As a knitter and rug hooker of 60+ years I have seen a good deal of colour bleed. My tips are: Avoid Heat. Hand Wash in Cold water, Add vinegar to the clod rinse water. Roll the garment in a towel to squeeze the water out. roll in a direction that reduces the possibility of bleed. For your 2 color sweater you can roll each end toward the centre or roll sideways instead of lengthwise. Dry Flat on a towel. Of these tips the Vinegar rinse and dry flat are the most important. Vinegar is the fixative that rug hookers use to set the dye in wool, it also dissolves soap residue giving a cleaner rinse. (1/4 to 1/2 cup in a basin of cold water is all you need. ) Thank You Shannon for your crafting content. I love to see you reviving the crafts that I learned from my grandmothers.

Yes, definitely the vinegar is key! I used to embroider clothing pieces as gifts and for craft fairs, etc and always had to soak the floss. beforehand. I even thought "uh-oh" when she started knitting, but knew since this was from last year, whatever was going to happen had already happened! 🙂 Even with a vinegar disk of the fiber or thread, you can still have some bleed with the first wash, but I've never had it not come out with the second wash and then no further bleeding.

How about a crazy quilt vest? I’ve seen several and they can be quite beautiful, especially when made out of velvets and satins for a dressy holiday flair. You’ve become very good at it. Love watching all these projects unfold. As far as Christmas trees, I love color in the decorations but the lights need to be white for me because I’ve always thought they should resemble glistening snow or stars or something.😊

Patchwork vests made with velvets and satins were popular in the 70s and looked really cute with woolens and tweeds. Think of how cute a velvet collar looks on a wool coat or blazer.

I don’t know if you will actually see this but I wanted to oppose those people making negative comments you sometimes show on the screen. Hard to believe some ppl can be so rude. Yours are new favorite 😍 channels of mine. First one that I watched was you explaining why ppl make second channels. Next how you furnished your entire apartment with recycling furniture, etc. then your house in Nova Scotia and I’m over the moon. Watching and rewatching all, not so much the sewing/knitting ones although blown away by your talent. When I was small my mom had your grandma’s Singer machine. She was a seamstress, always involved in a sewing project. Love your channels and still haven’t figured out if you and Phil are romantic as well as business partners but I think so ❤ 😊 I wonder if you know of another favorite channel of mine also in Nova Scotia remaking 100+ year old Victorian, her channel Ariel Bissett with second channel a book podcast with her friend. Maybe you’re even in the same area. You would be great friends. She is always on marketplace and redoing rooms in her old house. Right now I have your 3 hour Christmas compilation running in the background!

This is December 2024. I am so enjoying your traveling compilation. My grandmother taught me how to chicken scratch when I was around 10 or 11. I loved doing that. I love the snowflake pattern! She also taught me to crochet, and as I’m watching you, I am crocheting baskets out of t-shirt yarn for Christmas gifts. Love watching your renovations on your NS home. So fun! I am now 71 years old and have been crocheting since I was around 10. I taught myself to knit as an adult but I’m not as proficient at it as crocheting. I’m really enjoying your channels. Also, love Canelle. Sooo cute she is! I rotate between white lights and multicolored lights from year-to-year. I like both. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you.

What a treat! Absolutely love these vlogs and can’t get enough of the circus. Love your face paint designs. Looks beautiful. What a harrowing wardrobe malfunction in Detroit. Can’t believe you were able to pull it off. How long have you and Phil been working together? You seem to have such a lovely relationship. Whether you are performing or working on the house in Nova Scotia you seem to always support each other’s efforts. Such a lovely man and such fabulous Corgi parents. Keep gesturing. Your joy for life is contagious. Anyone who doesn’t appreciate that can go elsewhere. And while we are on the subject, I would report that manager to her corporate office. Was wondering about Cannelle - so glad you told us about her whereabouts. We are missing her too! BTW, when I saw your electric pot, I had to order one right away. It will be perfect for my tiny apartment kitchen where I have limited cooking appliances. Can’t believe how reasonably priced it was. Thanks for sharing. Merry Christmas 2024. 🎄

Thanks for taking us on the road with you; it stirred up many memories for me! My Grampy was a Master Electrician for Holiday on Ice/Ice Capades and traveled with the show around North America during the 60's - 80's. My Grammy traveled with him; she always carried her bag of yarn and crochet hooks to make "Granny squares" (pieced into afghans for each of 9 grandchildren) and a sewing kit. I remember her stitching on buttons, hemming skirts, and darning socks for the two of them and also for the skaters and crew in the shows. We got tickets to the shows when they played nearby! I loved going backstage after a show to meet the stars and get our programs signed. Magical times! Thank you for vlogmas!

