I love how the lyrics perfectly fit each of the characters. Mugen: "Sharp like an edge of a samurai sword The mental blade cut through flesh and bone Though my mind's at peace, the world out of order Missing the inner heat, life gets colder" Mugen's fighting style is unconventional, yet sharp like the blade he wields, and it is this unpredictabilty that allows him to easily cut through obstacles. Despite his traumatic childhood, he seems to be the most at peace with himself compared to his companions. This is likely due to his understanding that the world is out of order and life is difficult. As a result, he has become a realist who sees things as they are, without being overly optimistic or pessimistic. Jin: "Oh yes, I have to find my path No less, walk on earth, water, and fire The elements compose a magnum opus My modus operandi is amalgam" Jin is a person who is motivated by a deep sense of purpose and a quest for meaning. He has already overcome numerous challenges, symbolized by his journey through earth, water, and fire, which represent the hardships of his life. The phrase "magnum opus" is used to describe Jin's fighting style, which is comparable to the work of an artist or composer. This is fitting, as Jin's battles are characterized by grace and elegance. Overall, Jin's character is defined by his resilience and his pursuit of excellence in all aspects of his life. He is a true samurai. Fuu: "Steel packed tight in micro-chip On my armor a sign of all-pro The ultimate reward is honor, not awards At odds with the times in wards with no lords" Fuu is undoubtedly the smartest member of the trio, with a determined focus on finding the Samurai who smells of sunflowers. Her "steel packed" demeanor suggests that she is the team's innovator and the one who holds Mugen and Jin together. Fuu's motivation seems to stem from a sense of honor rather than material gain, as evidenced by the third line. Her personality strikes a perfect balance between Jin's Samurai side and Mugen's Champloo renegade side, blending both worlds seamlessly. Overall, Fuu's presence is essential to the success of the trio.
Awesome explanation. Someone else already mentioned what I’m about to say but the colors for each of their segments also match pretty good, for Mugen he has a range of warm red when he’s doing some attack or running but when he’s calm he’s a cool red and even some blue, it signifies how Mugens hot head temper is constantly fluctuating up and down Jin remains cool blue throughout his intro as he always remains calm and collected no matter what, as if him drawing the sword is him practicing but the sudden change bright red when he draws towards the camera shows that wasn’t a practice swing and had intent to kill, but then returns to cool blue to show how in control he is of his emotions like a true samurai Fuu is constantly shown in bright colors as she’s the happiest of the trio and has a bubbly personality and outlook on life, but there’s moments where her shades become more somber reflecting her emotional moments in the show and how even tho she’s always positive her quest is a deeply personal and emotional one. She’s also the most vulnerable and in her segment when she’s in “vulnerable” positions that’s when her colors are darker

I honestly believe this show was what helped bridge the gap between hip-hop culture and otaku culture. Rock, punk, and EDM have always had great representation in anime. Either through clothing and hair styles, OPs, and rebellious character traits. But SC changed the game and introduced hip-hop culture to otakus and anime to hip-hop fans. This was a cultural revolution that blended urban stylings and creativity on both ends.
DoggosarenotPuppers Boondocks came a little bit after SC. But yeah, that show and Afro Samurai helped bridge cultures too. My main point is that SC was a show that a lot of hip-hop and urban fans could really connect to.

Morever how it drags you really into the time of the samurai, this is really accurate to live has been once not so far back in Japan, the Arts of swords had a huge meaning back then, combined with nujabes its like jazz with tank, totally incredible
Well Samurais weren't all that much like we tend to describe them, righteous warriors with a strong code of honor and all... Well aside from the part about the strong code of honor ("Bushido", aka the path of the warrior, if I'm not mistaken), samurais weren't actually all that good and righteous back in feudal Japan.
@@megapulsar9244 yup most were scumbags drunk with power (that power is them being trained to kill etc) , people were terrified of them especially ronin, samurais with no lord or allegiance... basically crazy men walking around with sharp swords that could end you in a second.

Ergo Proxy is surreal and damn that Opening is top tier.. up with nujabes work for sure.. Tho Monster and Serial Experiments Lain and Paranoia Agent are def somes you should check out if you haven’t yet!
Nujabes created his own genre, popularised it and pioneered it leaving something special for the artists after him to expand and experiment with. He was an OG and everyone should think that way.
As a kid I had fairly bad insomnia, sometimes not getting a wink of sleep for several days but the one upside was watching adult swim late at night. Samurai shamploo, cowboy beep bop, ghost in the shell and Read or Die were so endearing in style and tone I just couldn’t get enough of it. Thank god I wasn’t the only one that’d felt that way because it’d be a crying shame to let these shows slip away from our memories.
I knew nothing about it until a few months ago. Having watched quite a few anime, Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo were the two best one I've watched. I rate One Piece pretty high, but I'll be surprised if anything ever tops either of the two I said.
A cool bit of attention to detail in this opening I think is how the colors the characters are tinted in in their various vignettes are somewhat reflective of their mood at that time. You can see Mugen shifts from chill mode where he's tinted in blue to various warmer shades when he's in the heat of battle, and obviously Fuu has mostly bright and cheery vibes. But the one I think is coolest is Jin, because you can see that in all but one of his vignettes he's tinted in calm blue, and then the one at 0:24 where he strikes directly towards the camera is in red. To me this is saying that in the other strikes he's just in the middle of practice, but the red one was a strike with actual killing intent...and then he just sheathes his sword in chill blue again as if it never happened. That's dope.
Also, the animals in jin and mugens backgrounds represent their character, for jin there's fish which represent his "go with the flow" style and attitude, while Mugen, there is a rooster which I imagine represents how he is flamboyant and aggressive and hard to predict
It is the same for Mugen, who has the roughness and unpredictability of the Rooster, and Fuu for obvious reasons has images of vegetables and flowers lol.
I'll never forget laying with my head hanging off the foot of my bed going crazy from insomnia and hearing this at 2am for the first time. I shot up in attention seeing anime and hiphop mixed. Early 2000s were amazing
even the very first time seeing this intro it's nostalgic. I don't understand how artists can capture the nostalgic feeling for something not yet experienced. I'm in awe of this still after the years. and great anime too top 5 for me for sure
All this talk about Nujabes starting lofi. He didn't invent lofi. He crafted a style and sound totally his own. We're all hoping to capture that moment in time the way he did, but we'll never do it. Nostalgia is powerful, which is what, in combination of his style that makes Nujabes so unforgettable. His music is packed away in key moments of our life. There's no way we can mimic that. Lofi can't mimic that. Nujabes didn't just craft a new style, but he shaped a whole generation. The music we listen to, the memories we call upon, the moments we cherish. It's all in reflection to his music. To the moments he made for us.
Fun fact: the instrumental for this song is called "Other Side Of Phase" which I believe is Nujabes' first song ever. A perfect example as to how good Nujabes is at using melodies and reusing them aswell.

