I swear one can tell, from their 7 films together, von Sternberg loved Dietrich... just the way he uses light/ shadow on her face... yes, it is public knowledge they were lovers, but to actually see it captured on film is quite remarkable. I might read too much into it, of course, but I can also sense the difference in films Dietrich made with other directors... take all the westerns for example...Destry was really good, but there was no magic to Dietrich's character, no 'loving' light... or 'Stage fright' - she was glam as ever, but a sort of petty, 'plain' glam, rather than the tragic, 'out of this world' glamour she had achieved with Sternberg...
