  • See why a $30 deadbolt lock is so much less than a $200 deadbolt lock. The great majority of Americans use very inexpensive deadbolts to protect their homes. You'll learn why cheap deadbolt locks aren't the right choice when it comes to protecting thousands of dollars worth of valuables inside your home. A kwikset keyway lock and Medeco M3 residential are both fully disassembled in this video. Enjoy the video!

It's been my experience that thieves are generally stupid. My car was broken into by a thief. They took nothing because I had nothing in it. But the window was smashed. At work the next day a fellow employee who had a juvenile record (but was now going straight) laughed at the stupidity of the thief. He whipped out his pocket knife and had my window open in about two seconds. No damage. When my house was burgled they just smashed through the door instead of trying the knob. It was unlocked. I had to buy a new door.

@@kthwkr yup, a better lock is better of course.
Have to consider the system as a whole though, not much reason to put a vault door next to a single pane bay window.

One thing to consider is that you're protected as much as the weakest link. Such a lock would be overkill on most homes, as there are other potential entry points that would be quicker and easier than trying to pick the front door lock, such an open window, patio door(which can often be unlocked by just lifting the door), visible door hinges, etc. For the most part, a lock is just a deterrent, but a thief who know what he's doing will find a way to get in if he really wants to.

this is true, my situation is opposite to most though. I moved into a house in the city that already has bars over the windows, on the inside, a solid wood front door and a security door to cover the back door but they used deadbolts that can be raked open. covering the main points of entry but as you say if someone really wants to get in they will always be able to go through your walls or floor if they bring the tools.

Interesting fact: both locks shown are actually brands of the same parent company. People will spend $30/month (or more) for an alarm system to tell them when their stuff got stolen, but balk at the idea of paying more than $45 per lock to try and secure it from being stolen in the first place. SMH.

Schlages a good medium. But reinforcing your door is key. And just as expensive. A criminal got ahold of my keys living with my grandma, and as an ignorant teenager I immediately reneged everything to Schlage, most I could afford. Well, they just kicked the door in broad day.
Opsec is important. Know your potential enemy, their capabilities and prepare accordingly.
I looked into lock smithing and was terrrifed to “wake up”
As a victim of stocking. Luckily now a days... jokes on them and nothings gonna shake me. The predator is missing the part of their brain to contemplate consequences. It was a journey but for a couple years it was pretty scary. Sorry to go off topic but with the dark web, stay out of the spot lite with friends, famous, colleges. Sometimes they just hire a criminal for them...

When I lived in America, I worked for a large city on the east coast that had Medeco locks in every facility they had. I was not an actual locksmith but being in maintenance we sometimes would remove cylinders from doors and have them re keyed for allowing or removing sub master keys to access that lock or set of locks for cleaning crew convenience. I had 4 master keys that were for almost every Parks facility and office building in that city, that accessed probably more than 3000 doors. Whenever I took a cylinder in for re keying I had to have a letter from my manager permitting the locksmith vendor to cut and turn over to me keys for these cylinders The letter was good only for that one day and only for the specified services and number of keys. No letter meant no turnover of keys by the vendor. The policy was every time enforced as it should be by Medeco authorized locksmiths. If a master key was ever lost every lock on that master key would have to be re keyed and the unlucky employee would likely have been terminated. Thankfully when I was there it never happened. Those locks are built like a tank. Excellent informative video, thanks for showing us the inner workings.

One day we came home and saw the jamb separated along the finger joint, inside, that these cheap jamb are made of. Suffice it to say, no one got in and all I did was hammer it back in place. Sometimes you need more than wood to keep the door shut.

Problem with medeco is if you know what the main code to the lock is you can just make a key without the v cuts and it will usually open because the side bar is already aligned from original key. As long as the pins don't turn the lock will open! All you have to do with the qwickset is take all the top pins out and replace them with spool pins! M 3s are harder but a paper clip will engage the side bar if you have a weird key!

The thing with deadbolts on your front door is, if there is glass on the door, and the deadbolt has a knob on the inside, well, just break the glass and reach in to open it, no matter how expensive it is. You can have double lock cylinders on it, but thats risky and against some bylaws. Better to have a solid door with no glass for these to make a real difference.

I currently have jimmy proof on my door at my new apartment. i asked locksmith to install something like medeco. he said it is a hassle to do that on my door, and it is easier to install new jimmy lock. but the cost of the lock, jimmy, he said is $100, i thought those locks are old style and cheap. So do these jimy locks come as good as medeco?

well even if you buy a 10 000 door lock, you still have windows a kid could break... I'm removing my medeco today cause we only have a key and don't have time to do through the hassle of finding how to make a double. Not very practical when you have difficulty to access your own home. Any tip on how to remove that lock???

Is it possible to put a Medeco deadbolt into a smartlock? When I'm not home, I want to be able to unlock my door remotely for emergency repair entries without giving my door key to anyone. However, when I'm home, I want to have the security of the deadbolt for no entry at all. I realize that will reduce my security when I'm not home. However, it's better than having zero security 24/7 by giving my key to a stranger.

Very well done video/explanation of medeco m3!
Have you ever managed to pick one yourself?
At the company I work for, we prefer to sell abloy, tbh. Some of the reasons are because medeco keys can often break, or the heavily used ones are easy to pick. I was on a site one time where I had to pick a medeco m3 that was very used... at first I thought it would be a challenge, but I was able to open it within 20 seconds! Not that people would try to pick it really, and also, i have a lot of experience picking high security locks... but still, i was thoroughly surprised how fast I got it open haha.
Now they have the m4, which I haven't gotten to play around with yet, but from what I can see it's decent step up in picking difficulty.
I can't pick abloys though... yet! Haha
Cheers, thanks for the fun and informative video 😀👍

Any products I show, I either purchased or requested to have sent to me. I decided to make this video on my own. Since I took the time to produce such a quality video, why not post a link to the type of deadbolt that I own? If my video influenced a person to buy a Medeco, then I certainly deserve to be compensated for it. Why should Medeco get free advertising? Would you spend 12 hours making a video for $10 in ad revenue? I don't think so. I modified the video description area to make it clear. Thank you

Crime is on a time constraint. Can the lock be picked??? Sure. The are very smart people out there. But could it be picked quick enough to make a crime feasible. I don’t think so. Locks only keep honest people honest. Hell a carbide drill will make short work of that lock. I don’t care how hard it is. Or a grinder. But the effort needed is the deterrent. A person with that arsenal will not be breaking into your home. They have their eyes on larger real-estate. Lol. Plus if the lock is too tough, just kick the door in. Just saying.

    • @BrandonBaumvideo

That one is $7. I think there's your answer as to how "good" they are. The quality looks absolutely horrible as it looks like it was cast instead of milled and it says its made out of aluminum which no lock should be made out of. It also doesn't matter how many pins there are if the tolerances are horrible cause you will still be able to rake it in a matter of seconds. Chances are the pins in that lock are double-sided and the holes for the pins are beveled making it even easier to pick than just bad tolerances.
