This was a very cool video. I don't think my solar geyser has any magnesium rods, but probably lots of clay residue. I have borehole water and clay accumulates quickly.
It all depends where you live if there is a lot of soft rock like lime close by then yes but if live in area with a lot of hard rock like granite then probably not.
It is best to use pure white vinegar or for every litre of white vinegar mix with 4 tablespoons of sodium bicarbonate. If it is diluted with water it will work but will take longer to free the scale / hardened minerals what with being less concentrated.
To remove lime scale you need to dissolve it by using a solution of one litre of white vinegar mixed with four table spoons of sodium bicarbonate which should be added slowly in a well ventilated area. On the tank close the drain valve and fill it by pouring the solution via one of the tube holes. If the tubes contain lime scale put them in the shade standing vertically with some form of support and cushioned at the base then fill the tube(s) with the above solution. The lime scale should dissolve within an hour then rinse the tank and tubes well with water before reassembly.
In theory yes if you can find a pure magnesium rod without a plastic or steel attachment cap. Never cut magnesium with a grinder blade or a saw blade as it is highly flammable. Good luck!
@@brieftodo How does the water circulate through the tubes? With the tubes closed on the bottom end, is the heat transfer done just from a thermosiphon action within each tube? How does this compare with ones that use heat pipes for doing the heat exchange?
Only top end water softeners would cut it and they aren't exactly cheap, in Mexico a 250 litre gravity fed solar water heater only costs around $400 USD (2021). Plus solar water heaters need the silicon seals to be changed every 2-3 years so I now do that (in my other video) at the same time as cleaning the tubes and the tank.
Thanks - I have to do this here in Yucatan MX and this was v.useful 😊

I suggest you to use non-weld tank to solve this issues.
Install the filters
God bless you for this super clear instructional video
You are very welcome
This looks like some work. Its been 4 years, did you keep up with cleaning since or let them crust up again?
Hi there. Informative video. What if I'm using harvested rain water. Whould I still get need to clean?
How the tubes are sealed with the tank, is there a rubber seal around the holes in the inner tank ?
Thanks for showing and sharing, subbed 😊
Would I still have scale in mine if I am using well water? Thanks for this super helpful video!!

Oh man, the benefits of having a flat roof...
Thanks!
Many thanks Sir.
Great Video! Thank you so much!!!
Thanks you ..
Gandhinagar??
What is the ratio of vinegar to be added to remove the scale inside of the tube

Which liquid is used to fix the rod ?
Hello in Mine I have a lot of lime
How can I get rid of lime

I don't think mine has that magnesium rod.
Is it ok if i buy new one and put it there??
In theory yes if you can find a pure magnesium rod without a plastic or steel attachment cap. Never cut magnesium with a grinder blade or a saw blade as it is highly flammable. Good luck!
What if the tubes get broke wi cleaning? Can I buy only 1 tube?
Yes, the majority of shops that sell solar water heaters also sell the replacement tubes, seals and magnesium rods
@@brieftodo Cool sir thanks u for the information

properly done!
Do you sell solar water heaters there
No but there are lots of stores selling them and the parts.
@@brieftodo Hello, I'm a Chinese manufacturer of solar water heater. I'm looking for a partner. Can I contact you
Where is the scale build up coming from? Is yours an open system, meaning the water also runs within the tubes?
Yes it is an open water system / gravity fed, the scale accumulates mainly in the base of every tube and in the base of the tank.
Thank you 😊 so much for this video. Please upload more videos on solar water heater maintenance. Thank you.
Yes, do you need a solar water heater over there

Why not just buy a water softner ?

This is not correct procedure to clean the etc solar.... This is not usefull video guys.......
Can you upload one correctly depicting the procedure and suitable for Indian system?
