- What's up everyone:) I hope everyone is having a fantastic day. For those of you who don't know me, my name is Sacha C and I'm a full-time UX Designer and part-time grad student living in Chicago IL. I make videos about my life, fashion, and design.
This video is a bit different for me as I haven't shared my professional life on UA-cam. Well, today that changed! In this video, I walk you through what exactly a Human-Computer Interaction degree is and if it's worth it. As with everything, this is my opinion and others may have different opinions. I hope you guys can get a solid understanding of what HCI is and if it's right for you. This is also coming from a UX Designers point of view, so some of my input about what HCI is is coming from a UX approach.

Great video thank you! I'm a Frontend developer so I'm excited to start this Masters degree.
This is a good video, please describe the classes and textbooks a little more in detailed so that we can get a sense of how the class and study looks like.
Great video, more HCI topic plsssss
thanks for making this video, really considering switching my major and wanted to find a real person talking about this. not someone just pushing a bootcamp or course.
Thank you so much, Im a recent graduate(like 2 weeks ago) also in the chicago looking for direction.
That’s awesome! Would love to chat!
this is insanely helpful
I’m starting my masters in two months, i have a bachelor in computer science and psychology but I don’t have experience in the field. I’m kinda afraid I’m going to finish my masters and won’t find jobs
Me too as well got the same situation majoring in computer science and got the research field on HCI, it's my first time to get into this field. Need any direction please what should I do first as a master student in this field?
Hey guys so how is it going?
Im about to graduate with a psychology degree and only recently realize that I want to break into UIUX field and is thinking of getting a master in HCI. Since everything is quite new to me, I think getting into HCI master and also simultaneously taking extra uiux courses outside will prob help to prepare me more. what do you think?
When you say "a basic understanding of how a computer works", what exactly do you mean lol? I am very familiar with using computers/software, but I know nothing about coding and very little about hardware. I want to learn more though.
OK, now that you're probably done with your masters - I have questions!
I have a BFA from 2005. I've been working as a developer since 2011. I have been in roles like Designer/developer, product designer, ux designer, ui designer and all combinations. I've been teaching full-stack dev and product design for the last 4 years independently. Sometimes I think about getting a masters degree (for fun) (for that little boost on the "does this guy know what he's doing" scale and resume etc). But I've read a bunch of HCI books and it seems like I've learned all of these things already via UX and just "figuring things out" while on the job. I'm happy with my work contracting and teaching, but I'm also interested in working for a larger company to work on bigger problems (like Apple or something). Do you think someone like me (42/experienced) would get value out of an HCI masters? I really don't want to just do it for the sake of the degree - but also, maybe that in itself is worth it and opens new opportunities? What's your view? Also, how important do you think the school reputation is? Thanks.
is there future in HCI and ux? I am willing to pursue masters in HCI but have been reading lot of reddit posts and most of them are saying its either saturated of pretty hard to get in cuz creativity is dead now. Whats ur opinion and take on this? Also any suggestions for me? Thank you!
is it better to do HCI or UX Design masters?
I have a bachelor's degree in visual communication and I want to know if this background would be useful for HCI? can I apply for a master's in HCI ? I have no coding experience
Following
What did you get your bachelors degree in?
Does IU and UX involve programing the actual apps/websites or just designing them for the best user experience/visual appearance?
Bro im actually getting my PH.D in Cognitive Psychology but focsusing on HCI-D. I would love to collab with you.
Of course I would love too. Feel free to message!
Hi I got admit into DePaul University is the hci program good there
did u find out how good it is? I want to apply too
Thx 4 the info!
Great video but just a correction. A product designer in most rudimentary definition is someone who handles design direction of a product end to end. A cross functional role that is a little bit of research, LOTS of UX and have the functional capacity to carry out the visuals too.
Product designer is often described as a generalist super set of ux design.
Thanks for the info! Always learning :)
Hey Sacha I really enjoy your videos. I’m a student in uni right now and wanted to ask you something. My major that I plan on attaining is a bachelors in cognitive science and my question for you is that “is that a good major” to get into the Ux/UI field 😁
How is being a UX designer for you? Is it always stressful? Obviously I’m sure every big job is but I mean are there moments where things don’t work for you and it costs your clients business or worse your own job? That’s the big concern I have with pursuing UX right now but it seems like the job most feasible and enjoyable for me.
Sorry for the late reply, but I would say the work is very on and off. It get SUPER intense sometimes and other times it's super chill. We do so many different things so everyday is different really.
Hi, my name is Michael which is from mainland China. I've already finished a master's degree in the University of Sheffield (UK) in the field of Mechanical Engineering. Is it worth me the money if I willing to apply the major : 'Interaction Design' in Sydney (UTS)? The name is different from HCI but it's more similar. I've already seen the course description and I'm starting to descover that probably it contains too much subjects and interdisciplinary courses. So I'm wondering how could I be able to get hired afterwards? What could be a position for both Mechanical Engineering and Interaction design could doing? Designning the VR products? Product manager? How can I compete with those who majored in Computer Science... Also as an international student, should I consider to focus more on practical majors like Robotics again? But I don't so much into the Robotics as much as the design. And it's also will be difficult for a mechanical student to study robotics code from scratch. Could I get some advices? Thank you !
Hey Michael, I'm thinking to get into the same university for Interaction design, and as you could have done quite a lot of research by now. Could we please connect?
I am studying Bcom computers and I want to do masters in HCI (UI UX) in Abroad... Is this possible!
Yes! Many of my class mates study abroad!
@@sachac Can u give me ur friends mails to contact them please...!
Love the video bro I wanted to ask can HCI work in IT ?
Any affordable University in Australia to Do Msc in HCI or UI/ UX related Msc Subject? Any video on this topic?
whats the chillest focus work wise
is it worth it doing a Phd in Hci?
Hello im a from india , can you guide me on how to get admission in those universities and what a process is
Thank you so much, helped a-lot. Also can you mention a few good universities that have HCI
For sure! A lot of places don't specifically have HCi degrees but they have information science degrees where you can focus on HCI. I recommend Cornell, University of Washington, Carnegie Mellon, MIT, and of course DePaul haha
@@sachac Thanks.!
Hi, I know my comment is like two months late but I start my University in the summer and I want to major in UX and UI design. I know that there is a lot of degrees relating towards UXUI design. I chose my main major to be graphic design is that still helpful into becoming a UX and UI designer?
Yes, that's where I started!
