Im a native Irish speaker and have taught it at secondary (high school) level. Have to say well done on the pronunciations, Irish names (especially middle Irish) can be really tricky to pronounce but you did a great job!
Brian was awesome he is my 37th grandfather and was highly spoken of in my family when it comes to storys told to me by my grandmother . super cool stuff for sure
As an Australian I'm interested to know of my irish history, which goes back to the beginning of my beautiful country to being a penal colony, predominantly of Irish. My ancestors are the Galahers and Peoples.
Love these niche history videos on things I've absolutely never heard of before. It's refreshing compared to a lot of other history channels that just talk about the same things everyone has already heard about.
I'm currently reading Lion of Ireland (you showed a picture of the cover around 9:30) and even though only halfway through the book, Brian is so, so fascinating.

@@HistoryUnhingedPodThat's all true. But I think most would like to see the author introduce the video, and then show film or animations of the areas and people named. Handy History uses animations and portraits which makes it much more visually appealing and knowing what the people named looked like makes it all more personal and real. I really think these changes would sustain viewership better than anything else.
This channel needs so muchore attention from history buffs like me! I'm a retired architectural restoration specialist thats worked on old statues, rock walls etc. and i adore old history now that i just work on my ancient self! 😂😂😂
Great interesting video! Would love to see medieval German content, King Ludwig (who also had a mysterious death) although honestly I’ve found all your content interesting. I enjoy longer content 30 min plus ❤
I finally decided to check this out. I know I'm late to the game, but I really find your history segments on TLL exceedingly interesting. I had never heard of Brian Boru prior to this video. I really love your segments on Native American history, so more of that is always welcome to me. But, really, there's so much history I'm unaware of. I wish my professors/teachers had presented history in the same way you do, made it more about what happened and why that was significant than about memorizing that an event occurred in 763 (or whatever date), then something else happened in 842, with no indication of why I should care. Thank you for igniting an interest in history in me.
I love the history segments in the Lore Lodge videos so I finally came over to this side. I hope you keep adding stuff to this channel. I’d love to see more pre-Colombian to modern history on the peoples of the Americas going region by region. It’s a lot and you’d have enough content for years and I would be more than happy to gobble all that info up. That’s my two cents.
Brian Boru was from County Clare... I like that the voice over is a clip of Pine Island in Connemara (County Galway) 😂 And why Irish uses weird combinations of letters? Irish orthography is derived from the Latin alphabet which was used in Irish and while writing Gaelic script. For an English speaker, the Irish alphabet can look the same as the Latin alphabet but is pronounced differently. There are 18 letters in the traditional Irish alphabet: “a b c d e f g h i l m n o p r s t u”. A great video! I really enjoy your channel!
Idk how I got here. I was wondering on a spoopy channel called Lore Lodge when I was teleported here where the guy's some historian instead. WENDIGUSSY HELP ME
You should do one on Sigurd Eysteinsson who treacherously brought 80 men riding on 40 horses to a 40 on 40 agreed upon battle with Máel Brigte the Bucktoothed. In victory he attached Máel Brigte's severed head to his saddle bag and while traveling home the bucktooth got it's revenge and cut Sigurd on the leg causing an infection which killed him.
I just posted link to Twitter, I’m going to spend a couple bucks and try to boost the tweet so more people can see it. I’ll watch the vid when I get off work. Big fan, hope you guys keep killing it and god bless!
I am a direct descendent of Brian Boru's older brother Mathghamain (I think that's how it's spelled, I'm probably wrong lol), descended from the Del Cais from the North, later settling in County Cork. Myself, I'm of Australian descent, after having an ancestor sent here in the 1840's for "machine breaking". My family name is Toomer.
I love history and medieval history is one of my favourite times. Thanks for starting this channel. Also, when I saw “Life of Brian” I thought it was Monty Python for a moment there 😅
Very complicated history to understand....a movie was made for Napoleon which lasted 3 hours, but hero's like brian boru and the after mentioned french general are so complex, genius, revolutionary, intellectual and just down right brilliant that we could never show everything, ever decision, every reason and especially with Brian ,every truth.........but if ever someone has the balls to even try,I will be the first to try to help and the first at the cinema...........and he is only the tip of the iceberg 😊😊
