Listen to Otto Klemperer or Karl Richter. Than maybe you got a taste of Bach! This baroque performances are horrible. Even if you made kind of so called 'culture' out of it. Horrible like Hanoncourt and I'm conscious and aware of what I'm talking about!

The point being made is that even if musicians of the last 200 years underestimated and misunderstood pre-classical music, there is now a danger of a "two cultures" situation developing, where it is thought on one side that it is almost sufficient to play on authentic instruments (or exact copies) and play according to practices laid down in old treatieses in order to achieve a "true performance" of a work, and on the other side that performers of "early music" are wilfully ignoring the insights of great musicians of the last two centuries (insights that, for example, Bach's contemporaries lacked, else he wouldn't have fallen into neglect) and insisting that an historically-informed performance is the only valid one. Karl Richter may have played on (Heaven forbid!) a Neupert instrument or worse, but his performance may still have things to offer us that an "authentic" one cannot.
So interesting to hear these musicians talk about their experiences. Thanks for posting.
