@@SundayAshiedu Unity is for those who identify as Nigerians. The idea of Biafra, as clung to by many, may never materialize. It's important to note that I have lost relatives from both my parents' sides, who are from the western and eastern regions of the country during the civil war. The Igbo people are diverse and not a single entity; a separation now could lead to further divisions into smaller groups. It's crucial to consider this perspective. I share Igbo heritage, so this is not a baseless argument. Your hatred for other Nigerians outside of your tribal enslavement is not the solution to Nigeria's problems. 99% of the world today has numerous ethnic groups forming their countries. Most of the successful Igbos achieved success in other parts of the nation. Stop fanning the flames of disunity as it will get you nowhere.

And, let those who does not identify themselves as Nigerians that wants to leave leave for peace to reign. Yorubas and Igbos will always fight even in overseas where in the area we stay together there's always friction. It's time Nigerians know that what happened in the past is gone forever. Let's now focus on the future to educate our children and have a better standard of living. We must learn the lessons from the mistakes of our forefathers and repeat them. Sadly, you are learning the wrong "history". You are learning that a cowardly, deranged thug who distinguished himself by killing unarmed civilians was a dreaded hero. But you are not learning that for the first time in the history of war, USSR, UK, Arab League etc. were united in fighting a small emerging African state which was blockaded by air, land and sea and pulverized with Mig 17s provided by USSR and flown by Egyptian pilots to destroy cities with no air defences. He is a hero in the West but a tyrant in the East . This is one of the reason why the unification of this country is very difficult because different regions has their different heros that they celebrate .
when ojukwu killed Col Banjo who was leading biafra army, the east hailed the action when the igbo soldiers killed all the leaders of other regions and left the igbo politicians, it was smart and good according to igbos when aguiyi ironsi refused to probe the igbo coup plotters, igbo hailed it when nnamid azikwe and balewa arrested awolowo and imprisoned him, that was wisdom according to igbos. when Brigadier Wellington Duke Bassey, the man who commanded nigerian army parade and the seniormost military officer at independence was fraudulently demoted and his junior( aguyi ironsi, who he personally trained and was commissioned 3 years under him ), was elevated above him , that was hailed by igbos. When aguiyi ironsi sacked the yoruba man who was the senior most judge of the country and a junior igbo man was unilaterally promoted, and despite the clamour of the all other ethnic groups on nigeria then, aguiyi Ironsi claimed it was a decision of government. He was a great man loved by Nigerians & others who knew him. But what did the one Nigeria he loved so much & fought for do for him? Benjamin Adekunle is a perfect example of a criminal opportunist gang from a certain predictable region who love to hide behind other tribes to feign bravery but would never initiate any fight of their own. Never! Most of the people who gloat about Biafran war exploits and their bravery are from this region only. You will never hear any Hausa of Fulani person gloating about Biafran war even though they and Ibos were the main protagonists and Yorubas were just a footnote in the whole story. The same thing happened during the Ogoni confrontation with the Nigerian army which eventually led to the hanging of Saro-Wiwa. At that time, a certain Paul Okuntimo emerged from nowhere just like Benjamine Adekule threatening fire and brimstone. Like Adekunle, he was canonised by Yorubas in the now defunct Lagos-Ibadan press as he boasted that he and his soldiers would lay ambush on Ogoni villages at dusk waiting for the people to wake up at down and face a barrage of bullets from his army! Thankfully, the emergence of social media has provided the opportunity to counter their false narratives which would have gone largely unanswered in the days of the print media.

More like pulling another into your gutter to win them cheaply. Black Scorpion and the 3rd Marine Commandos had no business with Asaba. Even for an illiterate, merely hearing the word MARINES, common-sense should suggest to you that Adekunle operated more in the riverine fronts of the war which includes Akwa Ibom. If you understand the Geography you will know that Asaba is on the Westend of Biafra, whilst Akwaibom is on the extreme East. Same as Lagos and Maiduguri. There is no meeting point between the two. The contention here was Adekunle's highhanded activities in Uyo, Akwa ibom, which was a major part of Biafra throughout the war period. You threw in Asaba like an educated illiterate just to disprove the point raised by @eduokuwah5328. Meanwhile emphasizing that Akwa Ibom is not part of the SE only buttresses my position that you have no clues and lack adequate education on this particular subject. There was nothing like SS and SE then. The Nigerian British govt of Gowon created states ONLY to thwart the Biafran idea, including your SW states. Akwa Ibom of today was part and parcel of Biafra during the war. Same as Ogun or Oyo of today were part of the Western region before they became individual states. The origin of the state creation you see in Nigeria today started from the attempt to neutralize Biafra via creating these divisions to cut away the oil reserves from Ojukwu's strangle hold. To keep the balance and make it look sincere, they had to create states too in other regions. What you had was just one big Western region, same as we had one big Eastern region which became Biafra. Moreover, Ojukwu's second in command General Philip Effiong who oversaw the surrender terms, is from the Akwa Ibom area. Stop arguing about something you are clueless about. You write eloquently but have no clues about the Biafran region during the war.

First of all, I never said anything about Biafra. Why bringing Biafra into this! You nailed the point that unity of Nigeria is for those who identifies themselves as Nigerians. This is the perfect reason why you and those who identifies as Nigerians should keep their Nigeria and enjoy it. And, let those who does not identify themselves as Nigerians that wants to leave leave for peace to reign. Why would anyone in their right mind would want to live with someone that does not want to live with them. Coexistence is not by force anywhere in the world but only in Nigeria or Africa. You can not coexist with those that does not want to coexist with you.

