    I inherited a Miele White Pearl that had been stored in a damp garage unused for over 10 years, used it to clean my house (including loads of concrete dust as it was a new build). Then I found the bag was completely split and the dirt was being blown all over the insides of the machine. The motor protection filter was also missing, so concrete dust was being sucked right into the motor.
    I cleaned the dust from the insides and replaced the bag and filter. It's worked perfectly ever since.
    So those saying that this hack to re-use bags will somehow kill their machine is just talking nonsense. Mine has been through far far worse and it's totally fine. They're built like tanks.
    Great video BTW - I'll try this.

      Built like tanks, yes. There are many types of high-pressure clips that can be used to re-seal the vacuum bag - I use the bull-dog clips. Been doing it for years.

    I'm a cheapskate: I even re-use the paper bags, as well as the fabric ones. I just empty them out through the existing hole - a slightly dusty job - give them a few gentle bangs to dislodge the dust, then shake and vacuum them. My Miele Cat&Dog has lasted well over 20 years and is still going strong....

    All you have to do is carefully vacuum the bag out using another vacuum, try to keep the bag expanded while vacuuming. I use my tristar or a shop vacuum which is easy dump and I don't have to toss the bag on the tristar. You don't have to get it all, just 80 or 90 percent, so you can reuse. Then there is no cutting or opening of the bag and the miele bag retains 100percent of its structure.

    at first i thought this was brilliant, the cut was strategical and good choice furthest from motor, not worried about leaking if i use strong duct tape, BUT the issue is the fine dust that already exists on the inner walls of the bag afte the first use !! Fine you remove the bulk, 99% of the dust , but the layer of dust on the walls will get thicker and thicker. So basically Until the miele motor get;s a fresh bag, you said 1 year of 5 reuses, that means practically, it;s like it running on full bag because if that layer i talked about for a year, the motor will have to work harder.

    I've always found it odd, why on earth we cannot buy a bag with a zipper or velcro or something, so it can be emptied. I dont even care about the expensive, its more about the whole single use throw away. Nothing should ever be single use. It's a horrible mentality.

      Nothing gets done unless it makes a lot of money . A reusable bag would sell 1 or two per cleaner. A one use sells thousands and potentially gets recycled. This is the only reason reusable bags do not exist. Its like.. .if nothing ever wore out, on one would have a job making the next one.(of anything). But i do see your point!

  • @MylesV

    You also can't remove the fine dust that is embedded in the fibers of the bag. This puts more strain on the motor.

    Personally miele is the best Hoover weve had. I like the idea of cost cutting as the bags are expensive for what they are. I'm going to try this once mayb twice before putting in a new bag. The people commenting 3 years ago saying about the ruining the motor, I bet his miele is still running today. Built to last.

    Weeping Jesus! Are there truly so many people out there who lack an imagination? Okay, I tried the masking tape and it didn't work well for me. So then I used some tiny bull-dog clips and they did a marvelous job. Next, I tried using a common office stapler, and it worked well the first time but then it was hard removing the staples when it was time to empty out. As for the other filters, I simply washed them out in water, dried them on the line and they worked fine. By the way, there are plenty of other porous materials that serve just as well as filters, if you have a mind to try new things. In conclusion, I can only say FIGURE IT OUT FOR YOURSELVES CHAPS (AND CHAPPETTES), before you start to winge about someone's idea that was given out for free to help you. Simple mechanics do not require the expertise of an engineer, just a creative mind. Thanks for pricking up your ears.

    As long as you reseal the bag well you can do this once or twice... and it will not damage the vacuum. I bought my miele used on ebay, and am very comfortable with repairing it due to the vast availability of used miele parts... so yeah I reuse genuine bags instead of using generic bags. It works just fine!!

      Victoria Rioux Don't listen to this airhead, NO it's NOT a good idea to re-use vacuum bags. Their pores are blocked during its first use and you can never recover its original efficiency no matter what you do! Even an aftermarket bag is better than re-using. You aren't saving money when you burn out your motor.

      I think you're right. I was replacing my first bag recently and I took a look at how dirty it was and decided there's no way I can reuse it. If it looked like my shark bag (it was a very good vacuum btw, sadly replaced because the power head went and I couldn't get parts), I think that bag may have extra lives but not this one.

    just break the cap/valve off.. fish it out if it falls in...you dont need it...its just to close off the dust when discarding the bag...its for the fussy ones who dont like seeing the dust..then pull out the dust with a tool tweezers,,thin plyers..put it back in and reuse bag..it wont hurt hoover without the cap..its just a bit messy emptying it...reuse bag verses buy new bag..its your choise. good luck.

      You'll still burn out your motor. There is no way you can reseal that bag properly. These are for single use! It's very unhygienic. If your concerned with single use bags to buy a bagless vacuum. That's just ruining your miele. Performance Reviews knows his stuff.... He repairs vacuums daily. I think it's gross & it's terrible for your machine.

They're still going strong AND I've never come across the noise that Mr Performance Reviews would you to believe is due to using non-genuine bags....

