  • A friend of mine asked me to restore his grandfather's vintage radio. I took it a step further by adding modern equipment and smart features (including Alexa!) to upgrade this beautiful radio into something that performs as well as any modern audio system.
I also let Hacker Jack out of his void to help me with the software stuff.

Beautiful presentation, very nicely written, great camera work and nicely put together. Better than anything Hollywood has put out in a long time. I can’t believe that you only have 55 views. Thank you.

You did a great job, lad. You know how to turn vintage devices with new makeover technology.

This is amazing man. I aspire to even learn a percentage of what you’ve accomplished in this video. I collected a couple of old radios and thought “ what if I modernize this?” And found your video. You deserve more views brother. Keep doing what you do.

I want to do something similar to this. I want to take an existing RCA (RT2380) 5.1 Home Theater receiver from 2005 and put it into a 1930's Atwater Kent (Model 70) radio cabinet. I want to create a control interface that looks period appropriate to the Atwater Kent, but have it control the RCA AV receiver housed inside it. The entire existing radio can be removed from the cabinet and put in safe storage. The new control panel will have a burl walnut contact paper over a thin steel backing plate to look like the original. Controls should be limited to toggles switches (brass if possible) and brown Bakelite knobs. The original display was just a radio frequency slide display. The new display will have to use the digital blue LED from the RCA control panel, but I want to put a red filter over it to make it look older. Then I'd frame it with some type of brass art deco medallion - maybe a brace switch plate or something similar off of ETSY.
Bass speaker and center speaker are already inside the cabinet, but I need to do something with the 4 satellite speakers. I was thinking to mount them around the room inside some fabricated speaker housings - something that, again, looks like an art deco enclosure of that time period.

Excellent work - looking to doing something similar to a larger Console Radio once i find the "donner box".
Did you find any gotcha's or things you wouldn't do a second time ?

Thanks! I've run into some issues with Alexa not initializing every time it's powered on. Still working to diagnose that. I would have picked a higher capacity battery for portable use. The battery I used is only capable of 18W, I think a 24-30W battery would be better.

consol radios usually have a lot more space in them, and probably have external audio input (originally intended for turntables) so you could create a device with modern functionality and preserve the original tube electronics that will give some character to the sound
