those were the days my friends-- I wish they would have never ended. but boy o boy- didn't they. im so glad I was there to enjoy them wonderful days of the late 60s and early 70s. truly a magical time indeed
My Buddy had a '71 Road Runner. 440 Six Pack, 4 Speed. Orange w Black Stripe's, Black Bucket seat's w console. He had big 15" N50's on the back with slotted aluminum wheels. Old School Cool. 😎
Still my favorite Muscle Car of the week. Love the color combo of the black with gold interior, 4 speed with the bench seat. Always loved the look of the 71-72 Road Runners. Love the one year only Road Runner grill. Correction on the mention of the ad for the 71 Road Runner stating the standard insurance is standard for the 383 and the 440 Road Runners. It is the 383 and the 340 Road Runners not the 440.Love the Muscle Car of the week series. Keep up the good work!
I must say that the 1971-1974 Plymouth Satellite Road Runners are the best looking and my #1 favorite Satellites of all time, especially the 1971 Road Runner with a 425 HP 426 HEMI motor and/or the '71 GTX with a 440 Six Pak motor.
I think back of my HS parking lot. There was some nice Muscle parked there 1975-1978. Cuda, Judge, GTX, Trans Am, Firebird, 55-57 Belairs, Chevelle, Impala SS, Z28, Dodge California Van , Chevy Shorty Van.......... and the Datsun B210 and 510 sedan lol. I drove a blue 1969 Plymouth Fury II Sport Coupe with the 318.... it was the family driver that pulled an 18 travel trailer lol!
In 1973 my brother went to a used car lot to by a 1968 383 4 speed Roadrunner. They had a black 71 hemi Roadrunner parked next to his 68. The sales staff was doing everything they could to sell that 71 Hemi. NO ONE would buy it. They offered it for the exact same price as his 68. The 68 was a great car but damn, sure wish he had that 71 Hemi today.
This is one of my favorite cars in the brother's collection. Love their black 69 Hemi Charger and the green 69 A12 Roadrunner they have too. Love em all really. Most of em at least
@@markw208 Any 70-71 MOPAR (and probably earlier) model that had a 383 magnum standard (or 340 optional) had a 3 speed stick standard, you had to pay extra for a Torqueflite or a 4 speed stick. The engine size classified them as standard regardless of what transmission you got. Any model that had the 440 standard (GTX, Charger R/T, Coronet R/T) had a Torqueflite standard.
Love the fuselage design of the early 70's. Most either love it or hate it. As cool as the new design is, I'd still take a `69 Roadrunner if given the choice.
I always liked the 70 Roadrunner the best myself just because it was the first year for the Air Grabber Hood and the Hurst Pistol Grip 4 speed shifter. And the first year that the 440 six barrel was available as an engine option in a base model Roadrunner, although the A12 Roadrunner came out late in 69. The A12 was a complete package and not just an engine option
This car is so hot I can't stand it. I would take this car over 'beach front' property if the choice was given. And yes.. I know, I could just sell the property..buy the car and have lots of money left over. But.. you know what I mean :)
Another great vid! But i think the days of moonshine running was long over by then, Kev... Only good ol' boys were making moonshine in those days- prohibition was well and truely over
I have this model because I never liked the "BOXY" 1968-1970 models. A total box. In 1971 John Hurlitz was hired by Plymouth to desin this new aerodynamic body. This car killed in NASCAR. It didn't need the Superbird body to save it on the high speed tracks. Hurlitz also came up with the greatest car of all time.....the 1970 'Cuda. These cars are ridiculously under-rated.....as it can compete with The 'Cuda. An awesome showcar.
Along with a car's power, the insurers checked the age of the owner. If under 25, a muscle car owner had to fork out huge insurance premiums back from 1968 to 1971. I was around then, though a little too young to own one. But I had friends in their 20s with well-paying jobs at the nearby nickel mine. They financed their muscle cars, which meant steep monthly payments with the car as collateral. They'd drag race them weekends at a nearby track. And I've got to say, a lot of guys wrecked their cars, often with fatal results. People drank and smoked heavily back then, and the fast car crowd lived to party. That resulted in wrecks, but so did falling asleep at the wheel while driving back to the mines when the weekend was over. That era, when things were so wild and loose, will never return. I lived through it and came out unscathed, mostly due to luck.
Hi and thank's for all videos. Its funny you said pistol grip for hurst shifter handle, here province of Québec Canada, here we said dague (dagger) grip in publicity.I'm sure your right,it's a American car,and Hurst its Yankee too.My friend have this pistol grip on his road runner 1974 400 c.i.d.,i have a Javelin, sometimes we go North of U.S.A. border town for racing against Yankee ,in street racing, american are serious competitor, and American women, beautiful girl.Hi salute all American. M.O.
Mopar guys, chime in. It looks like the dash vents are for an ac car, but ac was not an option on hemi cars. Also if it had strato vents there would only be two vents on the left side, and the road runner name would also be all the way to the right where the third vent is on this car. Also, there is no road runner head with the name plate on the dash. it is an earlier production car from what I can tell because it has clear front turn signals amber where later production I think, so maybe dash lay out changed mid year?
At 2:18 the ad says 383 and 340 not the 440. As far as standard insurance rating . Kevin keeps saying the 440. Not positive but i think he meant the 340.
What are the horizontal slats in the exhaust tips, and why does the interior of each pipe appear orange? Cosmetic (Hemi Orange pipes to go with the block), or some performance enhancement?
super cool car! my only note/question: why the Satellite ornament on the front, just ahead of the hood on a roadrunner? back in the day, roadrunners always had a roadrunner there, including that name encircling it. & the satellite ornaments were always red, white & blue i believe, not black. i got my my 1st car in '84 for $1,500, she was a '71 satellite sebring plus, 2dr ht (obv.), 440 4bbl out of a '74 cop car, 3.55sg & 727. wish i still had that gorguus beast.
Nicholas Maher ..I think you're right about the '71 rr. I must have been recalling the '72 beepers. they had a roadrunner head w/feather plume in the circle, rather than the standard Plymouth ornament. thnx for the correction.
Well I am no Numbers wizard, but as any Road Runners since day one, they weren't meant to be a "Luxurious" ride, if you wanted to go that route you purchased a GTX, perhaps the reason for the lack of options in this particular ride.
"insurance companies were leaning on the manufactures to detune their cars to prevent wrecks",,,why don't they lean on cell phone producers that cause even more wrecks,,,lol.
the 71 roadrunner was by far the ugliest of the roadrunner series....back end is hideous!!! I mean I'm mopar all the way but this is one mopar that I would trade for a sweet 69 Z28 with a cross roam DZ302.
Many say they hated this new body style. I loved it! It is truly one awesome design.
it is the sexiest of all the muscle cars
Somebody ticked on all the right boxes with this HEMI.
those were the days my friends-- I wish they would have never ended. but boy o boy- didn't they. im so glad I was there to enjoy them wonderful days of the late 60s and early 70s. truly a magical time indeed
Modern cars are way better than this dinosaur in every way.

