The Mystery of Bob's Rock and the Enchanting Cemetery
Hidden away on the edge of a small town in Nottingham is a mysterious rock. hollowed out and peacefully nestled beside the most beautiful Cemetery.
in this video I look for Bob's Rock. an ancient stone said to be the third largest rock in Nottinghamshire carved out and adapted by man more than 1000 years ago.
But first we take a look at a gorgeous Cemetery. An idyllic setting amongst the trees, flowing landscape and rock formations.

That place looks so cool, wish my mates and, i had somewhere like that to hangout back in the day. Bet it brings many people joy on fridays still
Thank you. I can imagine it does. It was pleasant seeing virtually no litter etc
@@TrekkingExploration Can tell its cared for by how much efforts been made to make the steps, bike jumps etc
John Wesley (1703-91) founder of The Methodist religious movement preached on top of this stone outcrop near a quarry in 1794. The Wesley Place Chapel in Stapleford was built nearby.
Great Vid, I grew up in Beeston and Chilwell and when my Mum and Dad split up me and Mum moved to Cemetery Road in the first town house at the top opposite the cemetery. Being a young man at the time I used to find it quite spooky at night walking home from a few pints at the Horse and Jockey, what was interesting is I believe there was a rectory or larger house with workshops where the newer house where and Mum found lots of Broken headstones(with writing!) in the garden while digging.
The “garage” for the first house which was church owned and larger than the others I was alway told was a Mortuary and is the original building, I had to walk past it at night and it always gave me the creeps.
Onto Bobs rock I never knew that existed! Those ramps are called dirt jumps and yes they will be from Mountain bikers to jump plus the “viewing platform” they will send themselves off that .
I enjoyed reading your comments Matthew Thomas. Your spot on with your story.. I know this area well as I lived at 12 Cemetery Rd in the 70s & 80s.
8:25 You appear to have stumbled upon a mountain bike trail. They are graded in a similar way to ski routes (green/blue/red/black with green being the easiest and black the hardest). This one is definitely a black - the 'viewing platform' is a feature known as a 'road gap' and the sloping mounds at 10:12 are 'dirt jumps'. The pipes may have been added for drainage to prevent water from pooling up.
Yehhh man! Know about the drainage 😆🤙
Ain't seen this for yrs Ant...born and lived in Stapleford (Stabbo) till 1989 then moved to Trowell.my old school was George Spencer which was the main rival to Bramcote Park if memory serves me right!.I remember this building from my childhood and it's not changed in yrs although the graveyard holds a sad memory as an old school friend of mine is buried there.
Bob's rock wow that's a blast from the past infact I'm sure you could get up to it by going through what was Sandicliffe garage car park (if it's still there) or what was then then local tip.i only ever went up once so can't really remember if it was like how u found it... Even though it's been over 30yrs since moving away I still have very fond memories of Stapleford.
I love watching you find amazing places in my neck of the woods, there's so many wonderful ones around! Great vid!
Just re-viewed the video today again. It definitely is well made tour. Thanking you again for the tour. Well done Antony! Cheers mate! 🏴🙂👍🇺🇸
Glad you enjoyed it Martin. Thanks so much
I grew up in Stapleford and there are many sandstone outcrops in the area including nearby Sandiacre and Bramcote and also bit further afield at Dale Abbey with the hermit's cave. My junior school must have been named after the Fairfield family. Many thanks for making this video.
Thanks very much Paul. Dale Abbey and the area around that is definitely on the cards 🙂
Paul Bednall I learnt from you there, never thought Fairfield school would be named after the family. I went to St John's school which sits below Bob's Rock.
Not a place I knew about, l have a cycle out there, it's on the edge of my range on a bike but looks like it's worth it. Thanks for the video.
Glad you enjoyed it and thank you for watching
Wow that was amazing and loved Bob's rock well cute thanks for sharing take care xx
Love a good cemetery, and that one looks in great condition. Thanks for an interesting tale.
Thanks very much Bob much appreciated 🙂
Oh Ant! Everytime you put a great video up, you simply have to follow it with an even better one!!! Thanks mate. Cheers, Bob
Thanks very much that is very kind
What a fascinating trek! 😍
Lovely vid. Another interesting Nottingham location. Beautiful photography yet again. Thanks for the tour. 🤓👍
What a great discovery! You are so good at finding all these places. I look forward to many more. Thanks, Ant!
