The dry humor in Mike's point that "usually that advice [that Pigpen gave during the Dead's jam] boiled down to, you know, 'quit playing "pocketball" and get with the ladies'" slays me.
best thing about the footage you chose is that there's a point where the camera is focused on the piano player (keith godcheaux?, i think), and he just has this look of faraway horror on his face, like he just realized what he was complicit in.
Hey, just leaving a comment here to let any Best Show / Scharpling fans know that I'm also doing uploads of Best Show stuff on my channel - mostly wurster calls and full WFMU episodes. Thanks!
Ron "Pigpen" McKernan was one of the founding members of the band, not some goober who showed up in late 1967 and hung around until he croaked in 1973.
Funny how this music is still being played live by both the surviving members, thousands of cover bands, both national and local, as well as new jam bands everywhere. This music is still inspiring young people while all the classic rock crap of the 70's that this idiot thinks is better is becoming less and less relevant to younger generations.
Beautiful work. I admit, I was a little disappointed seeing the actual Pigpen in this. I always assumed he was some grimier version of Avalanche Bob, not a oily Nugent type. Yuck. Thanks!
Creating these synced videos is a service to humanity. I am in tears laughing - thank you R. Reynolds! Please never stop.
i just inadvertently listened to the grateful dead. touché Tom.
The Best Show should have a bi-annual Tom and AP Mike episode, where they just sit and take calls for the full 3 hours.

minor correction: pocket pool. lol.
to be fair to Pigpen, he said “I’ve been out on a four day creep: drinkin’ and gamblin’; carryin’ on all next week.”

I have listened to this four times. Comedy gold.
The best part of this is listening to Mike laugh uncontrollably.
Thank you for your service.
"alright, you wrote here 'four day creep'. what is that?" insert AP Mike laughing his ass off.
This never gets old!!!!
I just realized that this fully reminds me of the breakdown rap on Black Flag "Who's Got the 10 1/2?"
Grateful Dead were a big influence on that period of Flag, particularly Greg Ginn
It's been years since I first listened, and I still get "four day creep... this guy's a 24/7 creep!" stuck in my head periodically
Aw man listen to them spread out 🤣🤣🤣
I'm finally hearing this one, thanks!
It's like The Analyze Phish podcast! 😃 RIP Harris Wittels.

Oh, man, I've already watched this three times and it still cracks me up. So on the last rap, was Pigpen rapping about Little Red Riding Hood? Hahaha
Walking the dog!
AP Mike certainly knows how to pick 'em!
"drunk pervert"
Wait... where's Mayer?;)
Get your hands out yo pockets
They were evolved musically by '72 with the Bakersfield/country stuff they were covering.
Whose dog??? This guy's a pet owner?? 🤣

@@phatstax2011 you sound like a Wurster character
That’s unfortunate because it is really horrible
Is this the first riff?
thank you tom cat
You are the best, Tom S
Haha so funny
It’s called riffing not rapping. You know he’s singing a blues melody

Hahahahaha....
Your opinion is ahhhhhh.....
Mmmm.... cough cough
A tomcat proud and long
Did Pigpen sample Janis Joplin's cookies and if so were they vanilla or chocolate chip?
They really are terrible
Mike is right, though - even deadheads don't like Pigpen era. At least hate them for the right reasons ;)
@@RayleneSteves 72-74 with keith is their best work.
It sounds like they’re all playing different songs lol
@@scottgreenberg1596 7/16/72-10/19/74 to be more specific (post-Pigpen, one drummer era).
💯 % just horrible.
