- On Saturday May 5th at the Hilton Midtown in New York, Adam Lambert and Melissa Etheridge joined forces for a powerful duet of Etheridge's hit song "I'm The Only One". It has been 25 years since the icon released her record YES I AM, and used her platform to increase visibility for the LGBTQ community by coming out publicly as lesbian.

@@gentleraine480 , it was awful! I’m older than she is and have liked her music for a long time. I think she was trying to out sing Adam, and was screeching by the end. Too much force on the guitar and it turned into a painful jam session. She cannot out sing Adam, but if you know him, you know he doesn’t outsing/upstage anyone. More than one run through the song was needed. It’s too bad, maybe a softer sound with a build up toward the end…..
@@mdcvalentine Agreed. Talented but respectful. I have a huge catalog of Adam’s music from American Idol and beyond. Love Melissa but not many in her age group (which I share, by the way) can complete with Lambert’s vocals.

Duets are for blending voices. Adam’s really good at that. Melissa’s voice is one of a kind- nobody could blend with her unless she scaled it back a bit.

She's dreadful. She sounds like she's trying to drown Adam out rather than sing with him. He sounds like he's trying to make the best of it.
@@meezursrule Your right i thought she wasn't trying to sing just make a noise...but he never tries to stand out when he is singing with someone he always supports them. She would sound ok if she wasn't singing with someone who can actually sing..i like her tone ...i prefer tone over perfect singing when the person can't sing great...that's why i prefer ginger over sporty spice..who can sing perfect notes but still sounds awful. Adam never says a bad word about anyone...good parenting.
She sounds like an actual rock star performing live onstage. He sounds like a pop star performing her song on american idol. I've heard a million versions of her song at the karaoke bar, and Adam's wasn't any better or worse than the last hundred ppl I've heard, but none of them compare to her.
Adam sings pretty. I like him. But this was not him singing background, or following her at all. They just did two different versions of the song and she had to belt to be heard whenever they sang together, obviously the result wasn't good.
Maybe it would've been better if her mike was closer or if they actually shared a mike, but it's kinda silly to complain about the original artists voice and instrument for not making him sound better, she could've (and has) carried the entire performance alone and it would've been (and is) amazing.

It's sung around the world, in many languages, covered by hundreds of other musicians on stage and sung by countless millions in karaoke bars and talent shows for the past several decades. I'm an Adam fan, but I'm also a Melissa fan, and a music fan. I've been hearing this song my whole life and her voice is amazing. I was thinking how how he sounded until she got a line. When she started singing, it made him sound like a filtered radio edit. Like Micheal Buble or Celine Dion tryna sing a rock song. Good voice, bad fit.
@@pvp6077 Oh, please. She was way overdoing it. I think she was a bit intimidated by Adam. There was no need for her to screech as much as she did. Adam just went along with it because he’s always a very polite and gracious partner when dueting with someone. If he had really let loose, he would have blown her away.

Obviously, I'm an Adam fan; However not everything he does is perfect. He is singing over her. A duet should blend so the two voices complement and literally become one.
I don't get that he's singing over her. She backs off her mic quite often. They said they rehearsed the song once together and then decided to wing it.

I think this was an impromptu performance & under the circumstances ADAM did very well .. probably was given a song sheet before they performed & ADAM being the trouper that he is just sang it the best he could which IMO was damn good!! I myself never heard this song sung or for that matter never heard Melissa Ethridge sing before I saw this video!! LAMBERT Outlaw
@@tatubert8210 I have heard Melissa sing it back in the day and was very good. This was awful and my understanding is she wanted it to be more spontaneous, so only one run through before. I don’t believe that is Adam’s style, it must have been stressful!
I must have watched something different, that was awful! Two musicians who haven’t performed together before needed to rehearse more than once. When you choose to “organically” collaborate, you risk sounding like a cat fight by the end.
Their voices don't blend very good. I'd like to hear Adam sing it by himself. She's terrible.
Lmao he can learn her song at the karaoke bar like everyone else but can't keep up with her real life stage presence, the fact that she basically had to scream to be heard over him is down to the sound crew and whoever put her mike all the way up there while he has his practically down his own throat.
I love Adam's voice but he needs more experience working with other people. I think Melissa had too much confidence in his voice and ability to improvise, she should've just bit the bullet and let him rehearse with her a few more times.
@@pvp6077 Adam has plenty of experience working with other people. He has been on stage since the age of 10 or around there. He has such a powerful voice that it is hard for most singers to compete with him. She never was a good vocalist. I'm surprised she would even agree to sing with one of the worlds best singers.

My sentiments exactly, Adam was definitely holding back, and you can tell that Melissa was definitely impressed! And those of us who really know Adam and his vocal range realized he held back when he didn't hit none of his soprano notes, 🤷♀️