Hi Ant, thanks for another great video with some excellent finds and information.
Thanks very much Phillip. Glad you enjoyed it
Enthralling Explore. So interesting. These old steps looked amazing. Superb filming ad always. Cemetery fascinating. Well done and thank you. Ps. Can’t forget to mention your music.
Nah then, ey up me duck. Glad you found Bob's Rock 👍🙂 The three rocks of Nottinghamshire are Hemlock Stone which you know, Bob's Rock and then the Druids Stone at Blidworth.
Cheers buddy. Hemlock is on the list I just need something to accompany it to make it worthwhile 👍
We went to the cemetery today from the Baulk Lane side and into the woods looking around, but was very wet and slippy so never actually went down far enough to see Bob's Rock. But watching this i've a better understanding of how to get there now.
The weather wasn't very nice today at all. Hopefully you'll get to visit it soon
@@TrekkingExploration We went back again today and found it thanks.
@@sstaggat brilliant 🙂
@@TrekkingExploration Went for a walk up Bramcote Hills earlier today as well. Can still recognise most of it c",?)
Great video. That cemetery building is reminiscent of a Medieval Gate House.
Thanks William. It's lovely isn't it?
Great and interesting video, thanks for sharing
Interestingly enough, Bob's Rock reminds me so much of Hermits Cave at Dale Abbey. Cracking video, Antony! 👍
Thanks very much. I shall be up that way soon 🙂
Stunning. Love your content, keep coming back.
Thanks so very much David 🙂
This one threw me, I wasn't expecting another upload already and nearly missed it. Thanks Ant, this is quite a bit different form the other stuff you've covered.
Thanks Jon. Glad you enjoyed it.
Hey Antony. That was so exciting, you did a brilliant job. The Cemetery & grounds have not changed much since the 70s/80s when I grow up there..I learnt alot from you too. My Secondary school was Bramcote Park school so we were rivels. Hahaha. I think you missed the main part of standing on the huge rock looking over Stapleford. Above the Ford Dealership Sandicliffe. So my guess is that this is the largest in Sandstone in Nottingham. (I could be wrong).
Beautiful building, and cemetery. Yeah BMX Bikes go off that ramp. Those mounds are big. Looks like kids are still using them. Thanks for the video
Cheers Johnny. Thanks for watching 🙂
This is brilliant. Thank you.
Thanks very much John. Glad you enjoyed it
A good video of The Mystery of Bobs Rock & The Enchanting Cemetery - Nottingham!👍👍
Thanks for watching Michael 🙂
What a lovely church and cemetary,i never heard of Bobs Rock before, great video again Ant,xx
It's a lovely place. Glad you enjoyed it 🙂
Great explore, Bob's Rock was fascinating and the cemetery looked a very peaceful place
Glad you enjoyed it. It's a lovely little place 🙂
Hermits cave near dale abbey is a very similar structure and also has an interesting history.
Agree with others that the Hemlock Stone will be the largest. I've been past the Druid's stone near Blidworth which is pretty big and sits out nicely in the landscape- can't quite say if its bigger or not than Bob's rock as I've not visited Bob (yet!). I walked past Roche Abbey ruins this weekend - they could make a good video for you especially if you are allowed to use your drone.
Thanks Ant, that is an intriguing spot. You take care.
Thanks Christine, much appreciated 🙂
Congratulation on another great video.Well done Ant.👍
Thanks very much 😃
Nice video. Somewhere I never went to either when I was also raised locally.
How about doing a visit to the nearby Hemlock Stone?
if you made your way to the end of the earth and the most inaccessible place possible, you would always find an old shopping trolley Ant, thought you knew that! Same sandstone as Bramcote I think and Dale abbey cave as well. Both places Neolithic and very eerie. First time I have ever seen that area in my life or even ever heard of it and i have lived near there all of my life.
Very interesting, thank you. However, I was a bit thrown by the description of the cemetery windows as "Art Deco". I believe that style is called "Gothic Revival". The Art Deco movement started in the 1920s; the windows at Stapleford cemetery are based on a design popular in medieval times.
