I'm extremely impressed with the thoroughness of this review. I've done a lot of research on the Silverado and Sierra in preparation to purchase one or the other. I've viewed everything from Car and Driver to TFLTruck. You really seem to know your shtuff. I don't believe you stopped talking for the 20+ minute video yet I was listening. Unlike the TFLTruck where I'm looking for the ear plugs!
Because this was facts and usable information. Others try to make a comedy or just jabber with opinions and comments rather than focus on the info and specs we are watching for.
The best review I have seen for the Silverado. I have recently purchased Silverado and it is by far the Quietus car I have ever owned. After driving a thousand miles I am averaging 18 miles to the gallon. I have a Silverado LT crew cab with a 6 and a half foot bed . It is powered by the 5.3 liter engine.
I like the odd square wheel arches. Probably because the early to mid 80's models are one of my all time favorites. It seems to be a throw back to those and the late 70's models. Great videos Alex.
I just wanted to stop by and say that was THE best review of any truck in this segment that I have found. I am a Ram guy and I'm just now looking at the perspectives of other truck people, but I have to say that your review is so professional. I mean, the best that I can say is that the next time around, I'd consider trying a GMC/Chevy strictly on your review. Loved it!
I just bought an old Chevrolet Avalanche 2004. And I have a lot to do! I hope that Silverado 2014 will be my next! Good luck with everything! Greetings from Russia!
hey Alex, I loved the NEW RAM when I first seem the looks and all of it's features. But, I have to say I really like the look of the GM trucks. The square wheel openings I really do like a lot. They had to do something to make it stand out. It is different. And it grew on me. Great Review as always.
thanks a lot for the comparison between these three great trucks, i really liked the idea of showing what model is best for what purpose. I wished that you would include the Toyota Tundra in your comparison, however you made your point that its not a terribly good seller and i agree about that. Thanks for these informative yet fun 23 minutes !
Hi Alex, I like the improved focal lengths you are using for your your shots (...eg. not more wide angle exterior shots.) Also, your microphone looks new. I very much find your voice to more clear with less wind noise this time around. Thank you.
The best improvement about this truck is that GM tuck the wind shield wipers down out of sight. That's what I hated about the old Silverado and Tahoe. Good job GM, attention to detail !
Just FYI. the 4 wheel drive system is not "partial" by any means. There are 4 settings. 2hi, Auto, 4hi, and 4lo. 4hi and 4lo are fully locked 4 wheel drive settings. Auto is similar to a all wheel drive setting in a car, but give primary power to the rear wheels, but when slippage is sensed the front wheels will kick in to give the truck more traction. And the 3 USB ports under the main screen most definitely DO interface with the radio. Overall nice video though.
That was an incredibly thorough review with lots of information but I am late getting here and I'm more interested in the 2016 model now. I know there is a face lift, 8-speed transmission and some inside tech updates but do you have any more info? When can you do a review?
Another outstanding review! I appreciate your practical & technical knowledge of the cars/trucks that you drive for us. Very professional and informative! Since the early '90s, I've owned a full size 1/2 ton pickup, or two, from each of the "big 3". I bought a '13 Ram 1500 crew/short 4x4 laramie back in May of this year. I traded a 2010 Ram 1/2 ton "Sport" that I LOVED for the '13 model purely for the new ZF 8 speed auto. While I miss the sharp monochromatic exterior of my 2010 "bright silver metallic" 1500 sport, the 8 speed gearbox in the new truck complements the HEMI so much better than the previous 6 speed tranny. The only thing that bugs the hell outta me about the new pickup is the tiny manual gear select buttons on the steering wheel spoke. The '14 GC gets paddle shifters and the RAM gets dainty buttons....WHAT THE F@#%?!!! Anyway, hats off to Ford, GM, and Chrysler Group for a really great offering of outstanding new pickups. For me, however, the Ram is the overall winner.
Thanks for the review, but I have to say, people are way too concerned about the details and minute comparisons between these trucks. Face it, it is a luxury to be driving any of these vehicles. They're all trucks and they all do the job. People like one vs another for various reasons, but in the end it comes down to personal taste. I'm sure a dodge ram would do the job I need it to, but I like Silverado because it just seems like more of a "truck's truck" to me, square wheel wells and all. It doesn't bother me that you like the Ram, or that other people like Ford. I'd be lucky to own any of these trucks, and the capability they provide is amazing.
Excellent review. Not a big fan of the square areas either. It really seems that the cab grew more than the bed over the years but I guess it's difficult to see that in a video. So if I understand this, since this truck features a standard bed, you could have a larger bed with a crew cab 1500 Silverado? The interior has improved a lot and looks really comfortable. I guess that we're going to find these new V8 in the 2015 Tahoe, Yukon, Suburban and Yukon XL (5.3), and the Escalade and Yukon Denali (6.2). Seems like their fuel economy will also improve a lot this year.
I use to be a Ford guy til I test drove a Ram 1500 with the hemi.I have never looked backI have a 2010 Ram and love it.last time I test drove a Chevy truck the interior looked dated nice to see the update and now fits in with Dodge and Ford. :)
all vehicles have round wheel cutouts these days. the 73-87 chevy gmc pickups have square wheel cutouts just like these new ones. Cadillac also used square wheel cutouts in the seventies. its an upscale look
Great review, do you have videos where you compare the various trim packages and options within a single model (Crew Cab vs. Double, 1LT vs. luxury package, etc.)
I totally understand your feelings reference the square wheel wells...keep the square body but round for the well. Loving my 2014 Ram 1500 4X4 Laramie with the Hemi!
Hi Alex, I've watched this review and your Denali one (as well as others), great reviews. Do you feel like the crew cab standard bed is too long for suburban use, which would include parking garages? I'm looking at both and am torn on the extra bed length (for weekend warrior/camping/etc use) and the better manoeuvrability with the shorter wheelbase crew cab short bed.
I live in the country but have to parallel park and I find any 4-door pickup just a bit too long for urban and most suburban uses. However, it depends on where you are. In general CA, AZ and TX suburbs are planned a little larger than some other states (especially TX) so it may or may not be an issue. However, trips into downtown areas are a royal pain. Most likely you'd get used to it and it wouldn't be a major problem long term but it will reduce your parking choices.
I completely disagree. I really like the squared wheel arches. It reminds me of the 69 Camaro. It would look stupid with rounded arches. The contrast between the round wheels and the squared arches is very aesthetically pleasing.
