Wherever there is intellect is the capacity to know truth, and that entails grasping the act and potency in creatures. And potentiallity entails freedom. Freedom to choose different actualities through change. So sin is to choose the absence of good.
#AskAFriar Do the angels' infused knowledge mean, they know every particle, force and mechanics (where they are and what they are, how they work) of the universe at any given time (past and present)? I do know they can make a good prediction of where things would lead (I guess that would include where.a quantum particle would be at a given time?) God bless, Rev. 21:4
Angel's knowledge of temporal things is not exhaustive of all particulars, the angels do not know singular contingent future things in themselves, but only in their causes. Angels can make good predictions about how contingent things will unfold based on knowledge of secondary causes as showed in God. But their knowledge remains limited when considering the infinite particulars of creation unfolding in time. Angels do understand the natures and causal relations governing the physical world's mechanics and operations at a universal level, but they do not perceive the location and state of every quantum particle at every moment. They know physical realities not intrinsically, but through comprehension of divine ideas. If you are interested I suggest reading Marin Solà's book "Curso de Teología Dogmática" first volume as he has a great exposition regarding the angels' nature and knowledge, but I am not aware of an English translation if you are not bilingual.
Thanks for that book, recommendation. Is the author catholic and is it approved by the Church or it's neither approved nor condemned (no reason, just wanted to know)? I do have to mention coz' in the hierarchy of angels the Virtues are responsible for every mechanics (including mechanics we have have yet to discover) of the universe (mechanics including our current newtonian and Eintein physics and quantum mechanics), the regulate the motion (all in accordance to the higher angels that regulate them and ultimate leadiing to God), this is the reason I opined that angels at least from the Virtues and upwards know every particle in the universe, every force and energy (and other mechanics we have yet to discover) coz' they control them and make sure it's always operating in the pattern they're supposed and things are natural. I would theorize if God wants things to go supernatural as in many miracles, it goes through the hierarchy (not that it needs too, God can do everything, except sin) and the Virtues by God's command change the some patterns of the universe's mechanics which by that time would be a supernatural event (like the multiplication of the fish and loaves, which is I think essentially creating something out of nothing but in a small way. Another way I think (a theory) how the multiplication happened is: Virtues pluck a few fish from the ocean and perhaps out of nature, not from people's pantries elsewhere, used the raw materials needed for the loaves- in other words, somewhere in the world or even somewhere in the universe, molecules of the raw materials needed to assembled and allocated to the site where Jesus fed thousands). I have this idea (although it sound weird) from the Old Testament. There's a story there wherein an army who is with God was starving, they prayed and angel took bread that was in a kind of tabernacle and took bread there (the bread was like a pre-cursor of our Eucharist)- in short the priests of the Old Testament, if the look at their "tabernable" the bread would be missing coz' the angels took it to the army. @@SevenDeMagnus Marin Solà was a catholic thomistic theologian, he was also apart of the Dominican Order. His work is very well respected and is cited, he taught theology at renown catholic universities. The Church definitely approves of him. Yes I agree virtues govern the natural mechanics of the physical universe, but we should not attribute to them exhaustive knowledge of particular contingent realities. Even the highest angels' understanding of creation remains dependent on and subordinate to the divine ideas in which all things participate. When considering miracles, angels may act as secondary causes, but the primary cause is always God alone. My view is that since the multiplication of the loaves was an act of omnipotence, it would suggest it was created from nothing, not a rearrangement of preexisting elements. Virtues could have been involved instrumentally, but as with all miracles the supernatural exceeds any capacity of nature or angels. I think your Old Testament story refers to 1 Kings 19:1-8 where an angel touches Elijah with bread and water from heaven. So much for my intellect. I am not the least afraid to say that flew over my head at light speed. But then again I'm not Catholic and I'm not really sure if it would have helped if I was.