Only '71 has the Flush side marker lights and the hemi though..
I caught that also....
The roadrunner and the GTX 71 are my favorite. They are just badass looking
I must say that the 1971-1974 Plymouth Satellite Road Runners are the best looking and my #1 favorite Satellites of all time, especially the 1971 Road Runner with a 425 HP 426 HEMI motor and/or the '71 GTX with a 440 Six Pak motor.
What a gorgeous car...certainly one of the best muscle cars of all time.
THIS n the 71 hemicuda r so far my favorite hemis 😍😎
Love the pistol grip shifter for when you are going to pull the trigger on a hemi...
People talk about the old muscle cars from the 60's and 70's but nowadays it seems 500hp is entry level

Next to the 71 Hemi Cuda . This is the best looking car Plymouth made 👌
Had a 1971 Road Runner with a 440 6Pack 4 speed with the dana loved that car
You have to admit this car is unusual and insanely rare.............55 made???????????
Holy ship
This is one of my favorite cars in the brother's collection. Love their black 69 Hemi Charger and the green 69 A12 Roadrunner they have too. Love em all really. Most of em at least
Plymouth made the best muscle cars ever
Great Mopar! The 69 RR was my favorite.
69 i think was the best time for all cars. I was a kid back then but i sure remember some of those beautys. 😮
@@LBS-qw8gf I was born in 68 but when I was young my neighbor had a yellow 69 road runner and that has been my favorite car since I first saw it.
Definitely one of the sweetest cars ever!
388 and 340, rather than 440, got the standard insurance rating. The 340 in 1971 still had 10.25:1 compression ratio.
As long as it was a 3 speed. In 71 the standard transmission was a 3 speed manual.
@@markw208 Any 70-71 MOPAR (and probably earlier) model that had a 383 magnum standard (or 340 optional) had a 3 speed stick standard, you had to pay extra for a Torqueflite or a 4 speed stick. 71 340 also received the legendary Thermoquad!
440 compression ratio was not drop that low in 71
Plymouth is the king of muscle car grills.
hal merch I agree especially the 71 but the 70 Charger wrap-around Grill beautiful
hal merch you are exactly right. Personally I love the 70 GTX grill honeycomb, different than the 70 roadrunner.
That is the Mopar for me!!!!!
BAD to the bone is the perfect description of this car
Love the fuselage design of the early 70's. Most either love it or hate it. As cool as the new design is, I'd still take a `69 Roadrunner if given the choice.

