An old Girl Friend of mine whose Grandmother was from Tupper Lake said if the flies are biting so are the fish. You would think that stream would be loaded with hungry brook trout. I know a lot of the trout ponds are stocked even the back country ones, they do it with helicopter, look up DEC Helicopter stocking on youtube. That stream may not have come back from the acid rain from the 70's and 80's or they are just in tune with naturally occurring food source or you didn't get deep enough because of the current.
I am glad those flies aren't biting yet! but would really love those fish to... I thought it would be a great creek to fish too but saw no signs of life.. but like you said, maybe any of that. I am going to definitely try again next time I am there, it'd be nice to see fish in it!
