Its made pretty clear throughout the show in various storylines that Mickey and Ian love each other unconditionally. Its clear they both took the ‘for richer for poorer for better or worse in sickness and in health’ thing seriously long before they were married. But this storyline in particular really showcases that there’s nothing Ian could do that could make Mickey love him less. Mickey’s only concern is that Ian is safe happy and healthy. He doesn’t have time to even be mad at ian for anything including taking his baby he just needs to get him help. We have other moments in the show where Ian does this for Mickey as well but its pretty hard to watch this storyline in particular and not come to the conclusion that Mickey’s in this for life. Its why in s10 when Mickey and Ian are getting married and Ian has been on medication, taking of himself and stable for years and asks Mickey if hes sure he wants to marry someone with Bipolar disorder Mickey looks him so annoyed like have I not made myself clear over the years. Ian I don’t think any part of you could make him love you less. This love story is brutal and heartbreaking but damn do they ever love each other its my favourite thing about this show.

yeah, people get on ian's ass for breaking up with him at the end of s5, even though he thought he was doing it for mickey. he thought mickey would be better off :( he loves mickey so much, he can't get him off his head.

Yeah! It pretty hard to watch those scenes, and the video doesn't even show all the manic episodes Ian goes through throughout the entire series, some before the diagnosis some after, even him considering unaliving himself for a hot min.
I'm glad at the end he was given a happy ending next to the only person he truly loved and the only one who loved him back and despite him having doubts about being worthy of love. It shows people with mental illnesses can live a normal life, but it takes effort, patience, and it helps if there's someone willing to help you along the way.

For how comedic the show is they surprisingly depicted mental illness very very well and took the subject very VERY seriously with Karen's mom Sheila's agoraphobia or the bipolar representation in Monica and Ian. This isn't a thing that shows really do ever... especially not more comedic shows.
It's still kind of blows my mind how much research it's clear the writers did regarding both of those mental illnesses to be honest... I can't really speak to the bipolar representation but people who do have the disorder have said that it's very good representation...I am diagnosed with agoraphobia( + Social and Generalized anxiety disorder) and while I don't relate to every single one of Sheila symptoms... as symptoms of mental illness can vary person-to-person, sometimes. especially with phobias. I can still relate to some of her experience and I still know that a lot of other people who are diagnosed with agoraphobia may be able to relate to her symptoms more. And I think that they depicted the paralyzing fear that does come with the disorder in a very real way. I can relate to disappointing family members when you're unable to do something everyone else can do. And feeling like a burden. I can also relate to attempting exposure therapy and then something happening outside... and kind of being pushed all the way back to square one. It's very frustrating to experience that backslide in exposure because to get to that initial point in it is indescribably difficult and takes months and months of work sometimes years(obviously they speeded up a little bit because it's a TV show but IRL it often takes years of work). But her character definitely gives me hope. One day I can get to where she ends up in the show. Even though I honestly can't imagine being in that place...
