  • It's my weird hobby to haul studio mics around the drum corps lots. This year in Denton TX I got really lucky to witness the Crusaders warm up in a beautifully quiet corner near the Apogee stadium. Lovely echo and almost no battery bleed from the drumline warmups nearby. Very pleased with the recordings I was able to capture of this magnificent hornline!
Recorded on a stereo pair of Schoeps MK4s

Finally, a video that actually serves as a decent representation for what it sounds like in person. That MK4 doing god’s work

Fun story about this: the brass bus broke down on the way to the show and we weren't sure we were going to make it. The brass was about 45 minutes to an hour late because we had the percussion bus drop off at the show site then turn around to pick up the stranded brass members. We ended up having no visual warmup and our brass warmup cut down as well. Even with that, this ended up being one of our best placements of the season!

Just love the bari section with how the harmonies seem so equal in volume.

If only the published DCI videos sounded this good.

Even as a relatively new person to this activity (became a diehard fan during the COVID-19 summers), I’ve come to realize that a lot of the conversation surrounding DCI is somewhat negative. I guess that’s what happens when you have a half-century old activity who’s only constant is extreme change. Whether it be a vocal minority or the general consensus, I had somewhat bought into the sentiment that DCI would be better off as it was in the early 2000’s. However, the sequence at 7:04 reminded me why I fell in love with the activity. As long as there is chest rattling, eargasm inducing, melt-your-face off moments like these, I will follow drum corps. I cannot wait to hear this in person. Eat ‘em up Boston!

Welcome! Drum corps really is an impressive thing, and it's always great to hear that new people are being introduced to it. Just out of curiosity, do you have any experience with playing in marching or concert/symphonic band? Like did you play an instrument in school? Or is this something that's totally new to you?

Oh yeah, I was in marching band for three years and concert band for seven years. It was right after our COVID ruined year that I heard about “that show where they kill the drum major” (lol Sparticus still is my favorite show). Thus started my dive into the deep rabbit hole that is DCI, and I haven’t left it since!!

Love to audio! These days, this the clearest you can hear a hornline without having to compete with audio equipment pushing 1000+ wats. Boston’s brass is 🔥🔥

I was just thinking the same thing. The support from the tubas is SICK. and the openness of the entire hornline is just so great.

My only problem with the closer is that it’s not long enough

Missing the summer, always find my way back to this video to again feel what it is like to stand in front of the arc. Thank you for posting this.

I am visiting a lot of shows this season but probably won't have a chance to record anyone else in the lot sadly. I did get to record Phantom at Denton and will post them as well at some point

4:45 ear piecing overtones. can hear them resonating in the microphone all the way up the harmonics well past the lead sop
