God, Tom Odell, I wish we were neighbors. As a writer who has been around the block a few times I see what you struggle with and wish we could have a morning tea or coffee once a week. I see you so differently than you see yourself and see you in a way you/anyone can't see into him/herself. Your artistic vision is like a "divine inspiration" that overtakes you and works through you. I'm not talking Christian evangelical claptrap, but something psychological and metaphysical and, frankly, spiritual but not religious: spiritual like music is spiritual and speaks to all the invisible parts of us that make us who we are, our true selves. You clearly understand that, or 'feel' that as a musician/composer/singer. Your work proves that. You create some of the most intimate works of art I have ever encountered. I listen to your music and get what I call 'heart chills' because your work is, above all else, True and Beautiful, even in its Pain.
As artists our personal lives can be very problematic when we're trying to create something beautiful and real even when reality sets in to slap us and make us feel inadequate. But that's only because we know what we want to create and it always seems just out of reach. Kind of like 'love' you speak of in your songs. Yet you stick with it and the work goes on and becomes something startlingly pertinent to the collective, not to mention chillingly touching to the heart.

I am a native (Northern) Californian and I can't imagine you in Los Angeles. Your artistry, your psyche, your artistic sensibility is at complete odds with the values of southern California. Thank God you got out of there before it hypnotized and seduced you. (If you haven't seen the British series "Episodes", where Tamsin Greig and Stephen Mangan, two TV writers with a hit British show, are seduced away from England to work in L.A. and what it did to them, please check it out. I'm sure it will speak to you. Also, there's a Scottish performer/comedian I think you would identify with: Daniel Sloss. The first 2/3 of his act are hilarious and then suddenly it shifts and the last 1/3 isn't. Yet it's the most powerful standup work I've ever seen. (BTW, I HATE standup comedy and only watched it because my partner was watching it. Now I'm a devotee of his the way I'm a devotee of yours.) Most of his work is on Netflix.
I guess I've embarrassed myself enough here. I probably just should have said I love what you do and love you for doing it. You've pretty much not only touched my life, but changed it. Very important, since I'm almost at the end of it.
