This is Sarah Chen's rendition of the 1950s MinYao, "Lover's Riverside," originally performed by Cui Ping. It was popularly covered by both male and female singers. Notable performers include Tsai Ching, Anita Mui, Fong Fei-Fei, Danny Chan, and Fei Yu-Ching.
Sarah Chen performed this song in 1977 when she was 18 or 19, found in her album "Cold Rain Songs." Her rendition was practically lost, with no videos on UA-cam, unlike those of other performers. Chen's version, shown in this video, offers a fresh take compared to the older singers' heavier and sadder renditions.
Why was Chen's rendition so obscure even though it's such a fantastic performance? Looking back at Chen's early career, it's clear she had been a first-rate singer since her late teens. However, she faced strong competition from established singers like Teresa Teng, Jenny Tseng, Fong Fei-Fei, and Tracy Huang. Much of Sarah Chen's early work was buried and remained so even after she achieved stardom.
Career support may have been a factor. Chen's career likely could have benefited from greater professional support. It appears her main support came from her mother. In her mid-to-late career, Chen seemed to have encountered complications that nearly crushed her. After Chen abandoned her career, her work was left to her former record labels. Haishan wasn't particularly well-organized, releasing confusing "Best of Chen" CDs with overlapping songs. EMI dissolved, harming the preservation of Chen's mid-career work. So she was left with Rock Records. No wonder the narrative about Chen centered on how much she benefited from working with Rock Records. Who says history cannot be rewritten.
Despite Sarah Chen's success and extraordinary achievements, one is left with the impression that things could have been better. At the very least, Chen likely would have suffered less with greater professional support and an improved workplace environment, including better gender climate and mental health support. It is too late for Chen and many others, but changes may help newcomers.
