so is it a negative to want to be someone else? if I never want to be someone else and am content with me right now then I don't have a better person to strive to become... thoughts?
The truth of the matter is explicated in the fact of our multiplicity. If G-d wasn't looking for variety some of us would be redundant, no? Rabbi Nachman talks about the hidden Torah in Likkutei Moharan (Chapter 1). He says (Or maybe Rabbi Noson says in his name) that the goal of every moment is to discover who you are supposed to be in that moment. We also have from Perkei Avos that "If you are not gaining you are losing" meaning in devekus and Torah v'Mitzvah (Or v'Ner). The Rebbe spoke incessantly about the need to be a Shluchim wherever you find yourself, because the fact that you are there (lets bring in some Carlebach) means that whatever the situation is, it is the situation that only you are made for (otherwise someone else would be there). There is a very precise, and therefore highly calculated, and distinct existence which is the totality of you. This isn't, obviously, so highly curated so that you would simply throw yourself away to pretend you are someone else (at least this is the goal) summed up nicely by Hillel "If I am not for myself, who will be for me?" meaning If I am not for the elevation of myself, if even I desparage my identity and despise it, will someone else come along to be me? No one can. You are stuck with you: :) Sorry I came so late my holy brother, much love from here!
This is my UA-cam classic
