Some properties allow you to request to upgrade in advance but most properties are at the day depending on your elite status. But I think it doesn't hurt to check in advance but emailing them. For Carmel valley ranch, I emailed one week in advance.
Hi! I'm assuming you have status with Hyatt given the upgrades you get. Just curious, in your experience are you able to get an upgrade almost everytime you stay with a Hyatt hotel? And can you book the cheapest room & rate and get upgraded or do you have to book a mid-level type of room?
No, not everytime. In fact they don't have obligation to give it to you beforehand but I think it's worth trying by emailing them. A couple of tips for a potential upgrade opportunity: not a busy weekend/weekday, ask in advance, check in early before normal check-in time, give a compelling reason for upgrade (eg. Anniversary), check again on the second day if no luck on first day, higher status (globalist would generally have a higher upgrade probability than explorist)
