- KINGSLEY NORTH -
Kingsley North is a lapidary store in Michigan's U.P. They make a great cab machine and sell many other brands too. They have a huge selection rough rock, tumblers, grit, jewelry supplies etc. at good prices. I buy most of my coarse grit from here in 45 lb. bags. It's the best price I have found. If you buy using the following link, I make a small commission.

I've heard you say this in another video, but I do appreciate you demonstrating. It does help alleviate the anxiety I used to feel when watching you grind small pieces on this saw.
Glad to help, Dan. I was getting too many comments from people worried about me.
You forgot to add at the end "this public service announcement brought to you by Michigan Rocks!" ;-)
At least I didn't make any geology mistakes in this one! Every time I make a video using this saw, someone comments that I'm going to cut my finger off, so I thought I'd make a video to calm them down.
@@MichiganRocks Looking at some of the above comments, I don't believe it worked...

Thanks for the demo. I won’t cringe anymore when you use the diamond blade.
Mission accomplished!

That was interesting, but brought back a table saw injury when I was am EMT. White uniform shirt, bloody hand print on my back. So glad you know your equipment! Everyone....read your manuals when it comes to power tools! Be like Rob!!!
Maybe not be like Rob and keep your fingers off all of the blades. I don't normally touch any of them, but I do get way closer with this saw than with my table saw.
The more you know...💫
Nice PSA, Rob! 👌
Thanks, Tina.
It’s the worlds fastest fingernail file. Amazing how it will cut through rock, but not fingers.
Convenient too!
Thanks for recommending I watch this. Whew, okay I can definitely relax now.
Sorry if I implied you were unsafe in any way and kudos to eye, ear, and respiratory protection.
I’m so impressed you took the time to answer and make these recommendations. Thank you. Wonderful channel. Wish I lived in the US and could visit the shop you mentioned. Would love to give a stone turtle a caring home (though you’re right, they are likely happier where they came from 😊)
I get comments like your original one a lot, so it made sense to just make a video rather than typing responses all the time.
Thumbs up! Both of them. Thank you diamond saw!

Nice demonstration !!! I wonder if any one still makes that style of saw where the center of the blade is close to being at the level of the table, for cutting out shapes like you do. I have seen diamond band saws in catalogs also.
I don't know if anyone makes a saw like this, but they should. The disadvantage is that you can't cut really big slabs with it.

