Just received the Titan Pocket for no reason other than wanting to feel some nostalgia. Remember the days of the Palm Pre and the keyboard with these device.

I love my titan but yes what keeps me from using it as a daily is the aspect ratio. That said there is something about this phone that I haven't felt since I used BlackBerry phones where I just can't put it down. It rarely lives in my pocket and I always have it in my hand or the table next to me. I am ordering a titan pocket as well to see how that works out. Thanks for the wonderful video!

My first impressions of the keyboard and overall usability of the device were pretty positive, but of course in the overall conclusion I had a pretty negative view on those same things. That inconsistency is just the way of it; I changed my mind the more I used it. Totally wasn't trying to mislead on the initial opinions, particularly with the keyboard. I didn't have all that much to type during the setup stage. One thing I forgot to mention is that battery life is quite impressive. I was able to go 3 days between charges with moderate use. (All on WiFi, though.)

I'm sorry, I didn't fully understand it. After using it for a while, are your opinions more positive?

I'm glad the Titan has a headphone jack. I can't stand the lossy quality of Bluetooth codecs. It either ruins the sound of my FLACs or adds generational degradation to already lossy sources, like MP3 or Vorbis.

My favorite pre-smartphone PDA was a Sharp Zaurus with a slide-out keyboard. I would have been happy if all smartphones were like it, but that didn't happen. My older Google Pixel 3 XL was the first (and last) that had a screen big enough for me to want to use the onscreen keyboard. My Pixel 5 disappears into my pocket and stays there; I can wait for a real keyboard when over 50% of my key presses miss their mark.
When I got the HTC One M8 with its beautiful aluminum back, I ditched the case because aesthetics was a big part of having one. When it succumbed to battery bloat and Verizon couldn't replace it directly, I got a phone with an unbreakable screen and ballistic nylon back that didn't seem to need a case. When it succumbed to battery bloat too, I replaced the battery, and then used a case because the back didn't go back on right after that. It's a shame that the cutting edge of hardware and software is only available in purposely flimsy packaging.

That phone with the shatter proof screen sounds like a Moto Z (1/2/3?) Force. I think they were Verizon exclusives. I am pretty sure they aren't making them any more. All the cool weird phones are gone now, or they are like this Unihertz, low end imported models with poor usability.
I had an LG G5 and that was the last phone that I really loved. It was flawed but just so unique and it generally worked well. Never got updated past Android 8, and being bought through Verizon I couldn't put a custom ROM on it. The out of date software is actually why I replaced it in the end.

@@TobyCowles it's a Droid Turbo 2. I don't know if it was exclusive to Verizon, but when Gorilla Glass was still at version 2, the unbreakable screen was a novelty. It came before Motorola sold their phone division to China. I've been keeping mine going with the cheapest MVNO account I could find, stashed in a drawer in the bathroom in case of emergency.
IIRC the Turbo 2 had custom options including a choice of backs, some with engraving, but you had to order those from the factory. I just took what was in stock. While the back was stylish, it was nothing to write home about, not compared to the HTC One that I traded for it. Not as cool as my StarTAC phone was in its day. Today it's all about the software.

I've used this phone for 9 or 10 months now in both Canada and the US and the only thing i have not been able to do with the phone is to play video to a flat screen TV (UA-cam or Netflix) via a usb c to hdmi adapter or even with a powered usb c hub that has hdmi out. It seems that the Unihertz version of Android 10 does not include the setting to enable video out via hdmi (my blackberry key2 can do this).

DO NOT use the wireless charging feature, as, it is separate to the protected charging circuit. Yes, for a charge while you're awake and monitoring it is fine, but NEVER OVERNIGHT, as it'll keep charging the battery even when the battery is full so there is potential to overcharge the battery. Apart from that, it IS a very capable general use phone.
Also, they keys will be firm at first, but will break in and become softer and thus easier to use with time.. 😎🇬🇧

Was this filmed when Android 10 was still (relatively) current? Because now being 2 major revisions out of date that alone makes the device a hard sell

    • @ScottDotDot
      @ScottDotDot  2 роки тому +2

Nope, filmed within the last week or so. And agreed, but to be fair to them they announced the phone in July 2019 which was before 10 came out -- the Banggood listing said it came with 9 and had an OTA to 10, so I even expected it to come with 9. Was kinda hoping they'd have an update to at least 11 by now (the Titan Pocket ships with 11), but no such luck thus far.

Okay, so it's roughly the size of my Duo 2 when it's folded. Not too bad, then. That might tip me over to getting this over the Titan Pocket, especially if I can get Android 11 or Lineage OS running on it.
EDIT: I'd also be curious to see how well Gcam will work with this. It does wonders for my Surface Duo 2, especially with night shots.

Interesting, since it has LTE band 13 (as well as B2, B4, B5, and B66) it should technically work on Verizon (if you can get a representative to enable CDMA_Less if you didn't have it already enabled). I'm, curious to know if this phone works on AT&T now that they have a stupid whitelist.

The camera app is not the Google app, it looks custom to Unihertz, but the gallery app is Google photos. Lens is part of the gallery app. Any camera app can launch Google photos as the gallery from within the app.