  • @SpiderSmokingSam

    bad idea... you don't notice it at first but your motor is slowly gonna get louder over time as dust gets in there, and especially as larger grit makes it past the masking tape... which is a completely inadequate tape for attempting this. honestly you might be able to pull this off with some gorilla tape or whatever the strongest duct-tape-type stuff is that you can get, and while you're optimizing, don't cut the entire length of the bag. but bottom line is you paid top vacuum dollar for a machine that you're going to damage if you do this, and just subtly enough that you won't notice it until you've ruined your machine. how do you think i know.

    • @mart150870
      @mart150870 Рік тому

      Pay attention to ALL of your filters. Wash them, dry them, and replace them when they look worn out. Pay attention to the vacuum bag - if you re-use it don't forget to seal it properly with bull-dog clips or even some other type of strong clip. Rule of thumb: don't be lazy.

  • @crimson25543
    @crimson25543 4 роки тому +5

    The whole reason I want a filtered bag system is so I specifically don't have to empty, look at, or touch in any way, what gets vacuumed up. I have a Dyson upright and I hate that vacuum for many reasons but one of the big reasons is the grossness of emptying that canister. YUCK. There are knockoff Miele bags that cost less but perform well. Buying a premium filtering vacuum that has a bag design then trying to reuse the bags seems counterproductive to me. Just buy a no-bag canister if that's what is wanted.

  • @turntime2gld
    @turntime2gld 4 роки тому +5

    If I tried this, I would probably use duct tape to ensure better sticking. But I like the idea of using a canister vacuum to suck out the contents of the bag.

  • @aprilarmstrong951
    @aprilarmstrong951 5 років тому +2

    This is a good solution in a pinch - company coming, out of bags, do this. Use a strong duct tape to seal. However, I agree with the comments below that this is not a wise practice. The dirt will get out that ruin your vacuum. Reuse the bag once, perhaps and then put in a new one. At the very least, if you use this "reuse" hack you will double the use of expensive vacuum bags. Be extra careful of sharp particles that make be lurking within your dirt.

  • @gregoryolsen4509

    Thanx, everyone, for your considered remarks. I posit that finding the balance between a well-designed machine performing at its optimum and producing less landfill is a challenge worth considering all the time in our modern, consumer-based economies. I take on board the concerns expressed here about ruining the machine and voiding its warranty.
    There are several factors that inform my decision to continue to reuse the bags:
    i) I use a minimum of power to save energy use and wear and tear on the motor;
    ii) I purchased my Miele in January 2014, so it's over four years old and, therefore, the warranty has expired;
    iii) I would suggest a maximum of four uses, stretching the five if the bag is still in good condition;
    iv) The tape has never broken or come loose so that's not a problem of me;
    v) The price of the bags has increased, I bought a pack of four recently was A$26 or A$6.50 each, but I do see the point of buying even more in bulk. A pack of 16 is around A$74 or A$4.60 each. Non-genuine bags are even cheaperheaper, down to $3 per bag. However, the problem of landfill still exists if I don't reuse them.
    If you have any concerns about the reused bag not performing well enough for you, replace it. Simple as that. Even two or three uses is better than just one for the environment! :-)

    • @beccc598
      @beccc598 6 років тому +1

      Hi Gregory, I applaud you for your initiative and determination to protect the environment. However I don't think this method would be a good idea for other people generally as they may use their vacuum on max suction or use poorer quality tape (hence this method is not foolproof).
      It may also be worth taking into account the environmental impact of having to manufacture a new motor because the old one wore out due to contamination with larger debris should a person's cut/tape job be leaky.
      Finally, it should be noted that as the bag fills up with larger clumps of debris, the pores in the wall are also trapping microscopic debris. I read the bag has an efficiency of 75% at trapping ~0.3micron sized particles, which will still be there after you empty the bag. Saturated pores = higher airflow resistance which means the motor is working harder, getting hotter due to reduced airflow and therefore potentially shortening lifespan.
      My proposal would be to pull out the debris through the hole rather than cut the bag and not reuse it more than once or twice at most. More effectively, I would try and contact Miele and get them onto the R&D train of producing biodegradable bags

    • @wildlifestationsbundanoon9689
      @wildlifestationsbundanoon9689  6 років тому +1

      On balance, Becc C, I concur with your comments. A maximum of three uses per bag would probably be he best compromise for the average vacuumer. Our place is pretty spick and span so I'm only vacuuming up the ubiquitous dust and lint that as been with humankind since we started building permanent dwellings! I only ever use the machine at its two thirds power setting so I have little risk at burning out the motor. It's still as happy as Larry and doesn't look like biting the dust (excuse the pun) in the foreseeable future.
      Nevertheless, you raise good points about longevity and appropriately using the appliance, or any appliance for that matter, to extract out of it its full working life. I really like your idea about writing to Miele about the matter. I think you and I should start a worldwide campaign for them, and all disposable vacuum cleaner manufacturers, to lift their game and produce environmentally friendly bags. :-)

    If you're thinking of doing this for environmental reasons think of this: Which is worse, a couple of full bags in a landfill or a couple of dead vacuum cleaners in a landfill? Never reuse bags. You'll put way to much strain on the motor (not to mention all the fine dust not being trapped by the bag anymore being sucked straight into the motor, damaging it in the long run and then blown straight out)

    I feel like anybody who complains about this is a Miele chill. People use old t-shirts as vacuum bags and they work fine. The bags just act as a prefilter for the hepa filter anyway. The fan inside has a sealed bearing. Dust isn't gonna hurt it. Vacuum bags are like non refillable ink cartridges for printers. They exist to make money nothing more. The bagless version of this is twice the price for the same thing. Ask yourself why that is.

