business and industry. I'm the youngest one in the office by about 20 years. Everyone is bound to retire eventually. It's really sad...
100% agree! If you like to see more about this company, the dress Historian and dressmaker Bernadette Banner made a little documentary about this company.
It's here on UA-cam :)
What do you do?
@@lady_sir_knight3713 I'm a graphic designer mostly. I deal with almost all the custom orders we get, which is a lot. We do custom flags, light pole banners, table drapes, feather flags, rugs, retractable banners... a lot lol. And for big companies, too! Pepsico, BMW, Rutgers, almost all the towns and colleges in north Jersey area and beyond
But, in addition to graphic design, I'm also a sales rep, and am the only guy who manages the social media pages and email marketing. Monthly newsletter, half-staff alerts, etc.

When I started out on Etsy, I created and sold hand made flowers. I loved it. You have my thorough respect and admiration. Imports from Chinese factories allowed on the site killed my shop and I had to switch to something else. I wish you great and continued success with your business and it makes me smile to know you're still out there.
@@parrotcracker6629 💯%. it's really upsetting on sites like Etsy which are supposed to be the alternative to that unethical bull.

Welp. Sounds like we need a new etsy that will kick cheap manufactured crap off the site instead of allowing it for a couple more bucks.
What did you make them out of? I used to make flowers using ribbons and a lighter
If only I lived closer to the city. THIS is the kind of hands-on, creative job I would love to do. There are so many opportunities to make wonderful things with their flowers.
For real. When he said he had a hard time finding people interested I was shocked. Would take this over retail any day of the year.

Do you honestly think they'd be able to pay you enough to live in the area and survive?
@@kumada84 Sad but true.
What a terrific piece, kudos to the writers. I visited M&S a couple of times while at Parsons but had no idea how far back the company’s history went. Such a fascinating story and how lovely to have created an environment where their craftspeople commit 40+ years of their lives. I wish them continued history and success. 👏

Flowers made from the wedding dress is such a great idea. That was beautiful that he wanted to pay tribute to his late wife. Watching these episodes makes me wish I could support more craftspeople like this.
What an inspirational business family. Always admired people who help out their children. My grandpa was a business man and helped my father get his business. I strive to become successful enough to offer my children the same opportunity some day when I have some kids of my own. That's how you pass on tradition and make sure that your children don't have to suffer as much as you did.
It’s good to know that there’s a wide variety of fabrics that artificial flowers can be crafted from! I remember buying a red silk rose back in the mid nineteen-seventies. Almost everything was polyester by then. I would love “real” artificial flowers that are handmade!

I love that there's still a craftsperson of just about everything, somewhere within the country. Making flowers from the wedding dress of a loved wife, passed too soon- things like that are important for history.
The floral, fashion, and jewelry districts in midtown are disappearing due to gentrification and rising rents. For designers like me, finding these manufacturers are life changing and heartbreaking at the same time.
It's encouraging as a fresh floral artist to see the artisanal craft of artificial still alive and thriving today! Hopefully your story will inspire people looking for artificial flowers to buy locally.
I’d love to turn my wedding dress into flowers that my daughter can carry when she gets married. Will 100% call them about this.
A friend whose family owns a multi generational small business, Hallagan Furniture, sent this to me. My daughter and son-in-law met there and I can picture them as I watched the talented employees working at their craft. I discovered this year a love for making flowers so this video was wonderful to me for several reasons. I’m happy to see this business with such a rich history continue to thrive.
the history behind this family business is so heartwarming and full of resilience. i hope this exposure brings more interest to them and that their business stays open for decades to come!!
I'm so glad to see a small family business survive all these years. My parents had a small family business last 50 years. There is something about the dedication, hard work and love that ultimately goes into it. Sending prayers for your continued success.🙏❤️
This is wonderful to see family owned business find ways to survive and not give up.
Adam’s soul is special, he’s a big part of fashion with his little / big details of flowers, happy to look at fabric flowers on clothing, its from Adam. I’m happy he’s keeping his families history in fashion going, I wanna do that too. I hope they blossom into a big fashion house.
Wow, omg his daughter is so cute. This is passion, to have employees for so many years means he takes care of them. Wish the business many more generations to come
I first heard about M&S from Bernadette Banner when she did a story about them a while back. I immediately went onto their website and purchased some of their gorgeous works of art. Everyone should go and buy one flower to help keep them in business! ❤️🌷
I made children’s couture gowns and plan on using their products for embellishments
Some of them are there for 40 years! Wow.These type of passionate skilled workers are rare to find. Also it's a victory of the owner who made them feel coming back to work even after retirement ! 👍👍👍❤️❤️❤️
If only I was close to this, I’d love to learn the craft. It seems like such a beautiful and peaceful place to work.
Agreed!
The story is fabulous! It’s entirely an art form and your workers are all artists. I love watching the entire process from die cutting to pressing to creating each flower. The dies are so special. An art I hope doesn’t get lost. ❤
I really enjoyed the story behind this family own business. It’s fascinating to me how they where able to out live there competition years down the line. This goes to show that the culture and story behind the brand is just as important as the product itself. Also, what I took away from this story of this business is to always believe that there is a way! His Grandfather was able to over come adversity by keeping up with trends and believing in his product and I’m pretty sure great customer service. I’m currently a new young business owner with a commercial cleaning company and I’m literally in the process of figuring out what I want the Culture and story of my business to be based around in a way that will speak to everyone in one way or another. Which is why I appreciate this video that has randomly been suggested to me😌
I love these types of videos. I also love seeing family businesses passed down. This fabric factory is making some gorgeous flowers.
Just went to shop here on my trip to NYC. Can confirm: the shop is fascinating, Adam and his staff are lovely, and the flowers are incredibly beautiful! Buy all the flowers from them!
I’ve been here to tour the factory, it’s amazing what they do!! I hope they never close, this is why couture matters, people complain about high fashion but that’s one of the few clients left keeping this factory open
One of my great aunties hand made paper blooms for weddings and funerals. There weren't any flowers available during winters here back then, so she and her family made them. It was a very creative way for her to have a home based business.
This video was so beautiful. I'm in love with all fiber crafts, fiber spinning, lace making, and many more. I've never heard of this craft before. I've never liked fake flowers from cheap countries. They feel so ... Yuck. But you can see the love that each person has...it's not just a job.
This is a priceless shop. These people have taken care of a priceless part of history while making new. THANK YOU.

Fantastic story and wonderful to hear about a home grown business surviving and selling to the people in their own country. Too many of the things we buy these days are made elsewhere e.g. China. If I were 30 years younger I would take that job in a heartbeat! I'd start sweeping the floors and work my way up, just to learn this amazing craft and be in that environment.
Are you 100? All the people I’ve seen working are old af. As a factory worker we were responsible for sweeping our own area. It’s a way for companies to cut down on labor. This place doesn’t seem like they hire many people, or pay that much. Not one person looks to be under 50. The reason being, they probably don’t pay a livable wage and only old ladies who are retired can make it. Or migrant workers who get government assistance. Prove me wrong. I’d love to see a young person making a living working here.
I love everything about this shop. Faith, love, gratitude, service- it's all there. God bless them 🌺
