Hi Twilla,I wish you the best of luck with your clematis seeds,I currently have some clematis seeds in my fridge waiting to be planted,I will try the same methods you have shown ,it will be interesting to see the results.Best wishes.Alan
Hi Alan-- thank you for your good wishes for my clematis adventures. I am sad to report that I have not had any sprouts yet. I am not surprised. The gardener who gave me the seeds shared that others have tried and failed with this particular variety. I think if I try again, I'll try a different medium. I'll also try soaking and scarifying the seed. I'll also try germinating some at a cooler temperature, as these were in a pretty warm location once they came out of my fridge. It's fun to experiment and I haven't given up yet. The seeds might just the sort that like to take their time! (Perhaps this is wishful thinking, but I'm an optimist. 😀 Good luck with your clematis seeds! I wish you oodles of new plants!
@@twillamacleod5044 Hi Twilla, thanks for the reply,I wonder what the chances of germination would be if the seeds were in their natural setting, quite small probably,I think experimantation is the name of the game with these seeds.I would be interested to know the rate of success from others who have grown clematis from seed, however ,I never seem to see any results anywhere,if you come across any videos on here showing the results please publish them here.Good luck.Alan
Sara you have great timing! I am going to do an update on this experiment, hopefully this weekend. I had three Lone Pine clematis come up and I am nursing them along this summer. All three were from the batches I put in the fridge, so for this clematis, cold seems to be important. If I do this again next year I'm also going to nick the seed and break the hard outer coating, as suggested by @tomkochan8134 below. Have fun and good luck! Happy Gardening!
Hi Twila! Beginner gardener here Can I plant clematis in seed starting soil and under a grow light like you do with planting veggies or do I HAVE to cold stratify them and if so, how long do you keep them in the fridge? Love your optimism!! Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us!! Happy gardening to you and everyone else watching this video! ~Cindy Zone 8A
Hi Cindy-- Thanks so much for your question about growing clematis seed. I am not an expert on this, but I did have luck with two native species, so I thought I would give the seeds in the video a try. I had two groups of them in the fridge, one at 4 weeks and the second at 2 months. I also sowed some of the seeds and didn't cold stratify them. Guess what... so far... this time around... no action. I think I might see one tiny bit of green coming up in the group thY was in the fridge for four weeks. Fingers crossed its not just my imagination. Haha. If it is a sprout, it's about 8 weeks since the seed came out of the fridge. All this aside, I see you are in zone 8A. Lucky you! I'm in Zone 4A, so clematis here (the one in the video is an alpine one) has to be okay with some serious winter. Maybe the variety you are growing doesn't expect the cold in the same way... I would do some in the fridge for 4 weeks if you are worried about it and some just sown like your veggies, without cold. It may take a long time for them to come up. Also, the two kinds I've had luck with took a few years to produce flowers, so be prepared to wait, I think. Good luck! Thanks for watching and I'm glad you are enjoying the videos.
give them a nick like you would morning glory..paper towel germinate ..don't let it dry out.check daily.when they puff up.plant them in your prepared spot.you seem to over think this..don't! it's supposed to be fun.why complicate things?..good luck have fun 😊
Hi Tom -- thanks for the tip. I actually didn't think to try nicking them. I only had three come up in my grand experiment, so if I try again, I will try that. The seed is very hard, so this makes sense! Hope your gardening season is going great and thanks again for the suggestion!

Any progress on your seeds? I haven't tried either way yet, hoping for some tips before I do anything with my seeds. Thank you!!!