    Hello,
    My question isn't this method unsafe for the cleaner's motor, if the bag gets opened? Has it happened to you? I bought yesterday a Miele vacuum cleaner for 300 euro (~330 USD) and I'm not sure if I want to risk causing fire or destroying the cleaner using this method!

    • @wildlifestationsbundanoon9689
      @wildlifestationsbundanoon9689  8 років тому +2

      I've never has any problem with the motor. As far as the machine is concerned, there's just a standard bag installed. The tape is underneath the front of the bag at the furthest point from the exhaust outlet, nowhere near the motor. That's also the point of least air suction. The tape has never come off either.
      As I mentioned in original post, it's probably advisable to only use a bag a total of five times as I'd imagine that the efficiency of the filtering may have been reduced somewhat by that stage. :-)

    • @katylady1981
      @katylady1981 7 років тому +5

      PolicemanxXx you will void your 7yr motor warranty if you use aftermarket parts or alter any part on the machine. You can empty the bag after ever use if you want, but you'll never remove the fine bits that stick to the sides and between the layers and your motor WILL be overworking every time you turn the machine on. A bag should last you at least 2-3 months, so you're only spending about $20-30/yr. Your Miele will last you 20 years or more if you follow the basic maintenance instructions which is basically change your bag and filter on time.

    • @Vantasks

      What is the purpose of the ribbons in the bag? I actually thought Miele may have put them there on purpose to make it really difficult to clean out the bag from the opening. I tried this already after my friends bag got full and they had no replacement bags, it was almost impossible to empty it through the hole, then I started ripping some of the ribbons and it made it much easier to empty it through the hole and I was thinking their only purpose was to make it hard to empty the bag :o ??

    • @Dirty_Bear22
      @Dirty_Bear22 7 років тому +5

      VanTasks the ribbons are there to help with evenly dust loading the bag, don't even think about trying to save a few dollars by attempting to reuse the bag. If you reuse them you're just looking at a pricy blown motor replacement.

    I would NEVER recommend doing this to any vacuum cleaner, especially a Miele. Miele's are the most respected and reliable vacuum cleaners in the industry. By reusing the bags not only are you putting strain on the motor, decreasing cleaning effectiveness and ruining your HEPA filter.... but, if you were to experience a premature motor failure, the moment a technician saw that you were reusing bags, your warranty would be void and you would be financially responsible for the repair. Awful.

      Even if you're a millionaire, why pay for something if you don't have to? If you are clever, you can make your own recyclable bags, or you can use the default bag up to 100 times by slicing it open, emptying the rubbish, and then using bull-dog clips (or other type of clips) to re-seal the bag.

    There are certain things that should never be reused. Perhaps gently brooming the floor or using a carpet sweeper to get up the gross dirt first. Then vacuum up the finer particles. This will stretch out your bag changes. Five bucks is not much in this economy. Please reconsider.

The fine dirt you pick up, saw dust, spilled powder, powdered kitty litter etc clogs the pores of the bag, making the bag sensor sense that the bag is full because the motor is working harder. Bad advice!!! Do NOT ever reuse ANY vacuum bag as the fine particles coat and clog the pores of the bag which in turn reduces suction, airflow to the motor, and filtration capabilities. What is the point of purchasing a premium vacuum that can last 20+ years and then do something that not only will void the warranty, but will greatly reduce the life of the motor? If you're that cheap, just buy a bagless junk vacuum. So once again. ...BAD ADVICE!! Doing this will VOID your warranty!

    • @cl2nden1st89
      @cl2nden1st89 4 роки тому

      katylady1981 Never ever do this/that... The world is black and white and nothing in between... Well, in the real world, we make choices regardless of what a manufacturer might advise. He did mention that his machine is already out of warranty. It also depends on the nature of what you are vacuuming. For example, I never reuse hepa bags that I use on cleaning fine toner powder. In other words, KNOWING exactly what kind of stuff you’re filling the bag with will allow you to gauge whether the bag can still be reused. Further, the surface area of the bag is quite large and it is unlikely under normal house circumstances that you clog enough of the pores to cut off air flow completely. Owning a vacuum gauge and a particle counter makes sense whether you choose to reuse bags. And frequent visual inspections of the status of your bags and filters... honestly there are a number of wise steps that can be done to avoid disaster. Using genuine Miele bags is never a 100% full proof way of avoiding destroying your machine.

      The bags are a money grab by Miele. They could easily add a zipper and overlapping velcro (to prevent dust escaping), but they don't. And the idea that the bags won't filter as well if emptied is complete BS. Furthermore, the bags are SMALL, and having to constantly use new bags is environmentally disingenuous on Miele's part. Miele knows this and they don't care. It's all about selling more stuff.
