I’m a punk rock dude who struggles with addiction issues. Recently my gf left me because of my drinking. This song keeps coming on my Spotify which is weird because I don’t listen to Katy Perry. While we were together I always wondered why she let my addiction keep coming between us but because of this song and the things she said to me I’m really starting to get it. She told me “I always thought you’d be the person who would never hurt me” I’m convinced that sober me never would. I guess all I can say is I’m truly sorry that I’m still drinking. I lost a really great girl to my habits and I can never get her back.
    Edit:
I posted this 2 years ago. I thought I was hopeless and would never get past my addiction. I had accepted that I was just gonna die from this. Luckily I found the program of AA and I’ve been recovering. I have decided that I’m never going to drink or drug again. It’s absolutely imperative that I don’t. I am finding the true meaning of love, happiness, serenity and learning how to cope with life. I never thought I’d be able to recover but I am. I’m so blessed for the life I’m living today.

Jacob Aten Hey man. You’re feeling bad right now but it’ll get better. I encourage you to seek some help for your drinking and become the best version of you. It’s a long and hard process but I believe in you. You can do it man.

@@berealsupportive2744 I understand your sentiment but telling an alcoholic just not to drink is not helpful. If I could just not drink I would’ve done it long ago before she left. I understand that capitalism and the government profits off of addicts through the prison industrial complex and through alcohol and cigarette sales but that doesn’t make me some sort of government pawn. I’m a human being with an illness that goes beyond just not buying alcohol. I fully appreciate the support and am beyond grateful to everyone who has shown me kindness through this time. I will get better someday because I absolutely refuse to let myself die this way and you’re right, I refuse to let myself die in a way that would benefit the government in any form. So thank you but be mindful that addiction is an illness that requires years of constant therapy and hard work and just saying “don’t drink” comes off as insensitive even if you didn’t mean it in that way. Thank you again I appreciate your support.

@@berealsupportive2744 unfortunately in addiction, it isn't as simple as "stop buying it." Addiction is a compulsive thing. Someone who's an alcoholic might not even like drinking anymore but their sensory systems, and the way their brains become wired over the course of addiction, are constantly firing off telling them they need the alcohol. They obsess over it. Same with drug addicts. Back when I was using, my brain constantly told me I needed the drugs. My self-esteem told me I wasn't good enough to be loved sober and I didn't deserve it. Towards the end of my active addiction, I HATED using drugs. I hated myself. I hated the feelings. But I couldn't stop. Fear of change, fear of cutting out the people I had considered friends at that time (because bad friends were better than no friends to me at the time) and being alone and fear of feeling all the emotions I was trying to escape again all led me to keep using. Unfortunately, some people get the low self-esteem I described and commit suicide because they believe they can never be a better person and that they aren't worthy of recovery and love. All these emotions and all the fear and just the obsessive-compulsive nature of addiction make it so much harder than "don't drink." I do know you mean well though and so that's why I've explained this here.

@@Jacob-pd2dd hey man, I've been where you're at right now, although my substance was meth/heroin back when I was using. I know it's hard to get clean. I know it's scary. I know the fear, the doubt, the lack of self-worth you feel. I just want you to know that you are worthy of a better life. That you are worth love, happiness and joy. I know it's hard to walk away from something you've been using so long but you can do it when you're ready. And if you ever do want to quit and need someone to talk to, please know you can message me (just comment on here and I'll give you my other social media account you can message). I've been clean for 6 years but I also started at day 1 and know how terrifying getting sober can feel. You got more strength than you give yourself credit for and you deserve a life that doesn't revolve around alcohol ❤

My cousin is an alcoholic and it's to the point where his brain is literally fried. He was so intelligent and hes 40. It's really hard but u know yourself and if certain things trigger you try to avoid those things. Get closer to people who love you and apart yourself from those who are a bad influence. Like try not to go to the stores or look at that section. Save yourself.

If there's one thing I really appreciate about this song over a lot of other breakup songs I've heard it's that this song is so direct. There is no ambiguity as to why this person left, nor any doubt in my mind that they were right to do so. This blunt honesty is so refreshing, compared to things like, say, "Stronger" which comes across as more provoking than explanatory.

Bethany Claire honestly any issue as a couple should be solved worked on as a couple the struggle is real people break and look for so called escapes which is due to trauma stress depressed and people whom are in pain mentally or physically that person should always receive closure and make sure his/her head is on straight and won't lose control as they battle it shall not worsen as Ur with that person nor should u allow h to do so by simply make positive interesting events that'll catch their interest to always be away from that drug n stop using since the feeling of happiness is completed once positively active and with their lover they will b away from as u should never pass judgement tho speak Ur mind and let the drug be known and show interesting even educational videos on those drugs n users n people who order dose will give them a proper heads up without passing judgement as never go along with the drug as both will get addicted and be stuck in a stage that's frozen I love Travie and was offended when I heard this she said she's leaving him while he's struggling with an addiction that can possibly kill him as Ur singing about it like hes in his right mind when he's not her putting him on blast is childish and disrespectful for her to do I love her music but not her sorry I dislike this song tho I love other songs from her I don't like how she is disloyal she to her man by quickly stepping writing and ratting and b like f u fuck her

This is one of her strongest songs. Though I've never dealt with a drug addict, the theme of betrayal is what makes me relate to it. I once had to give my trust to someone older than me. After three months, he betrayed my trust and verbally harassed me every day. He basically became a huge jerk and circled the drain. I eventually stood up to him and finally got some well-deserved independence. To this day, I'm STILL very angry at him. Listening to this song when I'm mad at him gives me a release. If ANYONE is in that kind of situation, don't stay and watch them circle the drain!

