Thanks for highlighting my country and culture ❤️🇹🇹 well done 👏🏾 our small island has so much talent and history. In addition to: Calypso, Soca limbo etc...We have it all 😊
As a Trinidadian here glad to see the reaction and your thoughts about what you taught it was about. So to answer some questions. I would say that it is many similar events celebrating our heritage and freedom that come together to create the whole that we call Carnival. Carnival is not just the Monday and Tuesday it is Months of celebration before Ash Wednesday. Before the parade of the bands, we have a lot of events that bring together the whole experience. Such as Calypso Monarch, Chutney Soca Monarch, Soca Monarch, Canboulay riots, Stick Fighting and Panorama just to name a few. Within those events, it have both adult and junior categories which involves children from ages 3 to 18 years old. Kiddies Carnival is the Sunday before Carnival Monday. There are a lot of things for people to enjoy during the Carnival period if they are not playing in a band. We have a little bit for everyone.
During slavery the African slaves sang chantwell, which was sung in French Patois. The French settelers loved the beat, but they were protest songs. I would suggest that you listen to Slave by the Calypsonian Mighty Sparrow.
In Trinidad there is a saying that "You must become your costume" That means, for example, if your costume is a police officer, you must imitate the police officer.
We call it Carnival Monday and Tuesday in TnT.. In addition most masqueraders meet their bands fully dressed in their carnival costumes on Carnival Tuesday. In the olden days we would wear par of the costumes on a Carnival Monday afternoon. Now most Carnival bands wear a T shirt and shorts. The African drums were banned yes but it also had to do with the hybrid religon, which was Roman Catholic mixed with African and some Hindu religious tradtions. The first instrument after the ban of African drum was called tamboo bamboo, which is pieces of banboos cut at differnt lenghts. They were hit on the ground, sometime in the 1930's we started with dust bin covers which eventually turned into oil drums. As with anything African it was frowned upon by civil society. However as we became an Independent nation and then a republic state, we Trinibagonias fully accepted the steelpan as ours!
Love this video, carnival is that and so much more, it's a time you just take it to the streets and just let it all out and just leave it there and walk away. Carnival is about dancing having fun with people of all class and race Locals and visitors alike, people who will never give you a second look any other day of the year lol. Thanks guys for highlighting out carnival.
Most carnval bands in Trinidad tell a story. The judges must have a synopsis (a story) in order for the band to get points in "presentation". The ponts are based on Originality Presentation Creativity Spirit Of Carnival (that is dancing) Visual Impact
When you go Trinidad and Tobago for Carnival, bring your energy and prepare for fun, all day along. You don't have play mas to jump up in a band. So bring your A game.
Great show guys, not sure if you know but there's and Trinidadian by the name of Peter minshall he came before mr mc farlene also he did a lot in your production when you had your Olympics in New Orleans,he was the king of the Mas costumes before he retired, check him out.
As a Trini I have been to Mardi Gras. Think of a tree ... We share the roots, the trunk and the branches went of in different directions. Advice, get your cardio in months before you arive in T&T!
Mardi Gras and Caribbean Carnival are the same thing. It all comes from the blend of French Colonial influence mixed with African slave culture. Carribean, Louisiana it's the same.
• I know a guy who was heading home with his friends after classes but they decided to fall in behind a music truck (near City Gate). By the time they got out they were on the other side of Port Of Spain (west, end of St. James). You don't notice! Once the vibes hit you, off you go! • costume design isn't what it used to be. There were vibrant costumes that told stories, now it's bikini/draws and beads. No hate, writing facts. Shame is almost out the window, some women come out in body paint only. • Soon legislation will pass officially declaring the Steel Pan as our national instrument!
The second part is not completely true. We still do the stories that is on carnival Monday and Tuesday in the morning before pretty mas on tuesday and Monday wear on Monday. The queen and king costumes also tells a story
so for the carnival season....although the main finale event is Carnival Monday and Tuesday....Keep in mind that the entire carnival period is a month prior. In the month prior there are different celebrations and different shows (including children parades, calypso competition, fetes -meaning parties, stick fighting, jamette carnival, canboulay riot re-enactments, steel pan competitions, etc.) leading up to the finale days of Jouvert Carnival Monday (usually early morning around 3am to 6 am) , and then pretty mas starting the same Carnival Monday but at 6 am, which continues straight onwards to Carnival Tuesday, which ends around 11pm. The Wednesday afterwards is known as Ash Wednesday, given to the country as a National Holiday and which is mostly recognised by the Catholic community (keep in mind also that the % of Catholics is very high amongst those in the nation).
Thank you , 🤗💯🍹 ya,all have not seen half of our carnival yet and would you believe that today Trinidad and Tobago has the best carnival on earth 🌍🤩✈ people travel from all ends of the world to come into Trinidad just to see it and also play in bands and pay for their customes 🤗🎭🤩 Not even Brazil does it like us .... hope you all visit some day Best time to fly to Trinidad is the month of January so that you actually get a flight because any later u will be stuck with the hundreds of thousands already booked to come to Trinidad ♥️🌍🤗so the earlier the better .
In Rio you have to be part of Samba School. Trinidad and Tobago you just have to purchase your costume to.a band. Nonthe kids are the future to mainyain our culture. Our culture are promoted and thought in schools and home. Its our culture.
If you have not been to a carnival in Trinidad please go and experience. Definitely walk with conformity shoes, meaning sneakers. It is a celebration for all age, everyone is welcome. The parade of the band you can join and dance with the band meaning the crowd of people in costumes but once they reach the judging station all non members have to leave the band, until the clears the judging station or stage.
Also in terms of being able to take part as compared to Rio....anyone can purchase a costume and celebrate mas with a carnival band of their choice(note there are different types of mas bands....the one showcased in this video is more on the traditional side...but there are others that have costumes familiar to those seen in Brazil or Rio). Even some spectators who haven't bought any costumes join bands while on the road and celebrate with bands but at the sidelines. Also... the moko-jumbies aka stilts...when you begin they start you off with a very short stilt so no worries lol, give it a try !
That's only in the sambodromo. There's tons of participation themed things going on in that part of the world during carnival. And that's only in Rio. Other cities have a different style
As to what you said Yes, it isn’t just strutting the street this is what makes us Trinbagonian we are the real Life of Carnival because it’s our culture and heritage from what we gained/ Mocked from our colonizers I love that you guys not just watched the video for views but to gain perspective and understanding/ knowledge of a country other than yours. Note: It’s not Madi Gras for is it’s just plain ole Trinbagonian Carnival
A pretty comprehensive take on Carnival even though the narration is rife with inaccuracies and, in some cases, just plain wrong. From the beginning of Carnival, to the evolution of calypso music, to the genesis of the steel pan, to how and when bands are judged, I feel you would get a better understanding of what you just viewed. If this was overdubbed with accurate narration you'd have a few, "Aha!" moments.
Great video and they still missed a alot of stuff in the documentary, like the must attend fetes(party/concert) they get more intense closer to carnival monday, you could literally party from kiddies carnival sunday straight to jouvert morning
It's very hard to b in a king or queen costume in the Queens Park savannah where this is held as in the night there is a breeze that comes through and can blow down the costume making them fall
You don't actually have to play both jouvert and mas...some persons play mas late monday and all day on Tuesday only and some do jouvert go mas later monday and all day Tuesday. It depends on how serious you are about enjoying the whole carnival 😂
while I understand the Mardi gras reference, it takes away our Trinbagonian heritage as Carnival is not just a day, if you experience it, you will understand why some take offence, there are so many spinoffs of our Carnival in other countries, but nothing compares to TRINBAGO carnival, the narrator, though he did a very good job, clearly is not local and couldn't capture its full essence in this video. We eat, sleep, breathe carnival. It's a Trinbagonian way of life ''like we need blood in we veins, that's how we feel about Port of Spain, ITS CARNAVAL''.
Yeah your right, Rio De Janeiro is the biggest in the world obviously cause Trinidad is small, the only thing though, it's the first and biggest in the Caribbean, now that we shared our culture to the rest of the Caribbean Islands, Miami, Canada, Europe , New York etc... It became famous...