As a former commercial Xmas decorator, I preferred the clear mini incandescent lights for practical reasons and a big show. But after 15 years, I started craving colour and switched to multicoloured at home. I’ve finally settled on a favourite theme. I love rustic Canadiana decor: santas on skis, buffalo plaid, tuques, skates, toboggans and mitts, gingerbread men, candy canes and lots of it home made.🥰 To date, LED’s haven’t offered the sparkle that clear minis have. Being of French ancestry, we all speak with our hands. Just don’t keep long stem wine glasses on the table LOL!

I came to say the same thing! She might have been new to that position & unsure how to approach or nervous about the possible reaction of the guest, but it needed to be addressed. Possible further training is required or she's just not the right person for that particular position. She won't learn to do better if she isn't told she's doing it wrong! So a call to her upper management was or is, is beneficial!

Lol what a mess with the door not working.
Back in the 70s I did Anything Goes and I was one of the four angels that were supposed to look alike and dress alike. I had long brown hair and everybody else had short dark hair so they had me wear a wig.
One of our numbers was tap dance to “take me back to Manhattan” and we had props of top hats and canes. We are talking almost 50 years ago, but I can still remember part of the dance.
So as we’re dancing with canes flying in the air, I notice that there’s a top hat on the floor. After looking around, I realize it’s my hat.
I had the first line after that dance. So as the applause dies down, I walk over to the hat with an attitude, pick it up, tuck it under my arm, and then say my funny line.
It worked. I was so proud of myself. I was only 17. I did a great job.

The Polish version of the white vs coloured lights debate is the cheesecake question: should you add raisins to the cheesecake or not? Of course the only valid answer is ‘absolutely not, raisins are literally Satan’, but Poles still fight over it 😅

    • @SdW.8
      @SdW.8 2 місяці тому +5

I've NEVER heard of this and I'm from Polish lineage, so this is fun to find out. Are we talking regular grape raisins or some other type of dried fruit? Do they go into the cheese layer or a layer of its own? This is blowing my mind.
      PS I hate raisins too😂

As a hand knitting pattern designer, I have found out that different designers consider different cast ons to be “regular.” My friend Melissa Leapman always uses knit on, if I recall. I always long tail.
Interesting point, if you use a long tail cast on, it’s the same thing as using a backward loop /e-wrap/half hitch cast on plus knitting one row. That means after you do the cast on you’re ready to do a purl row. If you don’t, the cast on is backward and you have a bumpy edge. Look at what the designer says to do on the row after the cast on. Make sure you do knit or purl for the first row, based on what cast on you used., because if you did longtail, you’re actually ready to do the second row.

Have a safe and happy holiday/touring season. Looking forward to anything you are willing to share from this tour. It is kind of sad that you won’t be spending your first Christmas away from your new home. But I guess that comes from my own experience, having never been away from home/family during the Holidays. Your world seems to have always been MUCH bigger than mine ever was. And that’s the fun thing about us humans….we’re all so different, yet somehow find connection in ways big and small. I like the white lights, but my husband likes colored. Since his vision is not great and the white lights seem harsh for him, we stick to the colored lights. We also put a crackling fire in a fireplace video on our TV in the evenings! Helps us relax at the end of the day. Thanks for sharing this holiday adventure! It was fun to see where the garland ended up in each motel room. Love the bookstore in Savanah! First of all, I found your channel, channels about 6 months ago and I look forward to therm and look for them all the time. Second, I will never understand why people post negative comments because if I do not like a channel or what they have produced I simply move on and do not watch. There are sine in the US who use hands gestures I think some call the accordion and they are made fun of whi is famous BUT your gestures are more then your hands and you can tell toy ate an artist because you express yourself with enthusiasm and humility at the same time and honestly, it is your personality and who you are and is what makes toy so relatable. I really enjoy seeing what you are willing to share in your performances because it is absolutely fascinating to watch. Please be you, ignore the hateful depressed people and keep making your videos because they make my day every tine you share.

