- Is this BRAND NEW $40 mic a RODE KILLER?
I’d have to say…No.
$40 Shotgun Mic VS Rode VideoMic Pro | Comica CVM-V30 Lite
DISCLAIMER: This is an unbiased review. Comica sent me the microphone and asked for a review but I am NOT being paid to upsell this product to you.
This is the Comica CVM-V30 Lite microphone. It costs $39.99 on Amazon and can be plugged into your DSLR or your smartphone to record better audio.

In this video, I test and review this microphone using my Nikon D3300, my smartphone, and the Zoom H1 so you can hear a variety of example to hopefully give you a clear idea of this microphone’s recording capabilities. This mic is has a similar build of a Rode VideoMic Pro but with watered down features like the Rode VideoMicro.
I also show you guys a quick trick in Premiere Pro of how to boost
your audio levels without simply increasing the volume.
My final thoughts are that it sounded pretty good with my smartphone and with the Zoom H1. When plugged into the Zoom the microphone sounds pretty similar to the Rode so that’s the upside of it.
With my Nikon, there was an underlying hiss that I wasn’t thrilled about. It’s a quiet microphone so you’ll have to do some work on it in post. If you’re on a tight budget, you can get this mic but definitely plug it into an external recorder or your phone.

Thanks for the info! The preamp in the H1 allows it to now have the mic work over and supply it with enough gain. That's why it took care of the hiss. Usually, in DSLRs, the preamp inside the camera sucks ass.
Thanks for commenting, Christopher! And yeah, never trust those DSLR preamps lol. And I'm still surprised by how much the H1 improves the audio of whatever you plug into it :)
Thank you for the Premiere audio tip!
The trick you did in premiere pro is really not a trick. It's very basic, but thanks for showing it to us
Hahah like for the animated character behind the mic.
Hissing. I hear this in your, the trird or the fourth review, so I am choosing now between the PRO version and CVM VM10II. Thank you for the info:)
Thanks! Yeah, the hissing was a downside. I still like the Pro but I've also moved into using lav mics more lately. It ultimately depends on what works best for you. Thanks for commenting!
@@NerdLensStudios I eventually chose CVM VM10II because thehissing is almost the same level but this guy is really smaller, you know. What are the lav mics? Is there anything worthy under 50$? Thank you too:)
I liked the video a lot. Nice info... I'm watching every video I can find about this mic and it's obvious that the quality is not a "Rode VideoMic Pro killer" but for the price sure is a killer to every other mic of about the same price (from brands like Movo, Boya, Neewer or even the Rode VideoMic Go).
Thanks for commenting and I'm glad it helped. Yeah, the price is the main thing I liked about this mic. Ultimately, it comes down to your personal preference and budget. Maybe plugging it into an external recorder like a Zoom will help improve the sound. I'm sure you'll figure out what works best and come up with a better solution that I hadn't considered :) Good luck!
@@NerdLensStudios After reading your response I ended up learning more about this topic and after some research now I'm planning to buy one of those PreAmps that mount on top the DSLR itself (That should boost the gain without the annoying hiss and record the audio directly to the camera). I do lot's of "Run and gun" work and for press conferences and street interviews, I think it's gonna to be a nice and fast solution. Thank you for responding. Wish you the best.
Awesome! And great idea! Zoom just came out with the H1n and B&H have a special promotional price for it. But any kind of preamp will definitely help keep out hissing. But I'm all about run and gun too so, like you, I prefer fast and simple solutions haha. Thanks for the kind words
Yeah the $40 is for sure how I'd be tempted to purchase the mic had I not watched your video. At 2:44 that's all I needed to hear to pass on the comica. Thx for the great info!
Hey Anthony! Great to hear from you and thanks for commenting. glad the audio tests helped out :) Yeah, I was really hopeful for this mic but it wasn't a strong competitor. I'm really interested in trying MOVO microphone which functions exactly like this one and the Rode VideoMicro at a similar price.
Hey, great video! For future reference, the batteries were to amplify the sound. So that the mic didn't have to rely on the camera's amp. This is probably why the phone fared better than the camera. Again, nice video. Thanks!
Thanks for commenting, Ethan! And for the sub! You make a really good point, but this model didn't come with any batteries, not even in the box. It was only powered by the camera or the phone. I know there's a regular V30 model which is supposed to be battery-powered though.

Thanks for the trick
No problem! Thanks for commenting!
This review is so detailed! Thank you so much!
Thank you, I'm glad it helped! Appreciate the comment :)
actually just ordered this to try on a smarphone first. then with a camera.
If it does well, I might not get the zoom h1n anymore :) Thanks for the review !
p.s: You sound so bubbly , hope you continue to do these reviews !
Thank you Khalid! Appreciate your comment! Depending on the camera you have, this mic does pretty well, especially because newer camera models are improving the internal microphones. I just went back and tested this mic with my Lumix G7 (at 0dB) and it was much louder than I expected. Since I was still about 2 feet away from the camera, there was a lot of echo from the room, but the floor noise wasn't bad and i didn't have to make any adjustments in editing.
As always, it depends on what works best for you and your projects so I hope this mic works out for you! Best wishes :)
Thanks for the video,, keep up the good work.
Thank you! Appreciate the comment and hope the info was useful to you! :)