Thanks for the review but why don't you have any review vids of the 15/16 models to give details on whether they made the changes to have the 8-speed automatic and how the drive and MPG have changes?
Maybe it would be a good idea if you make an episode about the differences between the Chevy Silverado and the GMC Sierra, just to show what would make customers pay more for the Sierra and whether its really worth the extra money.
You crack me up that people don't cross shop with the Tundra. I sure am and know many have. The Tundra is part of the competition. And it's sales are good. GM and Ford include all their trucks in those sales numbers totals where Tundra is only the Tundra. Good review though as I plan to check this truck out with the 6.2.
The problem is the numbers don't bear that out. Toyota told 1/9th the number of trucks GM and Ford sold separately and Toyota accounted for just 6% of half ton trucks sold in October which has been Toyota's best month. I like the Tundra, check out my review on that, so don't mis-understand me, but the sales aren't there. Also, according to independent market research and Toyota's own research, most pickup buyers don't even cross shop another American brand let alone Toyota.
YTD (at least as of October) Tundra had 91k sales, versus 623k for F150, 555k for Silverado/Sierra and 292k for Ram. That's something, and it's miles closer than the Titan (13k), but still less than 1/3 of the Ram.
hidrotule2001 The funny thing about pickup shoppers seems to be the demographics. The Titan and Tundra sales appear to be almost exclusively step-up sales from compact trucks (any MFG) and very few are conquest sales from another brand. That's not too surprising however since GM/Ford/RAM have very few conquest sales from other American brands either. It's an odd little closed market.
Alex on Autos Trucks buyers tend to stick with whatever brand they know. If there grandfather and/or father drove a ford they probably do too. They are super brand loyal.
Alex on Autos I agree-- a previously Tahoe owner. However, I had an unrelated question; I am also comparo-shopping and just wanted to know about the drive chain: do either Ram or Chevy use Belts or only chains in their drive/engine timing?
although they say that the v6 can only tow 6,400lbswhich isnt true but ive seen them tow much more i know its older but a 05 silverado v6 towed 16000lbs with no breaks on the truck during or after the haul
KING PERFECTION1 The "can it pull" question is separate from the tow rating question. Tow ratings take all manner of things into consideration including braking and the strength of the parking pawl inside the transmission. While any vehicle can pull 2-3x the tow rating, you should always abide by the specification to be safe.
Finally someone who knows wtf they are talking about. And not losing their mind over the garbage ecoboost and love it cause its different. It's a eco car with a truck look. They are not real trucks.
Good Info. He ditch Tundra .lol. I wonder why Tundra doesn't sell. Those halo lamps are not standard in the 2015 1500. I bought mine at a dealer that had over 20 Silverado and only 3 with halo lamps.
Bradson Vogel Supercharging aftermarket is, in general, much easier. I would not be surprised if there was a kit for the 5.3L V8 at some point soon. If one is developed for the V8, I would think a V6 kit should be an easy conversion because of the design similarities. The real question is: what would that do to your engine life? I'm not sure we would know until someone did it.
It seems like factory superchargers are coming back. Honda is making one available for the crz! I'm excited for the next few years and all the amazing cars to come.
+jonathan pierce well I own a ram and it is garbage. ford is great except they are now aluminum bodied trucks (a big no no) in my book. so I'm going to go with chevy. I rarely hear any complaints from Silverado owners.
I recently saw a sierra at an auto show and by no means that im a tall guy at 5' 7" but i felt the seats were so short in this truck, I thought i was big for these seats and the back seats were even worst, even with the head rests all the way up, if my head were to go backwards, Id be hitting the glass. anyone else noticed this? I cant imagine if I was taller, you can clearly see what im talking about when Alex sits in the truck 6:25 and 7:40
Speaking of Chevy when you going to Review the 2014 Chev SS? no one seems to be doing reviews of it yet ... Be the first so hop on it ! sure you will get tons of views added :) thanks
I traded a 2012 ram for a 2014 chevy ram looked good but it was cheap rattling in the windows and dashboard sucked up gas and paint chip's alot I put 24xxx miles on the ram and it had more chips than my 2011 f 150 with 65xxx miles I have had all the current trucks and ram thumbs down out of the Chevy and Ford the Ford is tighter and chevy has good gas mileage I love the new Chevy but the Ford is #1 chevy is a very close 2nd
Beautiful truck, But I didn't like how chev on the lesser model doesn't come with Projector lights. Come on Chev, seriously. Make them all the same. Halogen is outdated tech.
i just bought a 2014, traded my 2003. The "wax" black undercoating on mine is coming off after 30 days. i can take a wet rag and just wipe it off. This is total BS. it goes to the dealer next week. Apparently there is a TSB to dealers on this so hopefully they do something about this. "the most rust resistent truck yet" it is not.
Jimmy Kimber There's an invention called "rust proofing." I had an independent garage do my new Sierra for $200. The only pain is you have to bring in back every 18 months for an inspection. I did this because in wintertime my state uses chemicals that are eating the brake lines in our vehicles.
I really hate all these city slickers getting into the truck market. They're killing it. These are TRUCKS, not BMWs. Ride quality should be way down on the list of priorities. I just laugh when people complain about a rough ride in a truck. The Ram is a road whore, and so is the Ford. I'm glad GM is keeping trucks trucks, and not trying to turn them into cars.
Riiiiiiight....GM was the first to put traditional IFS on their 4x4 trucks of the big three and the first, and still only ones, to use it in their heavy duty trucks. They did that to keep them TOUGH! Yeah...
maybe I'm a fanboy but I appreciate the square wells. ok, I admit I just like Chevy trucks. that being said I am quick to speak on their bs. this isn't one of them. I like my 14 high country
That Chevy 1500 with the 6.2 BLOWS at towing because of how tall the gears are.... It's pretty pathetic that it can't even maintain speed on a slight incline with a 10k pound trailer when it's rated for 11,800lbs!
86dieselman The engine is great, don't get me wrong. Chevy just mucked up by using ridiculously tall gears. And the only axles available are a 3.08 and a 3.42. No 3.73 option.
Those rear bumper steps are gold.
I love the square wheel wells. Round ones especially look weird on a lifted truck. The square looks muscular, a nod to the square body of old as well.
Great review, best yet. I personally like the square wheel wells. It's different from Ford and Ram. GM has been doing
it on it's trucks for ages.
Just got my 2014 Silver 1500 LT version, absolutely love it.
I'm looking at buying one. Any problems yet?
No problem Dylan. Truck works great.