Well done, will certainly go and look at this one. The biggest rock has to be Hemlock Stone, have you done a video on it ?
Thanks for watching 🙂 I went when I was a child however not filmed yet. I certainly shall do
Hemlock stone is another Mountain biking place so be careful if you venture up to the top past the actual stone
Nice views 🙂🚂🚂🚂
The entrance building will have been a Church of England chapel on one side and a Non-conformist chapel on the other. Looks like , as with most other cemetreries they are disused. I suspect the one still having a door will be a tool store for cemetery grounds maintenance.
Lived in Beeston all my life and never knew that was there 😁 Hemlock Stone has to be one of the larger stones?
We have lived in Beeston all our lives never knew this was under our noses, thanks Bob.
Thanks for watching 🙂 Yes I believe Hemlock is the largest. I'll do that eventually
Have you ever done a video on The Hemlock Stone at Bramcote Hills?
Mistitled- this is Stapleford - 6 miles from Nottingham. The walk to the top is Lovers's Walk which leads eventually to Bramcote.
Yes I know it's Stapleford as I mentioned it in the video a few times. It's still Nottingham? Definitely not Derby or Derbyshire 🤔
@@TrekkingExploration Nottinghamshire but not Nottingham. Or in local Stabbo. It's Notts mi duck but not Notts, thus adding to the confusion.
@@Megalobatrachus Yeah I've heard it called Stabbo or Stabbyfud - not sure if it is as rough as people make out?
I see in the comments a few people mentioning the Hermits Cave at Dale Abbey, not something i know of but.... Bobs rock does remind me of Hairy Bobs Cave on Marine Drive Scarborough at the cliff base below the castle.....
Interesting video where abouts in stapleford is this? Can you do a video on Bramcote?
Hi Michael. It's just off the main Nottingham Road in Stapleford. It's behind the Ford dealership Sandicliffe. Cemetery Road It's just past this. (Travelling towards the town centre from Bramcote)
Please visit the hermits cave Dale Abbey
That is pencilled in for a sunny day in the next few weeks 🙂
Great location, but how sad to see so much litter, seems very disrespectful to Bob. :-(
I know, it's quite an eyesore for what could be a lovely historical spot
Bob's Rock is actually named for my brother - Bob - who was born in 1932, so it's really not that old.
You trying to get a job filming the next harry Potter movie? Jeeze the MTB boys have had a great time at Bobs rock. Looks like there may have been an archeological dig there at some time with a great set of jumps built over them..
It's a tranquil yet eerie little place. Nestled away beautifully. Thank you for watching
Yes, it's definately a mountain bike track. He obviously doesn't watch Sam Pilgrim, Tom Cardy or Kara Beal.
💯💯💯
Have you seen Dale caves near Dale Abbey, Ant? Perhaps not as interesting as Bobs rock, but still with a story to tell. And of course there's the remains of Dale Abbey just on the edge of the village.
Hi Ged. Thanks for watching. I do have the abbey and the little caves on my list to do. I'm awaiting for a clear blue sky day 😃
@@TrekkingExploration Are these the caves known as The Hermitage - dug out by a divinely inspired baker from Ilkeston in the 12th century? Was there last weekend and can still recall the plaque description lol.
@@jimg9820 yes that's them 🙂
i live in stapleford
Nice little town 👍
Great vid Ant. These sort of sandstone outcrops erode into fantastic other worldly shapes wherever they occur and with a little help from humans sometimes form useful pre-industrial age work areas, quarries stone mines or metal mines ie like Alderley Edge in Cheshire. Bobs rock put me in mind of a Martin Zero vid filmed in Stockport on the Mersey valley river cliffs. link here... ua-cam.com/video/dX-L2X9j2nA/v-deo.html . Note Stockport also has second world war shelters tunneled out of the sandstone also in the Mersey valley.
Thank you for watching Kevin. I love stuff like this and I'll try to find more similar locations
For Almighty Bob, see Hitchhikers' Guide to the Galaxy!
How sad: let’s say it for what it is. The council or cemetery trust have abandoned that lovely building and are allowing it to rot it appears. Boarded up and falling apart.
