Maldon Railway Station - A very busy branch line terminus and turntable - Australian Trains

- Welcome to Schony747 trains on Wednesday featuring Maldon Railway Station at The Victorian Goldfields Railway which is based in Victori, Australia. The original branchline between Castlemaine and Maldon opened in 1884. Passenger services finished during world war two and the line finally closed in 1976. The heritage branch line to Muckleford opened in 1986
On this visit, it was a busy day for the railway. J549 arrived with the passenger train then needed to be filled with water and oil. The steam engine was also spun on the turnable for the return trip to Castlemaine. Diesel Locomotive Y133 arrive during the afternoon from Castlemaine which meant so interesting shunting movements were on show at the terminus.
As I actually travelled by train, I didn't get the arrival and departure line side. The crazy Kiwi from New Zealand also visited with me on this visit and managed to get the turntable footplate videos and was responsible for access to other areas not normally open to the public.
This is a great video showcasing the golden age of The Victorian Railways. Have a great week - Brenden S.

Thanks for the memories. Dad;s Mum & Dad lived on the corner of Adair & Ireland Sts. In the late 40s I can remember my brothers and I used to race down to the station when we heard the approaching train whistle.
My parents used to say the same thing about me as a kid! Thanks for looking.
Gee, the passenger cars are beautiful inside! We have so much to be thankful for to those volunteers who keep the historic trains running for our benefit...
Yes indeed! They have a very good team up at VGR.
Well filmed, edited and produced. Thank you. ;-)
Thanks for having a look 😀😀
Great footage Brenden fantastic coverage, love the old carriages from the inside and reminds me of catching the the train from Geelong at Werribee to the city every week day to work in the late 70s and in winter with the foot warmers.
Great to see an "armstrong" turntable in action. In the 60's as part of a cab ride on the Monon RR I got to see a working turntable that used engine air to power it. I guess that's the next step up in technology, but I would have rather pushed on that arm at the end of the table's bridge! Thanks for sharing this footage, and Cheers from Wisconsin.
Thanks Andrew. There are a few of these tables still in operation. Wycheproof has just been restored to operational condition as well.
Good history information Brenden, I know Maldon well, I remember the little diesel rail motor that used to run from Castlemaine to Maldon when I was a small lad. My hat goes off to the volunteers who make it all possible. Station building looks the same, I remember I got a "thick ear" for playing on the scales when told not to by the SM. Thanks for the memories, cracking video.
It's a fantastic railway as the whole line is basically still intact. I always enjoy the visit to VGR
Very nice video mate i enjoyed it. I quite like how you showed the inside of some of the passenger cars i do love the old style wooden E and W class passenger stock.
Most views are lineside. I like to add a bit of difference
Very nice video, hi from Tasmania 👍✌🇦🇺🥰
Hi John. Thanks for looking
Thanks Brenden. Haven't seen this wonderful line since it started running to Castlemaine. Maldon station precinct is so perfect an example of a country terminus.
I spent a couple of weekend spexial events there many years back, including walking the line from Maldon to Muckleford with video camera and tripod. That got me some great lineside shots.
I am most impressed with the luxury carriages.
It's a fantastic railway with lots of great volunteers keeping the show running.
I went to maldon when I was younger
It's worth a revisit.
Great footage, Brenden!
Thanks 😀😀😀😀
I like the description of what is going on. Good job!!!!
Titles help! It's not normally this busy but it was enjoyable to visit.
One of my favourite railways. Just a little eccentric. The carriages are lovely. Wondering if today's peak service beats the historical peak of 4 trains per day?
One return trip a day but still a great place to visit.
Nice.
Thanks 😀😀
Great work Tim , almost like being there , ( and I wish I was ) !
It's been a while since I've visited and I'm so glad I came back 😀😀
Great scenery shots. I have always wanted to know how the drivers and firemen went ,going from steam to diesel locos( did they have to be retrained) no pun meant.
It's a great railway and well maintained. I'm sure there would have been transition training which is no different to me jumping from one tram to another.
The VGR is one of a minority of heritage railways that have a turntable at each end. I've only been on a few ones in the UK but that would be rare.
That's a very good observation
As much as it’s great to see the J class you also have to love the sound of that EMD engine in the Y.
The Y would be my preference
@@Schony747 Yes, I grew up listening to them in the middle of the night and I think that was the start of my love of trains!
Yep likewise. I grew up with diesels. I don't dislike steam, I just grew up with the diesels
Which D3 would that be at 6:21? Also awesome video.
D3 646
ok thanks.
I love the ornate brassware for the handbasins in Tambo.
When I was in that carriage in 2019, I must admit I didn't check out the toilets on board. ....I saw the doorsigns, but are they just decorative these days , or are they working ?
Out of service with a goal to put some back in service. Money and a lack of time from volunteers is hindering the process. I suppose three are bigger priorities on the railway other than fixing a toilet 😀😀
@@Schony747 lol.
That just means drinking less wine, and eating less cheese and crackers in the Tambo car ! 😂
What date in May did you film this, I was there on Sunday 23rd May for the return journey to Castlemaine, unfortunately the steam engine had broken down the previous day and was not in service, our journey was done with Y133 up front.
I've just updated the description. May 12th 2021
How is the oil tank at Malden refuelled?
Air operated pump