One of the most beautiful muscle cars. I’ll take this over any mustang or camaro of the era
Like the 383 with the red bumper and ralleys in the brochure
That is one sweet machine!!
love the dog dish hub caps and bench seat options weirder the better.
Damn. That's one badass Road Runner.
Beautiful car and again I love the way you do commentary on the
This was a monster in 71 all it needs is big rubber hit the trach
Thats Badass for sure,,,,,almost bought one, waited to long,,went to get it and it was GONE, AND IT WAS PETTY BLUE
I can’t believe they didn’t honk the horn at least once.🛠🤪😱
Yeah, this may be my new favorite
Very Sweet Car. Love it. Bad Ass,
Road. Runner
This car is so hot I can't stand it. I would take this car over 'beach front' property if the choice was given. And yes.. I know, I could just sell the property..buy the car and have lots of money left over. But.. you know what I mean :)
71 and 72 haven't grown on me yet.....but it's getting . Beautiful car spoilers,paint,d train
Another great vid! But i think the days of moonshine running was long over by then, Kev... Only good ol' boys were making moonshine in those days- prohibition was well and truely over
That fade at 0:37
Be a lot cooler if the strobe stripe was black, to match the hood decal, and if the interior was black. The rest is insane.
I'm not a big Mopar guy but this thing is amazing. I can only imagine what the selling price would be at auction for this.
I have this model because I never liked the "BOXY" 1968-1970 models. A total box. In 1971 John Hurlitz was hired by Plymouth to desin this new aerodynamic body. This car killed in NASCAR. Adding Keystone Classics will make beavers drool
I love Plymouth
Me Too!

72 was the year they went to net rating, not 71.
Fukkn gorgeous. Those rims and tires!!!
The fresh air system (Air Grabber) was standard on all Hemi cars. You couldn't get the standard RR hood with a Hemi car.
Bench seat with 4 speed = Very very Tough
I cant imagine driving a Hemi with those tires.
383 $ 340 had the insurance break.

Last of a Legend.
Now this is a bad*ss machine
Love it, but question the interior. A 'guy' I use to work with owned from original, a 71 GTX/4spd. One of 11. He showed me pictures.
I want one!! Now put a demon engine in it. 😄
David Freiburger had a black on black on black 440 6 Pack 4 Speed 71 Roadrunner
This guy looks like the white Morpheus.
I think it looks better with the body coloured bumpers and not the chrome, thats just my opinion though.
I think colored bumpers makes the car look cheap and makes it makes it look likes it's made out of plastic.
It was sinister looking, businesslike, in any color.
I can't believe you guys found one of these! and with a Hemi! how much is it for sale for?
Thought this was Nick Offerman for a minute.
What are the horizontal slats in the exhaust tips, and why does the interior of each pipe appear orange? Cosmetic (Hemi Orange pipes to go with the block), or some performance enhancement?
they're called 'machine gun' tips..very cool.
Purely cosmetic
standard E-body by the look of it
This is what Bakugo would be as a car.
I try to like these "newer" body designs, but just cannot get used to them--the rear quarters look so 'bloated' like they are stuffed with Bondo.
super cool car! my only note/question: why the Satellite ornament on the front, just ahead of the hood on a roadrunner? back in the day, roadrunners always had a roadrunner there, including that name encircling it.
That's a Plymouth ornament with the words "Plymouth" encircling it, other Road Runners I see have the same.
Nicholas Maher ..I think you're right about the '71 rr. I must have been recalling the '72 beepers. they had a roadrunner head w/feather plume in the circle, rather than the standard Plymouth ornament. thnx for the correction.
This is one bad a$$ mopar machine!
I likey !
This has Disc brakes up front, or drums?
Disc
He sounds like ron swanson
Is this car for sale, because it's the perfect combination!!
Now he has one in orange i believe.
Was the 440 six pack detuned for 71?
MBailey1977 the answer is yes. In 1971 the hp rating was 385 down from 390. But 5 hp that’s really nothing.
Probably on paper
1971 were slow as the HP really dropped.
what's different between roadrunner and gtx?
+ilham Defra
I believe the Road Runner was more of a stripped down muscle car as opposed to the GTX which came
with a higher end trim level.
so 'gtx' is a trim? like 'denali' on gmc car?
I suppose that is one way to look at it.
425 hp with net or gross hp?
Who are "the Brothers"??
the made how many cars??
Well I am no Numbers wizard, but as any Road Runners since day one, they weren't meant to be a "Luxurious" ride, if you wanted to go that route you purchased a GTX, perhaps the reason for the lack of options in this particular ride.
"insurance companies were leaning on the manufactures to detune their cars to prevent wrecks",,,why don't they lean on cell phone producers that cause even more wrecks,,,lol.
Ikr fuck the insurance companies
Gas crunch didn't hit til '73
nice and all but.....I'd take the 69 and/or 70 any day over this one.....
69!
Could you please do a 68 SS Impala 427? Thank you.
Didn't care much about the 71. Don't like the body style at all.
Hated that body style.
the 71 roadrunner was by far the ugliest of the roadrunner series....back end is hideous!!! I mean I'm mopar all the way but this is one mopar that I would trade for a sweet 69 Z28 with a cross roam DZ302.
@MrQuickPick Hartford, CT Nooooo!
It’s a love hate thing with the 71 roadrunners. I own one and love it. 1970 superbees are a love hate thing as well.
I like the 71 much more than previous RR
