This game was blacked out locally if I remember correctly. The NFL rules on blackouts were frustrating for this young kid. I was a rabid Colts fan despite their poor play and ended up listening to the game on the radio. **Listening to Chuck Thompson calling Colts' games was a privilege I will never forget as a 12 year old.** #TheVoiceOfTheGods
I WAS AT THIS GAME!!!! It was my very first game with my dad and my uncles. I was 3 yrs old. I remember alot of screaming alot of dirt flying and cleats and shoulder pads cracking. I'll never forget how they were booing Elway. Oddly enough he became the first football player i ever liked. Good times!!
So many stadiums were multi-purpose back then. I loved watching those early season games with dirt infields. Jack Murphy stadium, Oakland Alameda Coliseum, LA Rams when they played in Anaheim, Candlestick Park, Cleveland Stadium, just to name a few. Mile High Stadium, and Denver only had a minor league baseball team at the time.
@@survivor5044 Hey, Man. First of all, congrats on your material as always, as it brings back quite the memories and it's been really helpful in filling some historical voids. And on that note, you think that it'd be possible to use some clips of it for educational and researching purposes? It'd be greatly appreciated. Thanks.
I was at this game. I'd just turned 22 and would be the last time I saw the Baltimore Colts live. Bought a single seat ticket and was on the 20 yard line in the closed end. Last rowdy crowd at Memorial Stadium for football. About 6 weeks later the Orioles won the World Series.
I was 22 when I was at this game. It was hot but we did not care. I will hate that prick Elway and his prick father forever because of the way they made fun of us during the draft process. The classy Steve DeBerg rescued Elway this game and all year, they were a playoff team because of him
Wow! I became a Broncos fan when I was 9 years old in 1987. John Elway is my all-time favorite player. I’ve been looking for this game for years! I knew it was a brutal day for John but I’ve never seen the actual game or even real highlights until now. I’ve only snippets of the game from NFL films. Great upload!!
I admire his career but still loathe him for snubbing the Colts. Only 12 at the time I could not fully comprehend why but years later I finally have a grasp, but still find it contemptible. Elway could have saved the franchise by his mere existence, but unfortunately it did not happen that way. Even now, 37 years later, I still hate driving through Indy. I support the Ravens (Yeah, but at least Cleveland KEPT their history and colors) but when I see these videos I still feel the emotion of highs and lows with every BALTIMORE COLTS play.....
Tale of two teams in a city, the Baltimore Colts in their final season, playing on the baseball diamond, also the home of the Orioles who would win the World Series in 5 weeks at the time the class of the league.
Can you get the broadcast of the Colts/Raiders 1970 AFC Championship game in Baltimore. I would love to see the broadcast of that game! The 1st AFC Championship game!
So John Elway had to experienced lots of heavy booing. I didn’t know until 2004 that he was drafted by the Baltimore Colts but refused to played for them. No wonder lots of my relatives didn’t like the Denver Broncos.
Had Baltimore not began eminent domain proceedings against the Colts, the team would not have moved in '84. It was almost April when they left because of that legislation. I don't know if the Colts would have moved period, actually. Irsay was shopping the team from, at least, 1976. That's why the Colts had an issue with selling out. I lived through Irsay's reign. The people of this area were nuts about the Colts, but the refrain was, " I ain't giving that bum my money!" And back then, Baltimore was a tough, blue collar town, and his kind of disrespect to the community wasn't taken lightly. Remember, the Colts sold out from like 1957 through 1971. So, the support was hot and cold. Even so, through all the losing with Irsay - 1972, 1973, 1974, 1978, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983 - the Colts avgd 49, 000 ( yes, I looked the attendance up, lol ) and they had a couple seasons of being about the worst teams in NFL history. 50, 000 avg for sucky and continually losing teams isn't bad, at all! The thing is... Elway could have revived one of the classic franchises and made an even bigger mark in Baltimore than he did in Denver!
Oh, I forgot. Irsay traded Elway... not Ernie Accorsi the GM!! This caused Accorsi to resign! Accorsi has maintained that Elway would have played in Baltimore, if it did as he wanted. That is, hold onto Elway until he decided he was going to play in the NFL. Elway wasn't much of a baseball player, so that threat was just a bunch of bs. He would have been forced to come to Baltimore if he wanted to play in the NFL, and he did, had Irsay not traded him.
Clearly, the Colts were better off with Mike Pagel. Pagel helped lead to a 15-31-1 record in 4 seasons with the Colts. Elway only led Denver to the playoffs 10x, a division title 7x, 6 AFC Championship Games, 5 AFC titles, and 2 Super Bowl championships.
Once again my friend, you've come through..and the funny thing about it, the Colts would travel to Denver later on in the season and Elway would lead the 1st comeback in his HOF career! Thank you Richard
The 83' Broncos owe a debt of gratitude to Steve Deberg without his steadying influence and solid play in relief of an inaccurate/erratic and inexperienced John Elway, the Broncos miss the playoffs.
After the first 2 games of the 83 season, I was starting to think that the Broncos should do something similar to what the Dolphins were doing with their "WoodStrock" (David Woodley and Don Strock) QB situation. I figured they could call it "DeWay" or "ElBerg."
Richard, could you please upload the 1986 Championship Playoff game between the New York Giants vs. Washington Redskins? I've been wanting to rewatch that game for years now but I can never find it.
Every time I try to post the game to UA-cam, the NFL blocks it. This is the link to the game from Google Photos. 1986 NFC Championship Game photos.app.goo.gl/xMXi7WxGjbWRuoBz5
Playing for Irsay was like playing for Gene Klein or Paul Brown. Cheapskate who left Jonny Unitas loyal fans and sneaked out in a 16 wheeler. Dispicable as Al Davis. No wonder Elway refused to play for him.
I remember watching Pagel and being enormously disappointed in him. Listening to the announcers you would have thought Mike was the second coming of Roger Staubach, but was instead more of a bust from the word go......
It was a quirk in the NFL schedule where the last place teams from the previous year played with the "Last Place Schedule" which I think was last used in 1989 cause the Cowboys played against the Packers twice that year. In 1983, both the Broncos and the Colts finished last in their divisions in 1982 (Standings went by conference instead of division standings cause of the strike shortened season in 1982 where 9 games of the usual 16 were played)
@@cfoster81 I remember the Colts going 0-8-1 in 1981-1982, and 2-14 in 1982-1983. The only tie that had in 1981-1982 was versus Green Bay, and they had "bookend" victories the following year against the equally hapless Patriots.
But the old lady of west 33rd street was coined as "The World's largest outdoor insane asylum" and I'm still trying to figure out why the Colts' home games in Baltimore if it was in the early window of games, mostly started at 2pm eastern time while everybody else on the east coast started at 1pm.
City or county blue laws of the time prohibited any sporting event from starting before 2pm on a Sunday. I believe the law was finally repealed just in time for the Colts to move.
@@pronkb000 Looking back on it, it was Baltimore City had the blue law in place and the mayor of Baltimore at the time was the late William Donald Schaefer, who eventually became the Governor of Maryland later on in the 80s. Also, I think the Saints had to kickoff at 2pm eastern time (1pm local time) due to blue laws that were in place in New Orleans.
Were Robert Irsay and Frank Kush good people? Not at all. Was John Elway also full of shit? Absolutely. He said he didn't want to play football in the cold, but he was fine with going to Denver. Maybe he was just trying not to say that he hated Kush and Irsay personally, but he obviously did.

Of all the old school multi purpose stadiums Baltimore Memorial Stadium probably had the most visible baseball infield dirt of all them.
Kept visible because the O's were in the hunt for the World Series that year