I did one of my capstone projects on the battle of Clontarf. The annals frequently refer to the Norse as “dark foreigners” even after they had assimilated into Irish society by 1014. Super fascinating.
A "dark" foreigner was usually a Dane and a "fair" foreigner was Norwegian, if I recall correctly. I think it was because the Danes raided and the Norge traded
11:56 I believe that's the Cathedral in Galway city, which used to be the location of a prison, but was knocked down and built into the building you see there. There's a stone slab in the car park just beside it which is for those hanged there. It's by far the most impressive building in the city.
😊thanks, very good information. 😮my relative was at Brian’s side when he died. I’m sure they were thanking God and praying, but they may have had a nip or two 😮😊 Quinn
Buzzing for more history content from you guys, any chance of some Scottish history around the Picts by any chance? 👀 Always been keen to learn more about my homeland, we really only learned about WWI & II in my school (which was interesting) but would have loved some more ancient/medieval stuff too. Keep up the great work!
Aiden! I've skinwalked my way from a Lore Lodge with my fellow John H ᏣᏂ and have loved watching your channel grow both for your specific content and WBP. Love your sincerity and thoroughness of research and look forward to seeing you grow even more!
Briaín Borúmhe was not the first "High King" of Ireland. There were earlier high kings. He was the first high king to be annointed "Emperor of All the Gaels of Ireland".
Glory for the gourd!! Really happy you started this channel. I can't remember if you game or your opinion on gaming but I would recommend one game for you. Crusader Kings 3. Game starts between 856-1000. You basically try to make a dynasty. If I remember right you can play as the person you cover in the video.
As an irish woman, I still to this day look at some irish names and I swear that the person who made these names were just like 'yea we'll put that letter there and put that one there and there we have it, a beautiful name that is going to piss off all of our descendants and everyone else in the world, good luck'
So so you wanna talk to me...must be a tricky task a quest of epic proportions to get that arranged since our offices are so distant in London. Walking distance 3 minutes? How did I pass by there last year? A couple of dozen times? I hope the coffee is better than in May at BoE.
its interesting to note if you know anyone with the surname o'brien or any other spelling of that name they are the descendent's of Brian boru. which is the literal meaning of the name. While Brian wasnt the only high king of Ireland he was arguably the only high king to unite or rule over the entire country.
1:24 it's because it is a non-latin language written with a roman script but it is only roman shapes not necessarily roman sounds. Give them their own script babes, make a conlangscript (bc conscript is already a word), even if it is based on roman characters. Change em up a bit, make it look as different to roman as greek & cyrillic Can't wait for more of this. I like history but it isn't one of my things & I don't know a lot of it. Excited for more. btw do you have a PO box? I just got a book & I want to see if I can send it to you. ps smokey holes I just figured out by reading "ard ri" that roi like king is the same place the word royal comes from how did I not know this
You have done great. Really. Have you read the ancient texts? if we read the ancient texts, that are so hard to understand. We get a better world view at that time.
I would love to see a major studio produce a movie on the life of Brian Boru - its such a shame that we still do not have one yet...

Thank you for this lesson. My last name is Hogan and during my research I found out that I am related to Brian. Such an honor💚Fight til the end
I’m living just 5 mins from the battle of Bealick where Brian became king of Munster. Very special area.
From an irish man who prides brian boru I thank you for this video sir.

As it's been 4 months since this debut episode without a second, I'd like to see ...a second
It’s coming, we didn’t expect the main channel to take off quite as much as it has but we’re gonna be releasing more here soon

I have a request. After you cover king Arthur, you should cover William Martial the perfect knight
This would make an great series on Netflix. Its like a real life GOT
I have actually learned from my mother that we are descendants of Brian Boru. So this is really cool to watch this and learn about him more.
Congrats, for all you know you could be a long forgotten rightful Heir
My Grandmother told us the same. Interesting to hear about him.
so am i, that means we’re related :)