First aired May 2004 In 2 month will be 20 years anniversary. Mugen, Jin and Fuu were 19, 20 and 15 yo. I wonder what our 39 yo, 40 yo and 35 yo adventurers would be up to today, and especially if Mugen ever did get married to the hot Ninja girl 😊
0:58 what makes this intro perfect is just the way they run with there swords and facial expressions, the creators are showing us what kind of person they are just the way they do there “battle cry”
Their character intros do it a lot more clearly, Jin is so clean, focused, and a clear direction in mind, Mugen is wild, all over the place, and and in different states of mind
To put it simply Nujabes is amazing. Ive only recently been introduced to him when I watched Samurai Champloo and its sad to hear he has passed away. May he rest in peace.
It'd be cool if this timeline was connected to the Cowboy Bebop timeline and Mugen was actually Spike's ancestor or something like that. Not an original thought, but still a neat one.
Nujabes is the one who made the beat and Shing02 is the one who sang the song. You can listen to the hexalogy of Luv(sic), this is basically lo-fi hip hop ahead of it's time. And it's beautiful.
I wish animes could actually enhance a story's experience like they did back in the day, and get back to a time where seeing 'serialization coming!' made me happy, not sad.

Mugen: "Sharp like an edge of a samurai sword
The mental blade cut through flesh and bone
Though my mind's at peace, the world out of order

Mugen's fighting style is unconventional, yet sharp like the blade he wields, and it is this unpredictabilty that allows him to easily cut through obstacles. This is likely due to his understanding that the world is out of order and life is difficult. Jin: "Oh yes, I have to find my path
No less, walk on earth, water, and fire
The elements compose a magnum opus
My modus operandi is amalgam"
Jin is a person who is motivated by a deep sense of purpose and a quest for meaning.
Fuu: "Steel packed tight in micro-chip
On my armor a sign of all-pro
The ultimate reward is honor, not awards
At odds with the times in wards with no lords"
Fuu is undoubtedly the smartest member of the trio, with a determined focus on finding the Samurai who smells of sunflowers.
Mugen enneagram 8
Jin enneagram 1
Bruh, the way they put their compilations together on beat with the song and the visuals...perfect
Awesome explanation. Someone else already mentioned what I’m about to say but the colors for each of their segments also match pretty good, for Mugen he has a range of warm red when he’s doing some attack or running but when he’s calm he’s a cool red and even some blue, it signifies how Mugens hot head temper is constantly fluctuating up and down
Jin remains cool blue throughout his intro as he always remains calm and collected no matter what, as if him drawing the sword is him practicing but the sudden change bright red when he draws towards the camera shows that wasn’t a practice swing and had intent to kill, but then returns to cool blue to show how in control he is of his emotions like a true samurai
Fuu is constantly shown in bright colors as she’s the happiest of the trio and has a bubbly personality and outlook on life, but there’s moments where her shades become more somber reflecting her emotional moments in the show and how even tho she’s always positive her quest is a deeply personal and emotional one. She’s also the most vulnerable and in her segment when she’s in “vulnerable” positions that’s when her colors are darker
Great breakdown! You deserve an award sir

Nujabes and Shing02 really did a number for this show.

This intro tells you everything you need to know about each character. Flawless imagery plus Battlecry is catchy af...10/10
Really is 🙏
A cool bit of attention to detail in this opening I think is how the colors the characters are tinted in in their various vignettes are somewhat reflective of their mood at that time.
That’s such a badass way of seeing it especially in Jin’s case
Also, the animals in jin and mugens backgrounds represent their character, for jin there's fish which represent his "go with the flow" style and attitude, while Mugen, there is a rooster which I imagine represents how he is flamboyant and aggressive and hard to predict
Gamer Theory level of analyzing.
I'm glad someone finally noticed too
awesome catch
I just realized when Jin shows up at 0:20 there's fish in the background, likely symbolizing his serenity and "go with the flow" attitude.
It is the same for Mugen, who has the roughness and unpredictability of the Rooster, and Fuu for obvious reasons has images of vegetables and flowers lol.

My kittens name is mugen my homie is naming the cat him and his gf just got, jin :)
What about Jin??