THE best 2014 Chevrolet Silverado currently available. Thank you!
i like the square wheel wells, reminds me of the older chevy trucks
This is one hell of a review. Great content, unbiased and very thorough!
One of the best looking generation as far as the next it's not doing it for me. That's why I bought a 18 High Country 6.2L
You are a great reviewer. The best i have seen in a while.
I like the squared look for the round wheels
I just bought an old Chevrolet Avalanche 2004. And I have a lot to do! I hope that Silverado 2014 will be my next! Good luck with everything! Greetings from Russia!
I enjoy your reviews the best. You are easy to listen to and very thorough. Keep up the good work.
First video of yours I've watched but wow! Great review. This is a vehicle review I've been looking for but haven't been able to find. Thank your sir!
Best auto reviewer on UA-cam. Good job as always.
Just discovered this channel, great review and will be watching more.
The body style and shape matches square angles and wheel arches better IMO
Alex is who u watch when u want to purchase a new vehicle...nothing but facts no gimmick
Alex as usual a very thorough review! Thx
Always great and very technical reviews.

Hey man, great review. I just wanted to drop in and let you know that you look like Ben Linus from the TV show Lost. Good day.
I like the square look doesn't bother me looks more masculine in my opinion
A very good and detailed review. Thanks.
Your video is tremendously helpful and informative. Thanks!!!
Another outstanding review! I appreciate your practical & technical knowledge of the cars/trucks that you drive for us. Very professional and informative!

