  • Andy Brown explains why a smooth groove can be hard to do, and how solo guitar is about pruning away what you don’t need. Using Bossa Nova as an example, this video breaks it all down to the essentials.
Andy has made nine albums as a leader or co-leader and appears on at least nine others as a sideman. He plays regularly across Chicago, including weekly gigs of solo guitar at the Green Mill, and leading his quartet at Andy’s Jazz Club in the loop.

You're on the money. I'm a self-taught rock/Blues guitarist that took a few lessons to learn some Jazz sounding comping in a band situation. 40 years later I find that I need to play a lot of solo Jazz standards and Bossas. I hear what you're saying, loud and clear as that's the way I approached it. BTW, I saw Joe Pass in a small club playing solo, unbelievable. What a talent!

If you watch this with the sound off, it makes you realize that Andy could have been just a great a mime as he is a guitar player. Very clear, great teacher.