She also broke up with him when her star started to rise. Travis McCoy was way more successful than Katy was when they started dating. I think that when she realized that she didn't need him anymore, she needed to make an excuse for why she was dumping him. I think she used him for her career, so she tried to vilify him for struggling with an addiction. That's incredibly insensitive. Also, since he's an artist, as well, she didn't have to put him out there like this. This could have ended his career.
I also wanted to point out that she dated and later married Russell Brand shortly after, who is well known for having overcome several addictions, including drugs and alcohol. When they were together she would try to get him to party in clubs, where there was the very same alcohol that he was trying to avoid and he wasn't ok with partying, understandably. As a former girlfriend of a drug addict that she claimed to have broken up with, due to his addiction, shouldn't she have known better? Sorry, but I call bullshit.

Also, for all you people saying, why'd Katy write about her personal life, let me say this, songwriters are inspired but the joys and struggles of life. They write about how they feel and what they've been through. This is probably just her way of getting her anger out without going on a rampage. That's the best thing about songwriting, that you can get your feelings out. She's just venting about her breakup.

Just about every song written is about someone or some situation. Katy isn't weak for leaving that travie guy. She is a woman that knows what she wants. Travie wasn't it and also for addicts you have to want to help yourself before anyone else can help you. She was wise to get out when she did instead of staying with him and allowing him to drag her down or possibly ending up like Rhianna with her face bashed in. I don't think anyone should ever stay in a situation they're not comfortable with. The song also shows her anger and disappointment. Katy most likely tried to help travie but it just didn't work out and now she's singing about how she's not going to stay. Enough was enough.

regardless of how bad it really was and he owns up to that, when u love someone u shouldnt just shit on them on a record when it wasnt like he really ment to, addiction is a disease and it takes over and honestly they arent in their right mind but if it wasnt for the break up he wouldnt have finally took a look in the mirror and got the help he needed but she def. didnt need to put it on a song after he had already gotten clean or was in the process of doing so. She got hurt and he was already hurting for a long time it so it was a messed up situation.

I agree, she didn't have to broadcast it, but she's not the first and she wont be the last. From the beginning of time, life experiences and feelings from them have inspired people to share their experiences with others in someway, be it by: song, poem, painting etc. Katy's song can be viewed in many ways really. It can be seen as though shes just looking for her next big hit, revenge for hurting her or even a message to others in similar situations to help them. So, really there is no right or wrong to this. Katy holds the right to write about or broadcast whatever she feels, but at the same time it is morally wrong. Another thing... if she had to go to counseling after her relationship with Travie.. I'm sure she was advised to try writing about her feelings as a form of therapy... So maybe this was therapeutic for her.Writing, sing... etc.. its whatever really. I'm sorry I kind of lost interest in all this.

Lol I had just recently sat down and listened to GCH again and watched the behind the music and heard about the song so I came here to listen. And u r very right it could've been therapeutic but thank goodness it didn't hinder a human being getting well from addiction ya know BC he was in love with her so that could've been another pit fall but it wasn't and she has a right to release her anger and hurt ur very right it was just kinda hard to listen to a song like this BC I have family battling with addiction and I myself have said hurtful things to them but I know in the end trying to sugar coat really isn't the beat thing but neither is just babbling my incoherant hurt either u know.

    • @TyEchiwa
      @TyEchiwa 10 років тому

You're right again, you're babbling isn't the best thing for them but it's good for you. You shouldn't hold all of those negative feelings inside. It's bad for your health just like their addiction. So, its better out than in. Hence, the advice to try expressing ones feelings with talking and etc. But remember, what you're saying to them is mostly hurtful to them because what you're saying is most likely the truth. The truth hurts, especially when one doesn't want to be faced with it. So, make sure that you take care of yourself, first and foremost. But, I guess you can try to be tactful with the way you say things.

Last friday night?? And in Hot n Cold, "bitch" is not really considered swearing nowadays...this is the only song where she swears and it actually expresses direct anger more than just whining about the situation. So it suits it.

Guys let me just say it is about Travis. Because she said in a interview once that she wanted to have a comeback song for him because all the lyrics are true about him. He did just get wasted because of those pills. And it's not about the Russell Brand. On the Teenage Dream album or the Complete Confection album (which has all the songs) peacock, the one that got away, E.T hummingbird heartbeat, not like the movies, who am I living for, pearl, wide awake, part of me, is about Russell Brand. There

You know I was the other side of this song, I’m the one who fucked up and lost the love of my life. It kills me every single day, knowing that I found the most perfect girl I’ll ever find, but knowing that I’ll never be with her again. If I could take it all back I would, but now it’s too late and she’s gone. However I can honestly say that it was for the best, If she had stayed with me I would only have dragged her down. It was only when I lost her that I started to turn my life around. But it was too late.