Anyway, hats off to Ford, GM, and Chrysler Group for a really great offering of outstanding new pickups. For me, however, the Ram is the overall winner.
If you want a smoother shifting transmission, get the alison transmission. My 2003 Silverado has it and it shifts super smooth.
that's only super duties.

Ram sucks.
Chevy is the way
Yes, you are crazy when it comes to the square wheelwells.
Great review. You know your facts!
Extremely thorough, thank you
Square is goat
Great review as usual. What lake is that at 13:27? Beautiful spot.
all vehicles have round wheel cutouts these days. the 73-87 chevy gmc pickups have square wheel cutouts just like these new ones. Cadillac also used square wheel cutouts in the seventies. its an upscale look
excellent review
since when do the wheel cutouts have to be round? years ago most cars and trucks did not have round cutouts
Great review, do you have videos where you compare the various trim packages and options within a single model (Crew Cab vs. Double, 1LT vs. luxury package, etc.)
I don't on this truck, there are so many options it would get incredibly long.
does the 5.3 Liter run on regular gas?
Alex, it's been 4 years, can you do an updated review since so much has changed? Same for all of them
You still can't get the 8-foot bed, but you can get the 6' bed rather than the 5'8"
Not that I like Chevy and GMC, they're alright, but is it a 6' bed or a 6'4" like RAM's?
Jeremiah Hill 6'5" foot bed same as f150
chevydiesel350015 Ah okay, thanks.
FYI, Ford and GM are partnering up to make a 10 speed transmission for their trucks NOT a 8 speed.
I totally understand your feelings reference the square wheel wells...keep the square body but round for the well. Loving my 2014 Ram 1500 4X4 Laramie with the Hemi!
Great video

square wheel arches look good
Ok good review

Maybe it would be a good idea if you make an episode about the differences between the Chevy Silverado and the GMC Sierra, just to show what would make customers pay more for the Sierra and whether its really worth the extra money.
Interesting thought. I'll see if I can convince GM to cough up the Silverado and Sierra at the same time.
Feels like I just watched a 10min dodge ram advertisement...
what are you talking about he only shilled ram once this whole video. most of the vid was how chevy is better than ford/ram
I watched the Tundra episode and the Chevy episode. When will the Ram 1500 episode come out?
My hope is that it will be out this week.

totally agree with the wheel well comment, why square?
i actually like the square look but i wish they were rounded out a little bit more, but i dont want round ones though

Will you be doing a 2014 f150 review?
As soon as I can get one, yes.
Why don't I have a weather app and maps I have a compass app on my 2014 silverado
Finally someone who knows wtf they are talking about.
And not losing their mind over the garbage ecoboost and love it cause its different. It's a eco car with a truck look. They are not real trucks.
That steering wheel hot yet?
i think its fine like it is because no one really keeps the stock tires on them
I love that truck