Love this! We now see why you all love it so much.
The steel pan/ steel drum was invented in Trinidad and Tobago by Afro-Trinidadians. The only percussion instrument invented in the 20th century
TELL 'EM!!!
Actually percussion instrument...but you're right.
@@knutt81 I meant to type percussion. Thanks

Carnival is launched 3 months before the actual days of carnival. Mas bands are launched 6 months in advance

We in Trinidad call it Trinidad & Tobago carnival....not Mardi Gras
.... But in essence, it is a Mardi Gras/Shrove Tuesday!
It's actually called Dimanche Gras the king and queen competition. The parade of the bands is just Trinidad Carnival.
But we do have Dimarche Gras in 🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹🇹
Mardi Gras is just Carnival Tuesday.

Best CARNIVAL IN THE WORLD is in TRINIDAD N TOBAGO. Everyone free up yourself and dance in the streets for two days
Thats why its called the greatest show on earth the experience is awesome i love my country TandT
When they said "anyone can join in unlike the carnival in Rio" it's because you have to apply at a Samba School to participate in the parade
Only the sambodromo. There's other participation themed things going on in that part of the world during carnival
It's Trinidad and Tobago Carnival yes 🇹🇹 and even though it is Madi Gras here in Trinidad we do not call it that 😅as Locals

Some carnival characters also have french names, like Dame Lorraine (a female plantation owner). This costume was mainly played by men.
Don't call it Madi Gra. Its Trinidad and Tobago Carnival ❤
Trinidad Carnival is authentic, the events are nonstop! But its seems Mardi Gras and Carnival within the Caribbean are the same.
Mardi Gras actually is with floats and everyone else stands to the side so it isn't the same