very good information. What the maker o your saw?
It's a GemLap. I have heard that they were made in the sixties by a company in Ferndale, Michigan. They are no longer in business.
I can now watch the cutting videos with much less anxiety, 😆
Good! That was my goal.
Who double-dog-dared you to do that test? Loved this -- great educational spot.
The same guy who got me to lick the flagpole. I should have known better after that.
The first time seeing you tapping the saw made me wince and curl my fingers, until you didn't get any cuts. I was suprised and said " Wait, what??" I hope you don't slip while cutting them rocks with water going on them.
I have never cut myself in any way when using a rock saw. I don't usually touch the blade, but I'm not concerned if I do.
What is the brand name of that saw? Thanks, I really enjoy watching your videos.
GemLap. They're not made anymore.
This is good to know, I ve been thinking of getting into lapidary work... I'm a woodworker, and I actually did cut my right index finger off on my table saw about four months ago...worst thing I've ever been through, and saws of any kind make me pretty nervous now, so I've been looking into other hobbies... Plus this hobby would give me a good excuse to visit a bunch of beautiful places in our great state. Not gonna lie, watching you use that saw in the past few months always made me cringe, now I can watch you slab rocks instead of getting creeped out. Just a word to everyone, always follow your proper safety procedures, no matter how confident you are or how many times you've done it in the past, accidents can happen in a split second.
I'm surprised that you even clicked on this video after that experience. My table saw is something I treat with respect. It still makes me nervous sometimes. Thanks for the reminder that accidents really can happen.
You had a from, serious look on your face! Thanks for the saw safety video!
My giant eyebrows make me look like that a lot.
As you were bouncing your finger on the blade, I was thinking "His finger tip is gonna come flying out of there." Happily it didn't. nice demo!
Boy, that would have been exciting though.
@@MichiganRocks Exciting? I guess...it's your finger!! I don't believe you would thing that way if your finger tip did detach! OWWW! followed by a string of expletives. I know. I cut my thumb on my table saw 5 years ago. Luckily it didn't cut it off but it wasn't good. It didn't go deep enough to hit bone but it still needed surgery.
@@markreetz1001 Yeah, that's enough to ruin your whole day.
Nice Video, well done. Can you use a segmented diamond blade for doing lapidary work? or are those more for cement? Thanks.
I'm not sure. All of my blades are continuous. Some of the larger saws might use segmented blades, but I'm not sure about that either. I wouldn't want to use a segmented blade because I think it would be more likely to chip the rocks the way I use them. I also wouldn't want the danger.
@@MichiganRocks Thank you, I kind of thought so too but was not 100%.
while you were touching the saw blade i was thinking " that looks a lot safer than the razer sharp blade on my whittling knife i sliced my finger with a couple of days ago. or the hook knife i scalped the side of my thumb with this past august."
Sounds like you need a carving glove. I don't carve, but I know they make a glove that will protect your fingers.
@@MichiganRocks i should buy one, i just haven't gotten around to it. the only time i hurt myself carving is when i try to make spoons. i think the universe is trying to send me a sign. lol
@@KaneLouiseOconnor SPOONS BAD!! Stop making spoons!
@@MichiganRocks i will till i get a cet resistant glove, and when all the snow is gone so i can gather more wood for whittling.
I have a wet tile saw but my diamond gray blade looks different, assuming it’s segmented as you said? I have so many questions but don’t really know anyone in the rockhound industry to ask!
Segmented just means that there are notches around the blade. A great place to learn about lapidary stuff and to ask questions is the Rock Tumbling Hobby forums. There are a lot of very knowledgable people there who are great about answering questions. forum.rocktumblinghobby.com
Aaaah she screamed!😱
She did?
Mr Rob you're awesome is there a brand name or manufacturers name for that saw???
Yes, it's a GemLap. They were made in Ferndale Michigan in the sixties I think. This saw is probably about as old as I am. I was also made in the sixties.
Great advice. Thank you. No, I don’t have a saw to cut rocks. 😊
Well, if you get one, you'll know just a little more about it.
Was I the only one to cover my eyes when Rob did that ???? lol The saws I use would remove digits so that was hard to watch at first :)
It's important to keep in mind which saw I am using. I have push sticks for the wood saw.
Where do you sell your jewelry?
I don't sell much jewelry. I have a few things for sale at a local shop called "Olivet Book and Gift". olivetbookandgift.com
How do you change the saw blade
The top of the saw comes off. There's a nut holding the blade off. I just remove the nut, replace the blade and put the nut back on. It's pretty straight forward. Some shafts have reverse threads, I think, so if you're having a hard time removing yours, try going the other way.
The whole time I was still super nervous 🤣
Did I get the point across that you don't need to be? I was trying to get people to relax, not to be more nervous.
@@MichiganRocks yes definitely, you did a great job! I just have absolutely terrible anxiety 😅 love the vid tho, so glad you shared this with us!
Where did you get your saw from and how much does it cost? I love your videos and I'm really jealous of the stones that you can find in America. Best wishes from Germany 😊
My wife bought a new chair for our den. The owner of the store delivered it and heard my rock saw running in the garage. He asked if I wanted his old saw that he was no longer using. Of course I gladly accepted. It cost me about $150 to get it running. It’s a GemLap saw that is no longer being made. They were made in Michigan in the sixties.
@@MichiganRocks You were really lucky with that! I have no chance of getting a stone saw for less than 600 € (~ 740 $). It is cheaper to rent one.