#AskAFriar Thank you Fr. Ambrose for the information you provided on St. Thomas’ view of angels. I have a question that has been bouncing around in my head for quite some time now. The basis for my question lies in the Catholic teaching, and St. Thomas’ description of, the separation of body and soul at death. When the body dies, the memories, imagination, and part of the intellect continue to exist until Jesus comes to wrap everything up and those who have merited the free gift of Heaven will receive their own bodies back…yet in a glorified form. However the question that has been hounding me is the particular situations of The Blessed Mother, Elijah, and Moses. They each “left this earth” in different and unusual manners and have made their reappearances in forms that give hints to the current state of their body (glorified or not); Mary in particular. Noted: -Elijah was taken up to heaven in the fiery chariot. -Moses was brought into the wilderness to have a “conversation “ with God during which he “met his end” and God Himself “buried” him in a place that would never be found🤔 - Seemingly, Both Moses and Elijah were “recognized” by the Peter/James/John during the transfiguration event as appearing in bodily form. - There have been several apparitions of The Blessed Mother during which she appears as a young woman, not as a 47 (or so) year old woman. Also, she did not always look the same with each apparition. In particular would be the one at Guadalupe. This is similar to when Jesus Christ appeared to the Apostles and disciples many times after His resurrection , in His Glorified body, and they did not recognize Him.
The angels were endowed with free will to choose good or evil, and upon exercising this freedom God in His justice confirmed the good angels in grace while the demons are fixed in malice. Now the good angels can no longer sin, but their love and service of God remains free, because divine confirmation does not negate angelic free will, as it just actualizes and perfects the ends they freely chose.
i suspect this is a mute subject, but I wonder if angels being in the spiritual realm and spirits themselves, do they also exist above all reality as with God? For example, correct me if I'm mistaken, God 'sees' the future, present, past all at the same time. Are angels able to do the same? Or are they limited by time and space? thank you Fr. Little for this very illuminating videos! God Bless you! #AskAFriar.
Interesting question, I too have wondered about this. From the scripture alone I am left with the impression that angels are sort of left on a "need to know basis" as far as what God will or will not reveal to them of the Divine knowledge.
@@t0xcn253 true. Fr. Little also mentioned that. #AskAFriar Still confused what is a mortal sin and what is just an imperfection which gets in the way when confessing and during examination of conscience. What are examples of imperfections vs. mortal sin. For example is someone who's always rude and angry (like Peter Parker/Spider-Man''s boss, Johnah Jameson) sinning coz' he treats his employees without love (no patience, kindness in words) or is it not a sin and just an imperfection? God bless, Rev. 21:4
Video Question: How can angels possess free will and perfect will? If they have free will, surely even fallen angels, demons could repent and ask for mercy. Then again since they have perfect will they would see no reason or point in repentance. Stranger still, it seems that angels are either faithful to God, or reject Him and become demons. It is a very clear and binary position. In contrast, humans almost never fall into suck black and white categories so neatly. We hear of the consequences of original sin all the time, but what is the true nature of original sin? What did it do to our souls that makes us so messy?
Angels cannot repent as their wills are “locked in”. Also, Christ died for men not angels, so no satisfaction, expiation, or mediation exists for them - this is expressly stated in Hebrews 2:16-17.
@@edrash1 But having free will would mean a possibility of one changing their mind. Having perfect will means that your choice gets "locked in." Do you see the contradiction here? That's why I ask how can they both be true at once, and why I think this would make for a good follow-up video. Christ dying for us men, does not preclude the possibility that even angels have recourse and a path of satisfaction, expiation, or mediation. Scripture is our story, about us, our relationship to God, and our salvation through Christ.
@@CaptainBill22Angels are not like humans so you need to consider their beings in a different manner. Since they have no bodies they are pure intellect. They have no bodies and thus no passions that can sway or pull them one way or another. At the instant of their creation they exercised their gift of free will to choose to love God or love themselves. They cannot choose a second time because they are not made in such a way that they can “reconsider” their previous choice. They chose their direction and that is now what they can be considered: an angel or a demon.