Can you add a turbo to the v-6 through GM?
No, and I don't expect there will ever be one based on the engine design.
Very true, so no for a supercharger as well?
Bradson Vogel Supercharging aftermarket is, in general, much easier. I would not be surprised if there was a kit for the 5.3L V8 at some point soon. Your channel is a hidden gem, keep up the great reviews!
i like videp,my husband keeps talking about this truck,
DOT requires a CDL at 26,0001 lbs! What some states may require is a medical card but thats more of a length not weight issue!
Seems like you made a ram review rather than a chevy review.
when will you do the new S class
As soon as possible. Mercedes has not released them to the local press fleets yet but we expect them soon.
ram vs ford vs chevy which is the best built
+jonathan pierce well I own a ram and it is garbage. ford is great except they are now aluminum bodied trucks (a big no no) in my book. so I'm going to go with chevy. I rarely hear any complaints from Silverado owners.
Yea def right have you seen the reviews on the revamped 2016 model
I recently saw a sierra at an auto show and by no means that im a tall guy at 5' 7" but i felt the seats were so short in this truck, I thought i was big for these seats and the back seats were even worst, even with the head rests all the way up, if my head were to go backwards, Id be hitting the glass. anyone else noticed this? I cant imagine if I was taller, you can clearly see what im talking about when Alex sits in the truck 6:25 and 7:40
love the review - please stop saying "pick up truck" over and over.
+1 on the oddity of square wheel-wells
Speaking of Chevy when you going to Review the 2014 Chev SS? no one seems to be doing reviews of it yet ... Be the first so hop on it ! sure you will get tons of views added :) thanks
Soon I hope but I don't have any specifics yet.
This was definitely a Ram review.
yup
it was a chevy review, but he is gonna compare it to other trucks. that's what a review it, there not a bias butt hole like you.
Love it
Sticking with the bow tie
I have to disagree on the 8-speed when towing. It's constantly changing gears and will drive you mad!
People who buy pickups shouldn’t expect fuel economy to be great.
Yeah that 8 speed transmission is great……if it stayed out of the shop every 50k miles
i just bought a 2014, traded my 2003.
1:25 I agree
I really hate all these city slickers getting into the truck market. They're killing it. These are TRUCKS, not BMWs. Ride quality should be way down on the list of priorities. I just laugh when people complain about a rough ride in a truck. The Ram is a road whore, and so is the Ford. I'm glad GM is keeping trucks trucks, and not trying to turn them into cars.
Dodge is for dip shits.
Riiiiiiight....GM was the first to put traditional IFS on their 4x4 trucks of the big three and the first, and still only ones, to use it in their heavy duty trucks. They did that to keep them TOUGH! Yeah...
iluvincitingviolence
There's nothing wrong with an IFS
I have driven them all over the years. Noise matters more to me than ride, but a nice ride is, well, nice. Nobody is rock crawling $50K trucks.
maybe I'm a fanboy but I appreciate the square wells. ok, I admit I just like Chevy trucks. that being said I am quick to speak on their bs. this isn't one of them. I like my 14 high country
the ram is pure garbage no need to put the f150 or silverado in the same sentence lol
Gm is never doing a 8 speed tran more like 7 like c7 I hade all the trucks the gm twins gmc and chevy are the best
they now have an 8 speed automatic in the silverado 1500, so where is that confidence that GM will never do that. so your point is moot.
A year after he made this comment the 8speed came out
I don't like the round, circular headlights.
That Chevy 1500 with the 6.2 BLOWS at towing because of how tall the gears are.... It's pretty pathetic that it can't even maintain speed on a slight incline with a 10k pound trailer when it's rated for 11,800lbs!
Max tow package w/ 3.73 will more than do the job
It is a pretty amazing engine. Very impressed with the towing capabilities of the 6.2.
86dieselman The engine is great, don't get me wrong. Chevy just mucked up by using ridiculously tall gears. And the only axles available are a 3.08 and a 3.42. No 3.73 option.
Kris Demers If you get the max trailer package you get 3.73 gears.
Kris Demers That is why the 8 speed is coming to 6.2L engine GM trucks in 2015
