- A container ship rammed into a major bridge in Baltimore early Tuesday, causing it to snap and plunge into the river below. Several vehicles fell into the chilly waters, and rescuers were searching for survivors.
Two people were rescued from the waters under the Francis Scott Key Bridge, one in serious condition, according to Baltimore Fire Chief James Wallace. He said authorities “may be looking for upwards of seven people” but said that number could change. It was not clear if the two rescued were included in the seven.

My sister works for EZ Pass. I just got off the phone with her. She told me it’s diesel and fuel all in the water and one of the contract companies they have was doing some routine maintenance when it collapsed and so far they have only located 7 cars underwater

The Maritime Commission failed
The ship lost power just minutes before the impact. The power was restored once momentarily but was lost again. There wasn't sufficient time for the Emergency power and even if it did come on it only powers one of the steering motors not the Main Engine.
Vsl this big has strong momentum and without ME it would be nearly impossible to bring her under control.
There were local Pilots onboard the ship at the time of the incident and in my experience these are highly trained pilots who would have done everything in their power to avoid this.
It's just a very unfortunate accident.
We should ban boats.

It’s wild how I live in Pensacola and the Pensacola Bay Bridge collapses from a hurricane. And I grew up just outside of Baltimore, and now the Francis Scott Key Bridge collapses. These are the 2 bridges I have been on the most times in my life.

@@michaelwalsh9145 Yes, I do. The bridge is 50 years old with concrete supports constantly exposed to salt water. Microscopic fissures in the concrete would expose the underlying steel supports to the salt water as well, which could lead to weakening of the structure. I'm sure that the NTSB will be examining the inspection and maintenance records to determine if all necessary repairs were up to date.
@@cate9540 I’m sure it was properly maintained over the years just like any other bridge, you’re very gullible if you believe that they just ignored the structure of the bridge after building it even small bridges in my local town that were built in the 1600’s are maintained yearly, big trucks cross them bow compared to horse and carts when the were built.

Who was the architect that designed that bridge? Are you kidding me He hits one abutment and an entire bridge collapse something's wrong with the design of that bridge.
That bridge was built in 1972, long before overloaded container ships became the norm. Designers can plan for a lot of adverse events, but it's difficult to anticipate how things can change 50 years into the future.
Passing blame? Why are you playing defense for those idiots? Entire ship crew should be arrested, tested and held until they find who's responsible. Asleep at the wheel? Drunk? Negligence?

Just like now they're finally are realizing they have to build bridges especially in areas that have high winds such as tornado ridden states and hurricane ridden states. They're now altering on their designs and the materials they use to withstand certain disasters. Such as the bridge up in Michigan several years ago and Bridges over by the Great lakes that have happened because of inclement weather and high winds. And no preventive maintenance.

Given the tonnage of a fully loaded cargo ship, that could have been a brand new bridge and it wouldn't have withstood a hit like that.

the ship lost power. no way to maintain control over heading without power. doesnt matter if you have control over the rudder or not. and if you had actually been underway for any part of your "navy career" you would have a good understanding of how much distance and time it takes a very large container ship to come to a complete controlled full stop. and you if you had actually ever been underway, you would know that a narrow transit would be the worst place possible to go dead ship, and you would also already know that there would have been a pilot on board the vessel as well, but since your navy career was spent as what we Marines call a "POG" you wouldnt know that.

NO bridge is going to survive a direct impact with a Fully-loaded Merchant vessel weighing OVER HALF A MILLION TONS. The amount of Force directed at a SINGLE point of impact....the Physics are mind-boggling....It takes a LOT of force to destroy the embedded foundational support of a Bridge like that....but again, NO Bridge is designed to take THAT impact and survive...
Francis may not be as solid as those you find in Florida, but Baltimore isn't subject to the Hurricane force winds and the storm surge tidal waves of Florida either. So the design considerations are reasonable for Francis NOT to have the support structure of Florida's Skyway Bridge.
And yet, even the Skyway Bridge in Florida with completely solid, reinforced foundations is NOT going to survive something like this. There is NO POINT in designing a Bridge to survive something like this, because it's near FUTILE....you'd end up bankrupting the State spending Billions of dollars, paying for it over DECADES, to build something the size of China's Three-Gorges Dam that would have to LITERALLY survive an impact with a force greater than multiple Mother-of-all-bombs.
What would be the point of starving your own people of funds, in order to fail at building an "unbreakable bridge"?
(An "Unbreakable Bridge" is like the "Perpetual Motion Machine" and "Global Cooling-Warming-Climate-Change" - they're ideas for people who failed Highschool Physics)

11.5 million vehicles cross it every year. That's an average of 30 vehicles on it at any given time. But it was off peak hours so probably 15-20 vehicles when it was hit which would suggest probably 20-30 people.
Thank God it was after midnight.

@@joshuabrown9413 yep yep, a long long time ago. A large shop crossing I believe in heavy fog, they ran into the middle of it and the whole thing split and fell apart in the water. You can still fish off the old bridge, well what's left of it of course. And they rebuilt the new one to be taller and have lights. Unfortunately now it's so tall ,as you probably know, they have to shut the bridge down for high winds lmao