Loved your compilation, Shannon! Planned to to just skim through watching bits and pieces. Then, when I saw the Vlogmas format, I decided I'd watch a couple of parts and then make it into a Vlogmas for this year and watch each segment on sequential days. It turns out I have ZERO willpower and just kept watching (with a half hour break to make tacos) right through to the end! It was so addictive that I just couldn't stop! You're such an interesting and interested person. Like you, I find pretty much anything interesting, either on my own or because I see someone else so enthused about it that I need to learn more to see it, too.

I too adore these longer video sets. Its a great way to catch up on events past and put my little gremlins down for a nap. No explosions, gunfire, screaming, clocks or alarm sounds. Perfect for lulling to sleep🎉🎉😅❤❤

I enjoyed the series last year. This year for me is much less about Christmas and more about clearing out years of old books, other art supplies, clothing I won't need and getting my tiny garden gone.
It's a big change but I will "force" myself to make gingerbread cookies, maybe some mincemeat tarts.

Thank you! I had a big project to do today, requiring a moderate amount of my attention, so having this on to keep me company was perfect! I've seen these videos in the past, so I didn't feel too bad if my attention wandered away for a few minutes, but it was cozy and entertaining for the part of my brain that needs to be engaged 😊💙

Enjoying the compilations - I am writing holiday cards and sewing holiday oven mitts for gifts. You are very much helping me get motivated to make stuff! The best holiday gift from your channel should you care to accept the challenge - a compilation with all the festive making and cosy corgi content, without talking. I totally enjoy all your stories - but a retrospective "holiday card" that is a collage with just your beautifully filmed visuals would be amazing for cosy background and touch more restful for those times when my neurodivergent brain is a little worded out.

I would love so much to work in wardrobe for performers in that world. I'm definitely not a performer but how much would I love to make all the props and costumes. I actually work in film and television for a few years in my 20s and I LOVED it!

Growing up we had a combo of colored and white at my moms house. At my dads it was mainly white lights with blue lights to go with his Hallmark StarTrek ornaments that needed a strand of lights to work. And white lights at my grandmothers house. And now I'm married and I base it off my mood for that year and my husband prefers the clean look of white lights only lol so I have decided I'm team as many lights as possible and what makes your heart happy

When I use my patterns, I cut them out around the largest size then I fold in the sizes I don't need until I get to the size I do need. This way the entire pattern is intact and none of the sizes are lost. It takes a little bit more time to do it this way, but I prefer to keep my patterns intact this way. I have a lot of vintage patterns that I inherited from my grandmother. It was really fun to see the patterns that she used to make clothes for me and my siblings when we were younger. It brought back a lot of memories of her.

I finished addressing my Christmas cards, did a little bit of Christmas decorating in our new apartment, and unloaded the dishwasher while listening to this video.
As for the Christmas tree lights, I use warm, white LED lights on my tree because they look good with my eclectic collection of ornaments and also remind me that, historically, people used to decorate their Christmas trees with lit candles.

I grew up with colored lights. As an empty-nester I got a very skinny tree with white lights and decorated it with white, cream, silver, and gold decorations. This year being in my own again, I got a new pre-lit tree with colored AND white lights and I have it set to alternate and I love it. I also decorated with my nostalgic decorations. Old family heirlooms, ornaments my daughter made, and some we made together. I need to print pictures of my grandkids to go in the frame ornaments I have collected over the years.

For the color bleed issue, you might want to try a white vinegar solution. I use vinegar when doing dying with food dye for my woolly experiments as sort of a mordant, which might help. I usually eyeball it but I'm sure there's a formula online. And of course, cold water, and as you squeeze it out, keep the grey section up top, and the blue below so the color doesn't bleed into the grey by accident.

Years ago I had some beautiful yarn and was knitting a sweater and after a couple hours of knitting noticed my hands were black and promptly went to the store where I purchased the yarn and the owner called the manufacturer and they told her sometimes when they set the dye it is not held in long enough to set to avoid bleeding out and told her they would send me the yarn to replace my order and to throw what I had away, but I was talking to a lady that produces her own yarns and she told me to soak the yarn over night in vinegar. I did that and it set the color perfectly! I was glad I had not got to far in my sweater because it was easier to do it in balls of the same color. Perhaps you could dip the blue in and then turn it around and do the grey side if needed.