@@ingok1991 Thanks Ingo. Your written English is really good. I can't speak German at all, so you're ahead of me!
New saws are very expensive here too. I have four saws and I bought them all used. The old saws were built really well too, so I don't feel like I'm getting inferior saws by buying used.
Rob, I would love a rock saw like that, what make/model is it? Nothing sucks worse than getting a 7” tile saw and only getting 1” cutting depth from it. 😢 That’s what I have, and I can hardly cut anything on it.
This is a GemLap saw from a long time ago. They were made in Ferndale, Michigan, but haven't been made in a long time.
@@MichiganRocks The older equipment is the Best. I have a Sapphire Faceting machine I use as a flat lap. It's ancient, but awesome.

@@MichiganRocks Yes coz this means even i could do what you do! So yes much better :)

What brand saw is that and do u have a link 2 purchase that same wet saw and great video
This is a GemLap, made in Ferndale Michigan in the sixties, from what I've heard. I have another GemLap, a Frantom, and a Lortone ST-10. None of the saws I own are produced anymore. Lortone is still in business, but the smallest saw they make is a twelve inch saw. They don't make a ten inch saw like my ST-10.
New saws are really expensive, and the old ones were made well. Keep your eyes open for a used saw.
@@MichiganRocks thxs
Whew !!!😀😀
Feel better now?
What was the blade called
It's a ten inch MK-303 continuous rim diamond blade.
Can I use a tile saw, it has a diamond blade and water feed?
A lot of people use tile saws to cut rocks.
@@MichiganRocks awesome, at least until I can upgrade. Thank you.
Hi again! Have you ever used an MK 301 blade on a trim saw? I've never been brave enough to try because I can't decide if it counts as a notched blade. I usually use 303's but have been cutting jaspers and agates lately, so I'd love to trim with a 301. Any experience and/or thoughts on this?
I think I have always use 303 blades. What's the advantage of that blade that makes you want to try it? I like the really smooth blades on my trim saw since I cut a lot of shapes and use the side of the blade as a grinder a lot. From there they go right into my Lot-O. So I like to get the edges as smooth as possible on the saw.
The blade on my slab saw has those shallow notches on it. It's a cheap off brand blade.
The 301 is supposed to have a slightly stiffer core, and the diamond edges are a little bit wider. The idea is that it can cut the hard stuff (Mohs 7ish and up) more efficiently because it has more diamonds, and the little notches do a better job of lubricating and cooling. Also, they're supposed to cut the hard stuff faster, so my understanding is that the user can feed the rock into the saw with a little more push.
All that said, I've never actually used one, so all that stuff above could be complete crap! It just sounds like it would be cool when trimming a lot of jasper and friends. The 303 works great for that too, but if I could do it faster, that would be neato!
@@juliecalhoun9279 Seems like there would be more waste too. I'd go to the Rock Tumbling Hobby forums and ask your question. Someone there will be able to help you for sure. forum.rocktumblinghobby.com

OUCH!
I have these comments too pretty often 😄 stop you cut you finfers off. No i dont 😊
Maybe i do my own demo video 👍
If you don't want to make the video, you could always send people to this one.
I have spent 100’s if not thousands of hours on various diamond blades. When free handing small pieces or thinning something and it shears its breaks and you are putting pressure. Then hit the blade with force you will get a groove burned into your skin. Also e careful not to get an article if clothing sleeve or glove caught it will pull you in. Or if you are holding a rock and it binds and grabs pulling whatever you are cutting fast and violently a dull blade is dangerous also.
Thanks Jonny. I don't typically touch the blade just for the fun of it. I do get my fingers close in some of my videos and get a lot of comments from people worried about my fingers. I thought it would be good for people to see that it's not the same as a wood saw.
Just like a tile wet saw
It's similar, but from what I've heard, tile saws get you really wet. This saw doesn't spray water on me at all. The counter gets wet for about a foot on either side, but the front stays dry.
Correct. You have to keep water in it and in the winter it gets super cold, so we add hot water
Job well done. Your poor finger nail lol 😆
Clipped that right off. Problem gone!