What on earth are you guys talking about here? This was the reason he was dismissed as GOC by Mr. Gowon. For example out of the 5500 strong brigade he sent into Owerri in 1968 less than 270 made it out alive. Adekunle was actually dismissed from the Nigerian army dishonorably for drug dealing. when ojukwu killed Col Banjo who was leading biafra army, the east hailed the action
when the igbo soldiers killed all the leaders of other regions and left the igbo politicians, it was smart and good according to igbos
when aguiyi ironsi refused to probe the igbo coup plotters, igbo hailed it
when nnamid azikwe and balewa arrested awolowo and imprisoned him, that was wisdom according to igbos.
when Brigadier Wellington Duke Bassey, the man who commanded nigerian army parade and the seniormost military officer at independence was fraudulently demoted and his junior( aguyi ironsi, who he personally trained and was commissioned 3 years under him ), was elevated above him , that was hailed by igbos.
When aguiyi ironsi sacked the yoruba man who was the senior most judge of the country and a junior igbo man was unilaterally promoted, and despite the clamour of the all other ethnic groups on nigeria then, aguiyi Ironsi claimed it was a decision of government. It was good by igbos then

@@DanielAcosta-vr5ip then i remember c my village was wiped out of anyone who remained during that awful time even my grandpa who refused to flee was brutally assaulted left with broken bones and every one else butchered . The man that murdered unarm children and women without weapon is a dreaded soldier, terrible
in a war your people caused by first committing ethnic cleansing by killing other ethnic group
@@ayenia2736
No. In a war meant to save you from operation wettie- aka ethnic cleansing of Yoruba by Yoruba. Get it?
@@ayenia2736
Yes. During wild wild west and operation wettie, armed Yoruba thugs supporting Akintola would drive up to an Awolowo supporting neighbour hood and yell "up Awo" to lure out the hapless civilians. Once the doomed fellows troop out to cheer their hero, the Akintola thugs would douse them with gasoline and open fire killing maiming as many as possible. That was the state of Yorubaland which prompted junior officers of the Nigerian army- led by Majors Emmanuel Ifeeajuna, Wole Ademoyega, Chukwuma Nzeogwu etc. to stage a military coup which they did and halted the raving madness...but Yorubas turned coat chameleonically
and the rest is history.
Loved by Nigerian dread by Biafran
He was a great man loved by Nigerians & others who knew him. But what did the one Nigeria he loved so much & fought for do for him?
It got him, even as a war hero, ignonimously dismissed from the Nigeria Army on flimsy grounds. His Nigeria never considered it necessary to confer, even the least national honour, on him.
There's no doubt Brigadier Adekunle died a unhappy man. His circumstances were sad, tragic and a lesson in & for Project Nigeria.
I come in peace.
Nigeria still betrayed him shortly. In his mind at old age he must have regretted his roles in the Nigerian army. He was very outspoken, so his colleagues undermined him after the war. Gowon, Obasanjo and co.

Thankyou for not being tribalistic.@@chukwuemekaokolo7296
He dealt with the stubborn ipobs
I went to secondary school with 2 of his nephews, I see one of those guys through his face. Quite a striking resemblance.
Used and dumped. According to his own son...he died a miserable sinner.
Sinner because he fought a war as a commander ?
He died as a hero. He fought for what he believed.
The end is always messy.

Did you guys know that when his troops got to Uyo in Akwa Ibom, he lined up five men who were mainly college graduates, which was a rare thing then, and had them shot at what is now Plaza, Uyo
It's not true. The massacre was at Asaba and Adekunle wasn't even there. It was Colonel Ibrahim Taiwo.
@@olusolaafikode853: So you can't differentiate between Asaba and Uyo? You are the type that shout One Nigeria yet have no clues about the East. Im sure you like the SS and SE argument yet you can't differentiate even the languages
@@onuchinathaniel9368 It seems you are jumping to conclusions, assuming you know me personally. You claim I have no clue about the South East and South South regions, and that I can't differentiate languages. Your information is incorrect: there was an Asaba Massacre in Delta State (part of the old Bendel State or MidWest Nigeria), not in Uyo (Akwa Ibom). The massacre was led by Col. Ibrahim Taiwo. You assert that I lack knowledge about the East because you are from there, which is amusing. Additionally, Akwa Ibom is not part of the South East, and it is indeed multilingual.
@@onuchinathaniel9368and before you jump into conclusions, read books or at least watch videos, don't come here and spill out things to people in an incoherent manner.
@@olusolaafikode853 : You just listen to yourself and yet pretend to be objective. I don't need to know you, to figure out your poor understanding of a subject that virtually defines my own birth and existence.
You must know a lot about the Asaba Massacre. You are correct about Col Ibrahim Taiwo leading the line at Asaba. You managed to create an argument that wasn't the issue in the first place.
I used to see him taking fresh air and looking at the horizon from his balcony while returning from pry school in Surulere during my younger days (mid-70s). He was both enigmatic and mythical to me.
My office and home was around his 3-4 story building with a balcony. He was a military genius who forced Yorubas to enlist in large numbers at the outset of the civil war.
